Long-suffering Frank Lloyd Wright home hits the market for $350,000

Frank Lloyd Wright's Forgotten Gem Hits Market for $350,000 Amid Restoration Concerns

A 123-year-old Austin home designed by the legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright has finally hit the market, with a asking price of $350,000. The Walser House, built in 1903 for printing executive Joseph Jacob Walser, is an official Chicago landmark and a member of the National Register of Historic Places.

Despite its significance, the home has spent two decades in disrepair after being foreclosed upon by Fannie Mae. Barbara Gordon, executive director of the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy, welcomed the sale as "good news now that the building is out of the mess of the foreclosure process." However, she also cautioned that restoring the home to its original state would be an expensive endeavor, with costs estimated at over $2 million.

The house's condition has been described as "vacant and uninhabitable," sparking concerns about its future. The National Register of Historic Places designation preserves the design intent, materials, and special character of the interior, but it also highlights the need for a responsible owner who can restore the property without compromising its integrity.

Preservation groups such as Landmarks Illinois and Preservation Chicago have been working to save the home since 2020, with some organizations even offering to purchase the property themselves. However, Austin Coming Together Executive Director Darnell Shields expressed frustration that the house was listed for sale at a price "more inflated than what the property is currently worth right now, which is just egregious."

Shields's group had raised $40 million to convert a closed Chicago Public School into the new Aspire Center for Workforce Innovation. Despite their efforts, they were unable to purchase the Walser House directly from Fannie Mae. Instead, they are now planning to pursue purchasing the property once it hits the market.

As the Walser House seeks a new owner, its future hangs in the balance. Will responsible preservation efforts prevail, or will this beloved Frank Lloyd Wright gem fall victim to neglect and disrepair? Only time will tell.

Ugh, I'm telling you, something fishy is going on with that $350k price tag ๐Ÿค‘๐Ÿค”. First of all, a 2-mil restoration bill is like a death sentence for the house - it's gonna get locked up in some fancy conservancy forever and never see the light of day ๐Ÿ’ก. And what's up with Fannie Mae foreclosing on it in the first place? Did they just wanna make a quick buck off a piece of history? ๐Ÿค‘ I mean, we're talking Frank Lloyd Wright here - one of the most iconic architects of all time! You'd think his fans would have some influence to stop this sale and get the house back into good hands... but nope, it's like they just wanted to move it around in a big circle ๐Ÿ’ญ. And don't even get me started on Landmarks Illinois and Preservation Chicago - I'm sure those orgs are just pawns in a bigger game ๐ŸŽฒ. This whole thing reeks of a setup to me...

I'm so worried about that iconic house ๐Ÿค•. I mean, it's like, Frank Lloyd Wright designed it, it's a Chicago landmark... you'd think the city would do something to save it ๐Ÿ’ธ. But nope, Fannie Mae just sells it for a price that's way too high considering its current state ๐Ÿšฎ. I get that preservation groups are trying to help, but $2 million to restore it? That's crazy expensive! ๐Ÿ’ธ And now it's being listed at this super inflated price... it's just not fair to the community or to Wright's legacy ๐Ÿ˜”.

I wish more organizations like Landmarks Illinois and Preservation Chicago were able to step in and purchase it themselves ๐Ÿ™. They're already doing amazing work, but $40 million was a lot of money even for them ๐Ÿ’ธ. I'm rooting for Austin Coming Together's efforts to try and buy it now that it hits the market ๐Ÿคž. We need people who care about this piece of history and can restore it properly ๐Ÿ‘.

this is crazy the house has been vacant for like 2 decades it's not fair that the price tag is $350k more than what it's actually worth they're gonna pay like $2 million just to fix up some stuff i feel bad for preservation groups like Landmarks Illinois and Preservation Chicago who have been trying to save this place, but at the same time, you can't blame them for wanting a fair deal ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Ugh, can you believe this? They're selling this iconic Frank Lloyd Wright home for like $350k and nobody's even bothered to clean it out ๐Ÿ˜’. The fact that it's been vacant and uninhabitable for years is just a testament to the owners' lack of care. And now they're expecting some random buyer to magically restore it without any budget or plan? It's gonna be a total mess ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ. I mean, $2 million to restore it? Please, that's like asking someone to build an entire new house out of thin air ๐Ÿ’ธ. Preservation groups are all over this and rightfully so, but come on, Fannie Mae should've taken care of this place in the first place ๐Ÿ™„. It's gonna be a shame if this beautiful home ends up as some overpriced fixer-upper ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ’”

I'm so stoked that the Walser House is finally hitting the market ๐Ÿคฉ! I mean, can you believe a piece of history like this has been sitting vacant for two decades? It's crazy to think about all the amazing memories it must hold. And $350k might seem steep, but think about all the love and care that'll go into restoring it - it's worth every penny ๐Ÿ’ธ. Plus, Preservation Chicago and Landmarks Illinois are on top of it, working tirelessly to make sure this gem is preserved for future generations. Let's hope the right owner comes along with a passion for restoration and a commitment to keeping it authentic ๐Ÿ™. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll see some amazing things happen to this incredible piece of architecture! ๐Ÿ’ซ

OMG u guys I'm literally so frustrated rn like I cant even believe ppl r talking about restoring that house 2 its former glory 4 $2 million+ thats insane! I mean I get it, its a FLW gem & all but come on Darnell Shields is RIGHT the price is way too high & im worried bout what happens next. Preservation groups like Landmarks Illinois & Preservation Chicago r doin their thang but its not enough...we need 4 more ppl who care about saving that piece of history, not just lining their pockets

I feel so bad for that house ๐Ÿค• it's like someone left it alone to rot while trying to make a profit from it... it's a shame because I've seen pics of the Walser House when it was still in great shape, and it's just heartbreaking to see it like that now ๐Ÿ’”. Can you imagine having to restore a piece of history like that? It's gotta be exhausting and costly ๐Ÿคฏ. I'm glad preservation groups are trying to save it though - they're really good at their job! But it's so frustrating when people try to make money off something that's not even worth the price it's being sold for... ๐Ÿ’ธ.

Ugh, can't believe that Fannie Mae is just gonna sell it like a hot mess ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ... Like, they foreclosed on the guy who designed one of the most iconic homes in history because he couldn't pay his mortgage? What's next, auctioning off the Mona Lisa? ๐ŸŽจ

And poor Darnell Shields, working tirelessly to preserve this masterpiece only to find out it's gonna be sold for way more than it's worth... Like, what's the point of even trying? The real problem is that Fannie Mae doesn't care about its historical significance; they just want to make a quick buck ๐Ÿ’ธ

Restoration costs are already at $2 million and it's gonna go on sale for $350k? ๐Ÿคฏ That's like putting a price tag on a national treasure... It's not the owner's responsibility, preservation groups should be buying this thing up ASAP! ๐Ÿšจ

OMG u guys!! ๐Ÿคฏ I cant even believe tht Frank Lloyd Wright's Walser House is finally on the market!!! ๐Ÿ’ธ Like, $350k is a pretty penny, but its def worth it 4 its history & design 1st lol! ๐Ÿ˜‚ But seriously tho, its sad 2 hear its been in disrepair 4 so long. I mean, who wants 2 spend $2 mil restoring a house? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ But on the flip side, its awesome 2 see preservation groups like Landmarks Illinois & Preservation Chicago stepping up 2 save it! ๐Ÿ’ช They should def get that house b4 its too late ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ. Fingers crossed responsible ownership happens & this beauty gets restored 2 its former glory ๐Ÿ’ซ

๐Ÿคฃ Can you believe this? $350k for a house that's basically been living like a homeless shelter for 20 years? ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ˜‚ I mean, I get it, preservation groups are all about saving the architecture and history, but come on, can't they just raise some more cash? ๐Ÿ’ธ Like, Landmarks Illinois raised $40 million for a completely different project... what's a little extra needed to save this beauty? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ Fannie Mae needs to get its act together, not the buyer! ๐Ÿ˜œ And honestly, I kinda feel bad for the person who ends up buying it. They're gonna be stuck with a massive renovation bill and the pressure of preserving a piece of history. ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ’Ž Guess only time will tell if this Frank Lloyd Wright gem gets the TLC it needs... ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ

I'm so down for this sale lol ๐Ÿคฃ... I mean, who wouldn't want to own a piece of history like that?! But at the same time, $350k is kinda steep, you know? Like, I get why preservation groups are worried about the price being inflated and stuff. It's a shame that Fannie Mae held onto it for so long, it's a total waste ๐Ÿ˜”... wait, no, that's not true! The bank's gotta make some cash somehow, right? ๐Ÿค‘ But seriously though, restoring the house to its original state is gonna be super expensive, like over $2 mil ๐Ÿ˜ณ. Maybe someone should just buy it and start fresh or something? ๐Ÿ’ธ

I'm all for the house being sold at $350k lol ๐Ÿคฏ, but then again, I also think that's way too much money considering it's been in disrepair for 20 yrs ๐Ÿ™„. I mean, if someone is gonna restore it to its original state, it should be done right, not just slap a fancy price tag on it ๐Ÿ’ธ. Preservation groups have been working so hard to save this place, but now they're stuck with nothing ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ. If Austin Coming Together had the cash, they'd already own the place ๐Ÿค‘... wait, no they would ๐Ÿ‘€ - if they didn't overpay for it in the first place ๐Ÿ˜‚. Still, I do hope whoever buys it has a vision to preserve it properly ๐Ÿ’ช.

man... $350k is like, what even is that?! ๐Ÿคฏ u gotta think about how much work would go into gettin' this place back in shape tho... 2 million+ sounds crazy... i mean i get why ppl want to buy historic homes and all but it's just a shame if some greedy investor comes in and screws up the design. preservation groups r doin what they can, hope they get lucky ๐Ÿคž

omg i'm so confused about this ๐Ÿคฏ... like, $350k is way too much for a house that's basically uninhabitable ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ... don't get me wrong, it's frank lloyd wright's design and all but come on, 2 mil to restore it? ๐Ÿ’ธ that's just crazy talk ๐Ÿค‘... i'm rooting for preservation groups like landmarks illinois and preservation chicago tho ๐Ÿ‘ they deserve a chance to make this beautiful house shine again ๐Ÿ’ซ... lets hope the new owner is responsible and doesn't mess it up ๐Ÿคž

I'm not surprised the house is selling for $350k lol like who wouldn't wanna buy a piece of history right? But seriously, it's crazy that it took two decades to get it out from under Fannie Mae's feet. I mean, $2 million restoration costs are no joke tho. I wonder if any preservation groups will swoop in and save the day (or at least the architecture ๐Ÿ ). Maybe they can learn something from Landmarks Illinois and Preservation Chicago who've been working on it since 2020... or maybe not, because, you know, money talks ๐Ÿ’ธ

๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ’ธ This is so crazy that the Walser House, one of Frank Lloyd Wright's most iconic designs, is being sold for like $350k! ๐Ÿคฏ I mean, I get why it's a great investment opportunity for someone who wants to restore it back to its former glory ๐Ÿ’ช. But at the same time, I'm worried about the future of this historic home ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ. The restoration costs are estimated to be over $2 million, which is a huge ask even for preservation groups like Landmarks Illinois and Preservation Chicago ๐Ÿ’ธ. They've been working tirelessly since 2020 to save the house, but it's not going to be easy โš–๏ธ. I just hope that whoever buys this house takes the necessary steps to preserve its integrity and history ๐Ÿ›๏ธ #FrankLloydWright #PreservationMatters #HistoricHomes #Architecture #RealEstate #Chicago

Man, can you believe this? A Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece is hitting the market for $350k?! ๐Ÿคฏ I mean, that's a steal considering its 123-year history! The Walser House was meant to be preserved, not some overpriced money pit. ๐Ÿค‘ Restoration costs are like, whoa ($2 million+), but come on! This is an iconic piece of architecture we're talking about here.

It's disheartening that Fannie Mae foreclosed upon it and left it in shambles for two decades. ๐Ÿ˜” I mean, what happened to all that preservation love from Landmarks Illinois and Preservation Chicago? It feels like they're just watching this beauty fade away. ๐Ÿค•

The price is definitely inflated, though. $350k doesn't even come close to the property's worth. ๐Ÿ˜’ I'd have loved to see some serious buyers come in with a solid offer, but instead we got this astronomical price tag. ๐Ÿ’ธ It's like they're playing a game of Frank Lloyd Wright roulette, hoping someone will take a chance on it.

Darnell Shields is totally right; this house should be bought and restored by preservation groups or something! ๐Ÿค Not some random buyer who'll just let it sit there. What happened to the $40 million Aspire Center fund? That money could've gone towards restoring Wright's masterpiece instead of trying to buy a closed school building. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

I feel bad for that old house ๐Ÿค•. It's crazy that it's been sitting vacant for so long. I mean, $2 million is a lot to restore it back to its original state ๐Ÿ’ธ. And the fact that it was listed for sale at like $350k and now they're saying it's worth way less? It's just not right ๐Ÿ™„. I hope whoever buys it can do the place justice and keep it preserved, you know? It's an amazing piece of history ๐Ÿ .

I'm shocked they're listing it for 350k, I mean, I know it's got history and all that, but come on, $2 million in restoration costs is a lot to ask from some new owner ๐Ÿคฏ. And what's up with Fannie Mae just holding onto it for so long? They could've been working on the restoration instead of sitting on their hands ๐Ÿ˜’. I'm glad preservation groups like Landmarks Illinois and Preservation Chicago are keeping an eye on this, but I hope whoever buys it has the means to do it justice ๐Ÿ’ช. The thought of that beautiful home being neglected is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ’”.
