Man Arrested for Stabbing Incident at Manhattan Subway Station
A violent confrontation at a SoHo subway station last week has led to the arrest of a 28-year-old man, Dariel Castillo, who is being charged with assault. According to authorities, Castillo and a 51-year-old stranger got into an argument in the mezzanine before Castillo approached him and stabbed the other man multiple times in the back.
Castillo was taken into custody around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday and has been linked to the January 28 incident at the Broadway-Lafayette station. He is currently being held while facing assault charges, with information about his lawyer not yet available.
The victim suffered stab wounds but remains stable after receiving medical attention at Bellevue Hospital. Castillo lives in East Harlem's NYCHA Jefferson Houses, according to police.
Separate incident reported
Meanwhile, police are also seeking the help of the public regarding a separate stabbing that occurred on a J train in Chinatown on Tuesday. A 15-year-old boy was allegedly stabbed and wounded by a teenager who had no prior relationship with him. The assailant fled the scene before authorities could apprehend them.
Crime spike
The two incidents are part of an ongoing trend of rising transit crime in Lower Manhattan, which has seen a tripling of reported incidents so far this year compared to the same period last year. Transit officials have reported a 10% increase in overall crimes across the city, with grand larcenies accounting for most of the reports. Assaults are also on the rise, with felony incidents up by 52 as of February 1.
Police are working to identify and apprehend those responsible for these violent attacks, emphasizing public safety above all else.
