Mandelson Under Fire as Police Scandal Unfolds over Alleged Leak of Market-Sensitive Information to Epstein
Former Labour MP Peter Mandelson is facing a possible police investigation into his alleged leak of market-sensitive information to Jeffrey Epstein at the height of the financial crisis. The US Department of Justice has released a cache of disclosures relating to Epstein, which include emails forwarded to him by Mandelson while he was business secretary under Gordon Brown.
Newly revealed emails appear to show that Mandelson sent sensitive information about government policy measures and asset sales to Epstein, sparking widespread outrage in parliament. MPs lined up on Monday to express their fury over what they see as a breach of trust.
Labour leader Keir Starmer has ordered an investigation by the cabinet secretary and demanded Mandelson's resignation from the House of Lords. Brown has also asked for an investigation into the alleged leaks to Epstein, calling them "shocking new information".
Mandelson forwarded emails containing confidential information about government policy measures and asset sales to Epstein in 2009, including a memo outlining ยฃ20bn in saleable assets. He later confirmed that the UK government was planning a bailout package for the euro the day before it was announced.
Epstein responded by asking Mandelson what "salable (sic) assets" he was referring to, and one reply said: "Land, property I guess". This was just months before the government announced plans to raise ยฃ16bn from asset sales.
A former adviser described Mandelson's conduct as "treacherous", saying they hoped the police would investigate. Nick Butler, who penned the memo, reported that he considered reporting the matter to the police at the time and is now disgusted by the breach of trust.
The Metropolitan police have confirmed receiving reports relating to alleged misconduct in a public office and are considering whether to launch a criminal investigation. A spokesperson for No 10 said: "It is rightly for the police to determine whether to investigate and the government stands ready to provide whatever support and assistance the police need".
Mandelson's actions have also raised questions about his judgment and closeness to senior Labour figures, including chief of staff Morgan McSweeney and health secretary Wes Streeting. Starmer is now facing renewed questions over his appointment of Mandelson as US ambassador.
The House of Lords has been called upon to urgently modernise its disciplinary procedures in order to strip Mandelson of his peerage. However, there is no precedent for removing a specific person from the upper chamber and it would require primary legislation.
