Masked thugs, sneering elites and terrified citizens: a picture of the US today. We used to have a name for this | Marina Hyde

In the US, it's become all too easy to spot a nation in crisis. Last Saturday, with protests against ICE agents shooting a protesting nurse, and then a White House premiere of a propaganda film about Melania Trump, it was clear that something fundamental has broken in this country. What's now on display is the stark contrast between the rhetoric and reality of a government that proudly proclaims itself to be the land of the free.

For the rest of us outside America, we've been subjected to an endless stream of soundbites about what this US government thinks of us. We're expected to swallow all sorts of doublespeak and half-truths without question. But one thing's for certain – it's becoming increasingly difficult to take seriously the claims of a president who thinks nothing of disparaging countries with "shithole" populations.

The image that keeps popping up is one of ICE agents, often dressed in civilian clothes, yet still sporting a level of intimidation and aggression that's hardly consistent with the notion of public servants. And what about their uniforms? They look more like something out of a bad action movie than a legitimate law enforcement outfit. Can we really think that Trump's storm detachment will ever achieve any level of style or cohesion, no matter how hard they try?

Meanwhile, in Washington D.C., it was business as usual for the White House elite and their closest allies. A premiere event that passed muster with Melania Trump, even though her "documentary" is little more than a slickly produced PR exercise designed to burnish her image. And what about the guests? They were an eclectic bunch, including Tim Cook, who showed up looking like a man out of place – a bit like the odd one out at a QAnon shaman convention.

The most striking aspect of all this is how the US has managed to turn its entire society into a platform for propaganda and disinformation. There's death threats being hurled about with abandon, because that's what happens when you have a president who thinks nothing of demonizing others just to get his way. It's enough to make one wonder if there's still any truth left in this country.

Tourism is taking a hit, too – and it's not hard to see why. Who among us can honestly say they'd want to visit a nation where its leaders seem so disconnected from reality? The US used to be the land of the free, but now it looks like that freedom has been hijacked by those who think they're above the law.

The National Rifle Association stepped in with some astonishing comments about the shooting of Alex Pretti, an innocent man who had done nothing wrong. They seemed more concerned with defending the rights of gun-toting enthusiasts than with condemning an unjust act of violence against a peaceful protester. It's enough to make one wonder if there are still any limits to this nation's willingness to indulge in self-righteous posturing.

As for those ordinary folks who took to the streets to defend ICE, they look like something out of a dystopian nightmare – brainwashed and convinced that their government is fighting for their rights. It's a chilling sight, and one that leaves much of the rest of us feeling bewildered and concerned about what the future may hold.

One thing is certain: the US has come to a crossroads, and it's not clear which path it will choose. Will we see a return to some semblance of sanity and civility, or will this nation continue down the road of self-delusion? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure – the world is watching with great interest.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the whole situation in the US rn 🤯 its like they're living in a parallel universe where reality doesn't apply 😂 I mean what's up with this "shithole" comment though? Like, how can you just say that out loud and expect people to take you seriously? And don't even get me started on those ICE agents in civilian clothes... they look like they're straight out of a bad action movie 🤣 but for real tho, the whole situation is getting really scary. It's like, can we please just have some basic human decency around here? 🙏 and btw, who thought it was a good idea to premiere a propaganda film about Melania Trump 🎥

omg 😱 have you seen that new documentary about Melania Trump?! 🎥 she looks so calm and collected lol like what even is this supposed to be? 🤷‍♀️ anyway i'm still team trump all day erry day 🙌 he's a genius in my eyes 👏 can't believe people are being so dramatic over some ice agents doing their job 💼 i mean it's not like they're trying to be mean or anything 😒 what's next? are we gonna start worrying about the fashion choices of our presidents too?! 👗😂

I don't think Melania Trump has made a documentary 🤔📺. I've checked and couldn't find any info about her making a doco. This whole thing seems like another PR stunt to me 💁‍♀️.

And have you seen the uniforms of ICE agents? They look super casual 👕👖. Where's the blue for their faces?! It's hard to take them seriously with that look on 👮‍♂️.

It's wild how the US has become so good at spreading propaganda 📰. It's like they're trying to convince everyone that this is all true 😒. I'm not buying it, and neither should you 🤷‍♀️.

I do hope tourism in the US picks up soon 🌏. The country's got a lot of amazing sights and experiences to offer, but right now, it's hard to ignore the drama and tension 🎭.

😒 I'm so over the drama and doublespeak from our friends across the pond! 🤣 It's like they're constantly trying to spin reality into their own brand of crazy. The whole ICE agent situation is just wild - who dresses up in civilian clothes but still looks like a law enforcement robot? 🤖 And don't even get me started on that "documentary" about Melania Trump... sounds like pure propaganda 💁‍♀️.

And can we talk about the guests at that premiere event? Tim Cook looking out of place is one thing, but what's with the whole vibe of it being a PR stunt for the White House elite? 🎉 It's just another example of how this government thinks it's above the law. And let's not forget those death threats - yikes! 😱

I'm not sure what's more disturbing, though: the fact that the US has become so good at spreading disinformation or the fact that people are actually eating it up like it's going out of style 🤯. It's hard to take seriously a president who thinks "shithole" is a valid term for anyone they don't like. 🚽

As someone who's not American, it's pretty concerning to see how much the country has deviated from its founding principles. I hope they can snap out of this self-delusion soon and get back on track - but until then, I'll be over here watching with great interest 😂.

omg i'm getting chills thinking about that nurse being shot by ICE agents 🤕 it's like how can't we even trust our own govt anymore? they're always spewing hate speech & half truths 🙄 and now this whole "documentary" about Melania Trump is just a PR exercise 🎬👀 i mean what's next? gonna make up some fake news about my kid's school or something 🤯

and those tourists must be thinking twice before visiting the US now 🚫 it's not exactly the land of the free & the home of the brave anymore 😒 more like a dystopian nightmare 🌑 where you're constantly walking on eggshells, wondering when you'll get "attacked" by the govt 🤹‍♀️ or just another brainwashed sheep in the streets protesting for their rights 🙃 ugh, it's all so messed up 😩

I'm just gonna say it... 🤷‍♀️ America is having a major identity crisis 💁‍♀️ and honestly, who can blame them? The whole "land of the free" vibe is starting to feel like a joke 🤡. I mean, who lets their agents go around shooting at protesters in broad daylight? 😱 Not exactly the most reassuring sight... And don't even get me started on that "documentary" about Melania Trump – more like a cringeworthy infomercial 📺. As for those tourists thinking of visiting the US anytime soon? Yeah, maybe think twice 🤔.

OMG u guys i cant even 🤯 the US is literally crumbling before our eyes!!1! how can a country that claims to be free and all about liberty just be soooo messed up ?? like what happened w/ the nurse protest and the ICE agents shooting her and now they got some propaganda film out about melania trump?!?! what kinda crazy talk is that?? 🙄

and dont even get me started on trump himself he's like a master manipulator or something i mean come on, shithole countries? who says stuff like that ?? its just soooo sad tho that ppl are actually buying into it 🤷‍♀️

but what really gets me is the whole tourism thing lol i mean if u cant even visit the country cuz its just too messed up w/ all the hate and drama 😂 how can anyone trust that its a safe place to go on vacation?? 🙅‍♂️

I'm worried about what's going on in the US 🤕. It feels like they're living in a bad movie where nothing makes sense. The president's words are all over the place and it's hard to know what's real and what's not 🙃. I mean, who says "shithole" countries? That just sounds crazy 😱. And those ICE agents, they look like they're from a different planet 👽. They should be helping people, not intimidating them.

I don't get why the White House is so obsessed with that propaganda film about Melania Trump 🎥. It's like they want to distract us from the real issues. And what's up with all these death threats? It feels like everyone's just losing their cool 😤.

Tourism is definitely taking a hit, and I don't blame people for not wanting to visit a country that doesn't seem to know what it's doing 🗺️. The US used to be all about freedom, but now it feels like they're more interested in controlling people's thoughts than protecting their rights 💬.

I'm just hoping that someone will come along and snap them out of this madness 😅. Until then, I'll be watching from the sidelines, trying not to worry too much about what the future might hold 🤞.

🤔 The whole thing feels like a never-ending circus, doesn't it? First off, I gotta say that Trump's behavior is just straight up weird, you know? Like, what even is the deal with the "shithole" comment? And don't even get me started on those ICE agents – they look like they just stepped out of a bad action movie. 😂 But for real though, it's kinda sad that the US has fallen so low. I mean, who wants to visit a country where the leaders are basically spewing propaganda 24/7? 🤦‍♀️ The NRA's response to Alex Pretti's shooting was just straight up terrifying... like, how can they be so apathetic about human life?! 🙄

I'm so worried about what's happening in the US right now 🤕🌎. It seems like the government is losing touch with reality and it's getting to a point where you can't trust anything they say. I mean, come on, who uses the term "shithole" to describe countries? That's just plain rude! 👀 And don't even get me started on the ICE agents – they look like they're from another planet or something 😂. The fact that the White House is hosting a premiere event for a propaganda film about Melania Trump is just mind-boggling 🤯.

It's so frustrating to see how the US has become a platform for propaganda and disinformation. I don't want to visit America right now, to be honest 😕. And what's going on with the NRA? They're supposed to be defending gun rights, but it seems like they're just more concerned with defending their own interests 🤷‍♂️.

I'm not sure what the future holds for America, but I do know that this is a major wake-up call for the rest of the world. We need to pay attention and see how this situation unfolds 👀💬

🤔 I'm so done with the US right now... like, what even is going on over there? 🙄 The fact that they're trying to spin this whole ICE thing as some kind of heroic act just makes me wanna facepalm 💁‍♀️. And don't even get me started on Melania's "documentary" – it sounds like total trash to me 🚮. I mean, can't we just have a president who speaks the truth without all the drama and propaganda? 😩 It's getting to the point where I'm not even sure what's real anymore... 🤯

😕 I'm really saddened by what's going on in the US right now 🤕 it feels like they're losing sight of what truly matters: treating each other with kindness and respect ❤️. The fact that they're resorting to propaganda and disinformation to get their way is a major red flag ⚠️. And have you seen those ICE agents' uniforms? 😂 they look like something out of a bad action movie! Not exactly the image I want to see when I think of public servants 👮‍♂️.

As for tourism, I don't blame anyone for not wanting to visit a place where freedom seems to be under attack 🤷‍♀️. The US was always about being a beacon of hope and democracy, but now it just feels like they're trying to control people's minds 🤯. It's scary to think about what the future holds.

We need more people speaking out against this kind of behavior and demanding change 💪. Maybe then we can get back on track and focus on being a positive force for good in the world 🌎💖

I'm still trying to wrap my head around all these developments 🤯. It seems like the US government is trying to pull off some serious spin control here, and I'm not buying it entirely 😒. I mean, the whole ICE thing was just ridiculous – those agents looking all intimidating in their civilian clothes? Give me a break 😂. And what's up with this "documentary" about Melania Trump? Sounds like more PR nonsense to me 📺.

I do think it's time for some serious scrutiny of Trump's behavior, though. The whole "shithole" comment thing was just outrageous, and it's no wonder people are getting frustrated 😤. But at the same time, I'm not convinced that all these protests and rallies are being genuinely spontaneous – there might be some organization behind them 🤔.

The thing is, the US has always prided itself on its freedom of speech and press, but now it feels like those rights are being curtailed by people in power 📰. It's a bit concerning, to say the least. And let's not forget about that tourism downturn – yeah, I wouldn't want to visit the States right now either 😕.

But here's the thing: we can't just write off the entire US government as corrupt or whatever 🤷‍♀️. There are still plenty of good people working behind the scenes to make a difference 💪. It's just that their voices need to be louder and more prominent in the conversation, you know?

I'm so done with Trump's rhetoric 🙄. Like, who uses words like that in public? It's just so divisive and ignorant. But at the same time, I think we need to be real about how some people are going to react to it - there will always be folks who are super passionate and willing to take a stand (or get hurt trying). And let's not forget ICE agents... those uniforms are just sketchy 😂. Like, who thought that was a good idea? It's all so weird.

And what really got me is how the White House tries to spin stuff like this with these fancy events 🎬. It feels so staged and insincere. And Tim Cook showing up at one of those things... I don't get it either 🤷‍♀️. But I do think the US is having a major crisis moment right now, and we're all just kinda waiting to see what happens next 🕰️.

The NRA's comments about the Alex Pretti shooting were wild too 😲. Like, can't they just condemn the violence without all the gun lobby nonsense? And those protesters who took to the streets... it was like something out of a bad sci-fi movie 👽. But hey, at least we're having this conversation now. Maybe that's the start of something good 💬?
