Michigan among top 5 U.S. states sending athletes to the Winter Olympics in Italy - Detroit Metro Times

Michigan sends its fair share of Winter Olympians to Italy, with 15 athletes hailing from the Great Lakes State set to compete in the Milano Cortina Games. The state takes a respectable fifth spot overall, behind Colorado, Minnesota, California, and Utah.

From Detroit's snowbelt communities such as Farmington Hills, Plymouth, and Grosse Pointes, figure skater Evan Bates will be joined by ice hockey stars Megan Keller from Farmington Hills, Kirsten Simms from Plymouth, and Zach Werenski from Grosse Pointe Woods. Snowboarder Jake Vedder from Pinckney will also don the red, white, and blue.

Michigan's other Winter Olympians include figure skater Christina Carreira from Saint Clair, ice hockey stars Connor Hellebuyck from Commerce, Jack Hughes from Canton, and Quinn Hughes from Canton, as well as freestyle skiers Kaila Kuhn from Boyne City and Winter Vinecki from Gaylord. Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin will also represent the state in ice hockey.

These athletes are no surprise, given Michigan's reputation for producing talented snow sports enthusiasts. With 15 Olympians calling the state home, it seems like the Great Lakes State is well-represented at this year's Winter Games.

I don’t usually comment but... I think it’s awesome that Michigan has such a strong presence in the Winter Olympics 🤩! You can tell they've got some amazing snow sports enthusiasts coming out of those communities like Farmington Hills and Plymouth. It's no surprise with all the lakes and snowy winters up there 😊. I mean, figure skater Evan Bates is already making waves, and now he’s competing in the Milano Cortina Games? That's lit! 🎉 And to think they're taking fifth spot overall? Still pretty impressive if you ask me 🤔. Michigan must be doing something right when it comes to producing talented athletes 💪

I'M SO PUMPED FOR THESE MICHIGAN ATHLETES!!! IT'S AMAZING TO SEE ALL THESE TALENTED PEOPLE FROM THE GREAT LAKES STATE GETTING A CHANCE TO COMPETE ON THE WORLD STAGE 🤩🎿💨 I MEAN, WE'VE ALWAYS KNOWN THAT MICHIGAN IS A SNOW SPORTS FANS FAVORITE STATE, BUT IT'S SWEET TO SEE IT OFFICIAL NOW 😊. FROM DETROIT TO TRAVERSE CITY, THESE ATHLETES ARE REPPING THE Mitten WITH PRIDE 🎉🇺🇸 AND I COULDN'T BE MORE PROUD!!!

so michigan is doin alright with their olympics 🤝 i mean, 15 athletes from the state is a pretty cool achievement, especially considering they're not as big of a sports powerhouse as some other states like california or utah. but hey, it's still awesome to see michiganders crushin' it on the snowboard, ice hockey, and figure skating scenes 🏂🏒❄️

🤔 Italy better watch out for those Mitten State skaters... Evan Bates and Christina Carreira are gonna give 'em a run for their money on the ice 🎿💨 And I'm not sold on Zach Werenski yet, he's got potential but I think he's still trying to find his footing 🏒️ Still, 15 athletes from one state is pretty impressive, gotta respect that.

I'm not surprised to see so many Michiganders making a splash in Italy 🤗. It's great that we're getting some recognition for our winter sports enthusiasts! But, I do think it's a bit suspicious that all the top spots go to states with way more population than us... like, Colorado and Utah have 5x the population of Michigan? 🤔 Still, it's awesome that our athletes are crushing it out there in the snow! And who knows, maybe we're just holding back on the medals until the next Games 😜.

ummm so michigan sent like a lot of people to winter olympics? that's kinda cool 🤔 i wonder how they prepared for it, like did they train in europe or something? and whats with the different events, like ice hockey and figure skating? which one do you think is harder to compete at?

also, i feel bad for the snowboarders 🌨️ its soooo cold! but i guess thats why theyre good at it. and michigans rep is pretty solid, 15 people from the state are going? that's a lot! what if one of them wins an olympic gold medal or something? would that make everyone in michigan super proud? 🤗

You know I love seeing these athletes from all over Michigan out there killing it on the world stage! What strikes me here though is how many of these athletes have to call a snowbelt community their home - Farmington Hills, Plymouth, Grosse Pointe Woods... they're literally in the midst of Winter wonderland. It makes you think about how much talent we've been living right under our noses all this time 😊. I mean, it's not just about natural ability, but also the environment and upbringing that shapes who we are as people. These athletes aren't just lucky to have had access to snow sports from a young age - they're also products of communities that nurtured them into world-class competitors. It gives me hope for our future generations! 🌟

I think its awesome that Michigans got a solid team for these Winter Olympics 🏅🎿! I mean we all know the state loves snow sports, but its still cool to see so many talented athletes from different parts of Michigan getting to represent their hometowns on the world stage 🌟. Farmington Hills has been killing it in figure skating and ice hockey lately, with Evan Bates and Megan Keller both doing amazingly well - hope they bring home some medals! ❄️
