Michigan sends its fair share of Winter Olympians to Italy, with 15 athletes hailing from the Great Lakes State set to compete in the Milano Cortina Games. The state takes a respectable fifth spot overall, behind Colorado, Minnesota, California, and Utah.
From Detroit's snowbelt communities such as Farmington Hills, Plymouth, and Grosse Pointes, figure skater Evan Bates will be joined by ice hockey stars Megan Keller from Farmington Hills, Kirsten Simms from Plymouth, and Zach Werenski from Grosse Pointe Woods. Snowboarder Jake Vedder from Pinckney will also don the red, white, and blue.
Michigan's other Winter Olympians include figure skater Christina Carreira from Saint Clair, ice hockey stars Connor Hellebuyck from Commerce, Jack Hughes from Canton, and Quinn Hughes from Canton, as well as freestyle skiers Kaila Kuhn from Boyne City and Winter Vinecki from Gaylord. Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin will also represent the state in ice hockey.
These athletes are no surprise, given Michigan's reputation for producing talented snow sports enthusiasts. With 15 Olympians calling the state home, it seems like the Great Lakes State is well-represented at this year's Winter Games.
