My favorite folding phone is the one that doesn’t exist yet

The quest for the perfect foldable phone – a device that seamlessly blends the functionality of a computer with the convenience of a smartphone. For Allison Johnson, senior reviewer at The Verge, the current offerings in this space fall short of her lofty expectations.

Johnson's journey began with the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. While both devices excelled in certain areas – like their robust dust resistance for the former – they were also weighed down by limitations. For instance, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold's substantial weight made it a cumbersome companion on longer trips. Conversely, the Galaxy Z Fold 7's lightness belied its lack of full dust protection.

One notable omission on both phones was the presence of integrated Qi2 magnets, which enable seamless pairing with external chargers and accessories. This feature proved particularly problematic for Johnson, who found herself fiddling with low-profile cases that added bulk to her otherwise slim device.

A more practical issue arose when using the Galaxy Z Fold 7 on flat surfaces – its propensity to wobble caused it to stumble while capturing images. Here again, a simple ring stand would have alleviated this problem, but one Johnson couldn't bring herself to use due to a lingering aversion to cases.

When it came to software, however, both phones proved surprisingly palatable. The Pixel's Android implementation remained intuitive and user-friendly, while Samsung's permissive approach to running multiple apps on the inner screen proved a welcome respite from the clutter of preloaded applications.

Johnson's conclusion? A perfect foldable phone remains an elusive dream – one that must balance competing demands for performance, portability, and usability. As she wistfully notes, "I've been greedy here because I've seen so much potential in these devices over the past few months... but if you'll indulge me for a minute, I'm being greedy here because I've never been so convinced about their real-world utility as I am now."

Ultimately, Johnson's quest serves as a poignant reminder that even the most advanced technologies can fall short of our lofty expectations – a sobering truth we'd do well to confront head-on in our pursuit of innovation.

omg i feel like allison jones 😂 she's been testing out these foldable phones for ages and it's like they're so close but still not quite there 🤔 my biggest issue with them is the weight and bulk of the cases, idk how people are gonna rock these on long trips or anything 😅 and yeah a ring stand would make all the difference lol 👀 at least she likes the software tho, that's def one thing these phones get right 💻

🤔 i feel like these foldable phones are still in beta testing, you know? they're so close to being perfect but there's just that one thing holding them back 🚀 like jessica from techcrunch said, the camera game needs a major upgrade ASAP 🔥 also, who else is tired of all the bulk from cases? i swear, i've had my phone stuck in this ring stand for months and it's still not worth it 😂

You know what's wild? I was at this music festival last weekend and there were these tiny little portable speakers everywhere 🎶. Like, you could just clip them to your backpack or purse and listen to tunes on the go. And they're so affordable too! I swear, I saw a pair for like $20 🤑. It's crazy how much tech has shrunk down in recent years.

🤔 just read this article and i'm kinda disappointed with these foldable phones lol... they're like, super useful but also super flawed at the same time? like who makes a phone that wobbles on flat surfaces tho? 🤯 anyways, i feel j Johnson's pain her expectations were way too high and it's hard to see these devices living up to them fully. still, gotta give props for trying to make foldables more practical 🎉 [https://www.theverge.com/2025/02/10...w-google-pixel-10-pro-samsung-galaxy-z-fold-7]

I feel me 🤔... Allison Johnson is being pretty honest about how much these foldable phones need improvement, but I still love the idea behind them! I mean, who wouldn't want to snap open a phone and get a full computer screen? But yeah, weight and dust resistance are key, like she said. And those Qi2 magnets would be a game-changer for me... no more fiddling with cases 🙄. The Samsung one's camera issues had me wincing too 😩. I'm just glad the software is solid on both phones. It's all about finding that sweet spot between performance, portability, and usability, you know? 👍

omg i'm literally with allison on this foldable phone thing 🤯 i mean dont get me wrong i love tech and i was stoked when the first foldables dropped but like after using them for a bit i realized they're just not practical enough for daily life lol my pixel 10 pro fold was so heavy it made my shoulder ache after a few hours of use and the galaxy z fold 7's wobbly screen is still giving me nightmares 😂 i need a good ring stand stat!! and dont even get me started on the software i mean google's android implementation is fire but samsung's approach to multiple apps on the inner screen is just meh 🤷‍♀️ anyway i guess what allison said is true we need foldables that balance performance, portability, and usability cuz right now they're just not getting it 🙄

I don’t usually comment but... I feel like these foldable phones are making some really great points about usability 🤯. Like, who thought it was a good idea to design something that wobbles on flat surfaces? 😂 And honestly, I can relate to Allison's frustration with cases adding bulk to her device – I've had similar issues with my current phone case. But you know what would make these phones even better? More affordable options 🤑. Like, I'm all for innovation, but $1,500 is just out of reach for me, you feel? 😅

📱🤔 umm so i think foldable phones are like really cool but also kinda meh rn 🤷‍♂️ i mean they got some great features like the qi2 magnets which is def a game changer 💻 but at the same time they have these major flaws like wobbling on flat surfaces and being super heavy 📦👀 it's like what even is the point of having a phone that can do everything except be super convenient to use? 🤔 also i'm not even mad about the cases lol 🎉

🤔 I feel like we're still in the early days of foldable phones and manufacturers are experimenting with different design choices 📱💻. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold's weight issue is a bummer, but at least it has that awesome dust resistance feature 😅. Samsung's Z Fold 7 wobbling on flat surfaces is kinda annoying though... anyone know if the next gen will have a better stand or just be happy with case users 🤷‍♀️?

Ugh this is like the ultimate goal for phone makers right now 💔😩 it's like they're constantly pushing the limit but still missing the mark 🤯 i mean who hasn't had those moments where you just wanna throw your phone across the room because it's too frustrating to use? 😤 but at the same time i can relate to allison johson's frustration, we've been waiting for so long for a perfect foldable phone and now that it's finally on our radar, they're still holding us back 🙄 what i'd love is if manufacturers would focus on making the little things work instead of just throwing more tech at the problem 💪

I gotta say, foldable phones still seem like a bit of a compromise 🤔. I mean, you get all these amazing features like an extra screen and whatnot, but then there's the weight/size issue... it's just so hard to convince me that one's gonna be perfect 💯. Allison's right, it's all about balance - performance, portability, usability... how do you prioritize that? I'd love to see someone come out with a better solution 🤞. The ring stand idea is genius btw, why didn't I think of that?! 😂

I'm like totally with Allison on this one 🤦‍♀️... I mean, who wants a phone that's basically just a giant tablet but you can fold it up and put it in your pocket? It sounds like a sweet setup, but honestly, the trade-offs don't seem worth it to me. Like, I love the idea of having all that computer power at my fingertips, but if it means sacrificing usability and convenience... no thanks 🚫. And let's be real, we've been seeing some crazy tech trends come out lately, so maybe it's time to take a step back and focus on what really matters: making our phones actually useful and easy to use 😊.

ugh i'm still waiting for them to get this right!!! 😩 i mean, who wants a phone that's just gonna be heavy and clunky on long trips? and don't even get me started on the charging thing 🚫 qi2 magnets are literally the simplest feature to implement and yet no one seems to have gotten it right yet. and what's with the wobble issues? like, can we please just get a phone that's gonna sit still when you're trying to take a selfie? 📸 anyway, i guess johnson's right, innovation is all about balancing stuff but it's not like we haven't been promised the moon by tech companies before... 🌕

Interesting 🤔 ...the lack of integrated Qi2 magnets on those phones is kinda annoying 🙄... I mean, who doesn't need a seamless charging experience with their phone? And the wobbling issue on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is so weird 😂... like, come on Samsung, get it together! 💯

Wow 🤯 Interesting how Allison Johnson still holds out hope for a perfect foldable phone after testing out those devices, especially with all the limitations she mentioned like weight and stability issues 😳

I don't know how many more foldable phones I need to try before I get one that doesn't feel like a brick in my pocket 🤯📱. I mean, who thought it was a good idea to put a screen on the inside of a phone? It's just too much. And don't even get me started on the cases - they add so much bulk and make it hard to use certain features. I've tried the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, and while they're both pretty cool, they just haven't convinced me yet. Maybe I'm just being too picky? But seriously, who's responsible for designing these things? 😒

i totally feel her!!! 😩 i mean, who doesn't want a phone that can basically do everything except fold up into a tiny paperclip 🤯? but seriously, it's like they're playing catch-up with the qi2 magnet thing... how hard is it to get that right?! and don't even get me started on the camera wobble issue - i swear, if they just added a little ring stand accessory, problem solved! 📸💡

OMG you feel me on this 🤯 foldable phone saga! So like, I was reading this review by Allison Johnson and it's giving me life... or is it a disappointment? 🤔 Anyway, the stats are out: Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold = 4.2/5, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 = 3.8/5 on the Data Dumper scale 📊

And don't even get me started on those Qi2 magnets - 75% of users want that feature, but only 27% got it 🤷‍♀️ Samsung should've included those in every foldable phone from Day 1!

Now, about software... 📈 Android is still the winner here (97% user satisfaction) vs. Samsung's "inner screen" chaos (63%). On a scale of 1-10, I'd say these phones are both solid 6s, but who needs perfect when you can have great? 😊
