N.J. extends blood shortage emergency and American Red Cross offers gift cards to donors

New Jersey has extended its blood shortage emergency for another two weeks, as the state continues to grapple with the impact of severe winter weather that has disrupted life-saving donations.

The American Red Cross is stepping in to alleviate the crisis by offering $20 gift cards to donors who schedule appointments to give blood or platelets between now and Wednesday. The organization had initially declared the emergency on January 6, citing a 40% decline in donations following the winter holidays and lingering effects of the flu season.

The shortage has left New Jersey's 200 hospitals with less than a two-day supply of resources, according to Jeannie Mascolini, vice president of blood operations at New York Blood Center and New Jersey Blood Services. "This storm could not have come at a worse time," she said. "We were just starting to rebuild the blood supply when nearly 2,000 lifesaving donations were lost in a matter of days."

The crisis highlights the importance of regular blood donations, with eligible individuals able to donate every 56 days as long as they are in good health and feeling generally well. Donors can schedule appointments online or by calling 1-800-933-2566.

With winter storm Fern covering a vast area of the country, over 7,000 blood and platelet donations went uncollected due to cancelled blood drives, leaving patients with essential medical needs without adequate supplies. "Patients don't get a snow day," Mascolini emphasized. "Surgeries, cancer treatments, traumas and emergencies continue, and we need donors to help us recover."

Ugh, this is just getting worse πŸ€•. Can you believe it's been 2 weeks already since they first declared the emergency? I mean, what's going on with people not being able to donate blood on time? πŸ™„ And now they're extending it for another 2 weeks? That's just cruel. The American Red Cross is trying to help with gift cards and all, but come on... $20 isn't even enough to cover the cost of a pint of blood, let alone the emotional toll of knowing your donation could've saved someone's life πŸ€‘. And poor Jeannie Mascolini is just saying "this storm couldn't have come at a worse time". Like, what's the point of even having winter? Can we just get some decent weather already? β˜ƒοΈπŸ’”

omg can u believe this winter storm is ruining everything especially blood donations 🀯 I mean what even is the point of having 200 hospitals if they cant get enough blood lol seriously though how do u expect ppl to donate with all these cancellations? and dont even get me started on those 7k donations that went uncollected like whats the deal with that? so many people are suffering because ppl are too scared to give blood now πŸ˜” we need more people to come forward & help out n jess the american red cross is doing a good job w/ those $20 gift cards tho lets all do our part & donate ASAP πŸ’–

Ugh, can u believe this?! 🀯 New Jersey is literally struggling with a blood shortage crisis & it's not just the hospitals that are affected, but all those ppl who rely on surgeries & medical treatments πŸ€•. I mean, 7k donations uncollected because of winter storms? That's just insane! πŸ’₯ The American Red Cross offering $20 gift cards to donors is a good start, but we need more solutions to this problem ASAP πŸ’Έ.

It's crazy that the shortage has left hospitals with less than a 2-day supply of resources. It's not like they can just shut down or postpone surgeries because of the weather 🌨️. Patients' lives are at risk here & it's our responsibility as citizens to help out 🌟.

I'm all for regular blood donations – every 56 days is reasonable, right? πŸ’ͺ🏽 We need more ppl stepping up to donate & support these hospitals during this crisis ❀️. This winter storm Fern might be bad news, but we can turn it into something positive by donating blood & helping those in need πŸŒˆπŸ’–

πŸ€” I'm so down for people giving more blood, 'cause it's literally life-saving, but at the same time... have you seen the prices of bus tickets lately? $20 is like, super cheap, you feel me? πŸ’Έ They should be paying donors instead of giving them gift cards. It's all good tho, I guess. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ On one hand, we need blood donations ASAP, but on another hand... what if people just stop donating 'cause they're worried about the $20? πŸ˜’

I'm like super concerned about this whole situation πŸ€•. 200 hospitals in NJ with less than a 2-day supply? That's crazy! I mean, I get it, winter weather can be a real bummer, but can't they just, like, prepare for emergencies or something?

And $20 gift cards to donors is nice and all, but what about the actual donations themselves? Like, where are they coming from? Is it just the American Red Cross stepping in, or are other organizations helping out too?

I'm also curious about this 40% decline in donations after the winter holidays. What's going on there? Are people really that burned out from giving blood over the holidays, or is there something else going on?

And what's with all these cancelled blood drives? Like, couldn't they've just, you know, postponed them or rescheduled? It seems like a lot of unnecessary cancellations to me... πŸ€”

Blood shortages are crazy rn 🀯 Winter's really messed up the donation schedule... hospitals are super low on resources πŸš‘πŸ’‰ 200+ 2-day supply? That's bad πŸ€• Need more ppl to donate & stay healthy πŸ’ͺ🏼

πŸ€• ugh this winter storm is literally killing ppl 🌨️ like seriously how r ppl gonna survive without blood donations? 😩 i mean i get it, severe weather disrupts everything, but 200 hospitals w/ less than a 2-day supply of resources?! πŸ’‰ that's crazy! 🀯 the americ red cross is tryin to help by givin donors $20 gift cards tho 🎁 which is super cool! πŸ‘ and i love how jeannie mascolini is keepin it real, like "patients don't get a snow day" lol πŸ‘€ u gotta donate blood every 56 days, it's not that hard ppl πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ let's get those donations in! πŸ’•

Ugh, this blood shortage thing is really getting old πŸ™„. I mean, can't people just schedule their appointments online like everyone else? It's not that hard, right? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ And now the Red Cross is offering $20 gift cards to donors... it feels like they're trying to bribe us or something πŸ˜’. Like, come on, regular folks are already struggling with snow day work-from-home vibes, don't make us give blood too. 🌨️

And what's up with these severe winter weather storms? Can't we just have a decent 30-day window without a freak snowstorm ruining everything? It's like the universe is trying to keep us from our daily appointments πŸ’ͺ. I mean, patients are counting on this stuff... no wonder there's a shortage 😟.

I guess what really gets me is that it feels like we're being asked to do all the heavy lifting again 🀝. Can't these hospitals just get some backup supplies or something? Is it too much to ask for a little bit of planning and foresight? πŸ“…

ugh this is so not good! ❄️ the blood shortage in NJ is already bad enough but now it's getting worse with all these cancellations due to winter weather... 200 hospitals with less than a 2-day supply of resources? that's crazy! 🀯 I feel for all the patients who need those lifesaving donations and can't get them because of this storm. regular blood donations are so important, like, we should be able to donate every 56 days and not have to worry about these emergencies... I hope people start donating soon or else it's gonna be a disaster! πŸ’‰πŸ˜¬

Man... this is like, so eye-opening 🀯. I was reading this article about the blood shortage in New Jersey and it's just crazy how one winter storm can disrupt everything. But you know what really got me thinking? It's not just about the donations, it's about being reliable when others need us most πŸ’•.

I mean, think about it... life-saving donations are like, a 24/7 job 🀯. You don't get to take breaks or have snow days 🌨️. And yet, we expect ourselves and each other to be there for the people who really need help? It's like, being reliable is key to making a difference in our communities 🌟.

So yeah... let this be a lesson to us all 😊. Let's make sure we're showing up when it matters most, even if it's not always easy or convenient. We never know when someone might need us to save their life πŸ’–.

Ugh πŸ€•, this is just another example of how technology can fail us when it really matters. I mean, think about it - we're so used to online scheduling and automated reminders that when the power goes out or internet connection gets lost, we forget that actual human beings are behind the scenes keeping everything running! πŸ’» And now they're relying on $20 gift cards to get people to donate blood? It's like throwing money at a problem instead of addressing the underlying issue. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad someone's stepping in to help, but can't we find a more sustainable solution? πŸ€”

omg u no wat's goin on in NJ rn 🀯 they're still dealin w/ that blood shortage cuz of the winter weather 😩 like dont they get snow in feb lol? 🌨️ anywayz, i feel 4 them hospitals & patients its so sad 2 hear dat ppl r cancelin donations bc of the storm 🚨 20 bucks isnt gonna make a diff tho πŸ€‘ think they shd be offerin more incentives or smthn πŸ‘

omg this is so crazy they're offering $20 gift cards to donors lol i guess that's one way to encourage ppl to give blood πŸ€‘ but seriously though, 40% decline in donations after winter holidays? that's a huge drop. it's not like people were just avoiding giving blood or something, there's gotta be more behind this shortage. and the fact that hospitals are running low on resources is super alarming... patients shouldn't have to wait for donations to get the care they need πŸ€• what if they're in a life-or-death situation? πŸš‘

Ugh, can you believe this?! 🀯 Winter storm Fern hits just when NJ's blood supply is already super low... like, 40% less donations after the holidays lol. And now they're extending the emergency for another two weeks? That's a whole lotta people struggling to get life-saving help. I mean, $20 gift cards from the American Red Cross might be a nice gesture, but it's not gonna fill those hospital beds right away πŸ€‘. It's crazy that patients are still getting surgeries and treatments without enough blood... like, don't they know about snow days for emergencies? πŸ˜‚ Seriously though, regular donations are key - every 56 days can make a big difference! Should we all be donating more often to avoid this crisis in the future? πŸ€”

Man... thinkin' about this blood shortage thing... it's like, we're so dependent on the generosity of others for our own survival... I mean, can you imagine if every hospital had a 2-day supply of resources? It's crazy how one severe winter weather event can disrupt everything. πŸŒ¨οΈπŸ’‰ And it's not just about the donations themselves, but also the people who are relyin' on 'em... surgeons, cancer patients, trauma victims... their lives are literally hangin' in the balance. It's like, we gotta appreciate the value of a simple blood donation, you know? It's not just about our own well-being, but also about showin' up for others when they need us most... πŸ’–

.. this winter storm is really putting a strain on the blood donation system 🌨️😬. I mean, 40% decline in donations after the holidays is already bad enough, but to have it disrupted by another storm is just devastating πŸ’”. Can you imagine not being able to donate because of weather? It's like life just gets put on hold πŸ•°οΈ. Regular donations are a big help, btw - even if it's every 56 days, it makes a difference πŸ‘. We should all be trying to support our hospitals and medical teams right now ❀️.

Man, this is crazy! 🀯 Winter storms are bad enough, but when it affects the blood supply like that... it's just devastating. I'm not surprised NJ extended the emergency for another two weeks, those hospitals must be scrambling to keep up with demand. $20 gift cards from the American Red Cross is a nice touch though, incentivizing people to donate. The thing is, people always forget about the importance of regular blood donations. It's like, we're so focused on staying healthy that we neglect our role in helping others stay alive 🀝

Aww man... 😞 this is so concerning! I mean, who expects winter weather to hit during the worst time possible? 200 hospitals with less than a two-day supply of resources? That's crazy! 🀯 And it's not just the donations that are affected, but also the patients who need these life-saving supplies. It's like, can't we all just take a deep breath and help each other out for once? 😊

I think this is a great opportunity for people to step up and donate blood. $20 gift cards from the American Red Cross can really motivate someone to roll up their sleeve πŸ›‘οΈ. And I love how Jeannie Mascolini puts it - patients don't get a snow day! πŸ’ͺ We need to be there for each other, especially when we need it most.

Let's all just try to stay calm and help out, shall we? 😌

I'm really worried about the blood shortage in New Jersey πŸ€•. It's crazy how severe winter weather can impact life-saving donations 🌨️. I mean, 40% decline in donations is huge - it's like, what happens if people don't make an effort to donate regularly? πŸ’” The fact that hospitals are running low on resources is super concerning... patients shouldn't have to wait for medical treatments because of bad weather β˜•οΈ. It's all about being prepared and taking care of each other, right? 🀝
