NASA's Staging Show 'Fraggle Rock: A Space-y Adventure' Brings Fraggles and Outer Outer Space Together in Theatrical Production.
A creative collaboration between NASA and the Jim Henson Company has led to an immersive theatrical experience bringing beloved characters from Fraggle Rock into outer space. Uncle Traveling Matt, a familiar figure from the original 1983 series, now serves as the main character in a new stage show titled 'Fraggle Rock: A Space-y Adventure'. This production combines elements of both NASA's deep space exploration plans and the whimsical world of Fraggle Rock.
The story begins at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, where Gobo, Red, and their friends are introduced to the audience. Meanwhile, Uncle Traveling Matt is on a journey through outer space and sends postcards back to his nephew Gobo, sparking curiosity among the other Fraggles about what lies beyond Fraggle Rock.
In this theatrical production, the actors portray not only themselves but also other characters, such as Doozers, which are brought to life in both their full-body puppet form and a smaller puppet size. This creative adaptation allowed for engaging performances and immersive storytelling.
To maintain scale, the Fraggles were up-sized while one of the Doozer puppets was miniaturized. This led to a visually appealing production that blended elements from Fraggle Rock and NASA's space exploration mission.
John Tartaglia, who directed, wrote, choreographed, and voiced Gobo for the show, explained how their universe aligns with NASA's goals: "Our two worlds that on paper wouldn't seem connected, made a lot of sense to connect."
