Newport Beach Film Festival Celebrates Stars of Tomorrow, Honoring Pioneers and Legends in Industry
This Monday at 7:30 pm, PBS SoCal will air the 26th Annual Newport Beach Film Festival Honors, a celebration of up-and-coming actors who have made a name for themselves in Hollywood. The evening features Variety's annual list of "10 Actors to Watch," now boasting an impressive 35 stars who have gone on to receive Academy Award nominations and wins.
Among this year's honorees are Chase Infiniti from "One Battle After Another" and Miles Caton, a newcomer who recently made his film debut in the breakout movie "Sinners." Both artists were visibly moved by their experiences at the festival, with Infiniti reflecting on the opportunity to work alongside industry giants like Paul Thomas Anderson and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Mari Yamamoto took the stage to pay tribute to her "Rental Family" co-star Brendan Fraser, who received the Icon Award for his contributions to film. Fraser recalled a memorable experience while filming in Japan, where he risked his safety to ensure Yamamoto's well-being.
Other notable honorees include Milly Alcock ("Supergirl"), Ella Anderson ("Song Sung Blue"), and Jay Lycurgo ("Steve"). Alumni from past "10 Actors to Watch" lists were also recognized for their outstanding achievements, including Tessa Thompson, Jenny Slate, and Kerry Condon.
The evening's event featured speeches and interviews with honorees, who shared stories about their journeys in the industry. Mark Hamill, a veteran actor known for his iconic role as Luke Skywalker, spoke candidly about his experiences at various stages of his career, from his early days on stage to his current success in voiceover work.
Former Variety editor Steven Gaydos was awarded the Arts Champion Award and took the opportunity to pay tribute to Hamill. Gaydos revealed that he had auditioned for a role in one of Hamill's films but ultimately didn't get the part.
The evening culminated with the presentation of Variety's Legends and Groundbreakers Award to Scarlett Johansson, who recently made her directorial debut with "Eleanor the Great." In accepting the award, Johansson expressed her gratitude to the pioneering artists who paved the way for her own success in directing.
The 26th Annual Newport Beach Film Festival Honors is available to stream on PBS SoCal's website and offers a unique opportunity to celebrate the talents of Hollywood's rising stars alongside industry legends.
