Opinion: ‘Until we meet again, brave little cat.’ The heartbreak and taboo of burying our pets | CNN

In recent years, a significant shift has been observed in human attitudes towards their deceased pets. While it's common for humans to bury their loved ones in cemeteries as a means of closure, many pet owners struggle to find an appropriate outlet to express their grief and acknowledge the depth of their emotional bond with their animals.

Eric Tourigny, a lecturer in historical archaeology at Newcastle University, notes that public pet cemeteries have been around in Europe and North America since the late 19th century. Britain's first public pet cemetery appeared in London's Hyde Park in 1881, followed by Paris' ornate Cimetière des Chiens in 1899.

However, despite this long history, many people still struggle to find a way to grieve for their pets. In fact, some may even feel ashamed or embarrassed about expressing their emotions, as the stigma surrounding pet grief has historically been taboo.

Tourigny's research on historic gravestones and epitaphs suggests that our relationships with animals have evolved over time. In the 19th century, pets were often considered "loving friends" or "devoted companions." By the early 20th century, however, they had become members of the family, as evidenced by the appearance of family surnames on gravestones and loving epitaphs written by parents.

Today, we see a similar trend in the increasing acceptance of human-animal relationships as an integral part of our collective wellbeing. As society becomes more open to acknowledging the importance of these bonds, we are beginning to adopt rituals that resemble those used for mourning human loss.

The recent announcement by Barcelona's city council to invest in the establishment of a public pet cemetery is a significant step towards addressing this taboo. While the estimated cost of €200 per service may be out of reach for some, it highlights the growing demand for spaces where people can grieve and remember their pets in a meaningful way.

Online forums, digital pet cemeteries, and other alternatives offer additional options for those who cannot or choose not to visit a physical cemetery. Ultimately, these developments demonstrate that our emotional connections with animals are just as valid and deserving of recognition as those we have with humans.

As Tourigny writes, "By the early 20th century, pets had become members of the family – evidenced by the appearance of family surnames on the gravestones, and loving epitaphs written by ‘Mummy and Daddy.’" It's time to recognize that our relationships with animals are complex, multifaceted, and worthy of respect. By doing so, we can create spaces for healing, commemoration, and closure – not just for humans, but also for the beloved pets who have captured our hearts.

🐾💕 I think it's super cool that Barcelona is investing in a public pet cemetery! People should be able to grieve and remember their pets however they want, without feeling ashamed or embarrassed 🤷‍♀️. We need more spaces like this so people can celebrate the amazing bond between humans and animals 💗. I've seen so many online forums and digital pet cemeteries that are super peaceful and beautiful - it's a great way for people to pay their respects to their pets when they can't visit a physical one 🌼. And, honestly, I think it's awesome that we're starting to recognize the importance of our relationships with animals as just as valid as those with humans ❤️.

I think it's awesome that Barcelona is creating a public pet cemetery 🐾💕. It shows how people are finally accepting that their pets are more than just companions, they're part of the family too! I mean, we've always had cemeteries for humans, but now we're starting to see ones for our furry friends too. Online pet cemeteries and digital spaces are also a great idea, it's like having a virtual space to say goodbye and remember your pets 💻. The fact that people are still feeling ashamed or embarrassed about grieving is sad, but I think this trend is going to change that 🙏. It's time we recognize how much love and care we put into our pets, and give them the respect they deserve 🐾💗

I feel like we're finally getting there! People need to be able to grieve in peace, and a pet cemetery is such an amazing way to do that 💕🐾. It's crazy to think that it was once considered taboo to express your emotions over losing a pet... now we're all about celebrating those special bonds 🌈. The fact that Barcelona is investing in one of these cemeteries is awesome - more options for people who want to say goodbye in a meaningful way 🙏. And let's be real, digital pet cemeteries are a game-changer for those who can't or don't want to visit a physical one 😊. It's time we acknowledge the importance of our relationships with animals and create spaces that honor those feelings 💖.

I'm loving this trend of people finally being able to grieve properly for their furry friends 🐾💔. It's crazy that it took so long for us to acknowledge that losing a pet is a huge loss! 💥 I mean, think about it, pets are like our family members - they're there for us through thick and thin, and when they pass on, it's like we've lost a member of the fam 🤯. The fact that public pet cemeteries are popping up in cities all over Europe and North America is a major step forward 💪. And I'm not just talking about Barcelona's new public pet cemetery - online forums and digital pet cemeteries are already doing this thing, so it's awesome to see more cities catching on 🌎. It's time we start recognizing the importance of our emotional bonds with animals and create spaces for healing and commemoration 💫. Let's get rid of that shame and stigma surrounding pet grief and just be open about how much we love (and lose) our pets ❤️🐾

I think its about time we acknowledge that our pets r not just pets, they're part of our familes too 😔. Its been proven that people are struggling to cope with losing their furry friends & there isnt really a proper way 4 them 2 grieve. I mean, who doesnt want 2 create a special place 2 remember their pet & celebrate the time u had together? 🐾💕 The fact that there r still stigmas around pet grief is just ridiculous & its great 2 see people like Eric Tourigny doin research 2 help change that. We shd def be creatin spaces 4 humans 2 grieve & remember their pets, whether its a physical cemetery or somethin online 🤗💻

I FEEL LIKE WE'RE FINALLY STARTING TO BREAK DOWN THOSE STIGMAS SURROUNDING PET GRIEF!!! IT'S ABOUT TIME WE START TALKING ABOUT HOW MUCH PAIN LOSING A PET CAN CAUSE AND HOW HARD IT IS TO SAY GOODBYE! 🐾💔 I MEAN, THINK ABOUT ALL THE TIMES YOU'VE SEEN PEOPLE CRYING AT THE CEMETERY WHEN THEIR FUR BABY DIED - WE SHOULD BE TALKING ABOUT THAT INSTEAD OF MAKING IT SOME KIND OF TABOO TOPIC!!!

🌳💔 I think it's about time we acknowledge that pet loss is a real emotional experience. It's crazy to me how some people still feel like they're supposed to put on a brave face and not show their emotions 🙅‍♂️. But honestly, pets are part of our family, and losing them is just as painful as losing a human loved one 🐾💕

the idea of having a public pet cemetery is kinda old school lol 🤣 like isn't everyone on instagram already grieving over their pets with those adorable obituaries anyway? it's like we're already doing this in a way that's more lowkey and accessible to everyone. plus, €200 per service might be a bit steep for some peeps, but I guess it's about creating spaces for people to grieve and remember their pets in a meaningful way 🐾💔

ugh, this is gonna be a wild ride... 🤯 so, they're finally acknowledging that grieving over your pet isn't weird or embarrassing anymore? like, about time, right? i mean, it's not like people were hiding their feelings from the world or anything... 😂 but seriously, €200 per service for a public pet cemetery in barcelona? that's just ridiculous. who can afford that? and what's with the stigma surrounding pet grief in the first place? shouldn't we be more open to acknowledging the emotional bonds we have with our pets? 🤷‍♀️

🤔 I gotta say, I'm all about normalizing pet grief and giving people a space to grieve like they're losing a human fam member 👫. It's wild that we've only recently started talking about this, considering pets have been our "loving friends" since the 19th century 🐾❤️. The stigma around pet loss is still pretty strong, which is why it's awesome to see Barcelona investing in a public pet cemetery 🎉. And yeah, €200 might be a bit pricey for some, but I think it's worth it for people who need that closure and space to remember their pets 🌺. It's all about acknowledging the depth of our emotional bond with animals, you feel? 👍

THE CAPS LOCK CRUSADER HERE AND I THINK IT'S AMAZING THAT BARCELONA IS TAKING A STEP TOWARDS PROVIDING A PUBLIC PET CEMETERY FOR PEOPLE TO GRIEVE OVER THEIR LOST FURRY FRIENDS 🐶💔! IT'S TIME WE STARTED RECOGNIZING THE EMOTIONAL BOND WE HAVE WITH OUR ANIMALS AND GAVE THEM THE SAME RESPECT AND CELEBRATION AS WE DO WITH HUMANS. I MEAN, WHO DOESN'T WANT TO VISIT A BEAUTIFUL PARK OR MEMORIAL WHERE THEY CAN PAY THEIR RESPECTS TO THEIR LAD/ESS? IT'S NOT ABOUT BEING EMBARRASSED, IT'S ABOUT SHOWING LOVE AND APPRECIATION FOR THE IMPACT OUR PETS HAVE ON OUR LIVES 🌟

🤔 I think it's amazing how times are changing and people are finally realizing that their relationships with animals aren't any less significant than those with humans. I mean, come on, we're already acknowledging the importance of pet adoption and fostering relationships with them as if they were human family members... why not give them a proper sendoff too? 🐾💔 It's like, our pets are basically part of the family, so shouldn't we have a way to honor their memory in a meaningful way?

I love how research is showing that our attitudes towards animals have evolved over time, from just seeing them as companions to recognizing them as full-fledged members of the family. And now, with all these new options popping up for people to grieve and remember their pets, it's like we're finally catching up on being human! 🙏🐶 The fact that Barcelona is investing in a public pet cemetery is a huge step forward, but I'm also loving all the alternative options online. It's all about giving people what they need to heal and find closure.

We should really be recognizing these emotional connections with animals for what they are – valid, complex, and deserving of respect. And honestly, it's time we started treating our furry friends like the beloved family members they are! 🐾❤️

🤕 I'm so done with people trying to downplay their pet loss feelings. Like, what's wrong with being sad over a furry friend? It's only natural to grieve when we lose someone we care about, whether it's human or animal. And honestly, the stigma surrounding pet grief is still pretty strong - like, who says you can't mourn the loss of your dog in a public cemetery?! 🤦‍♀️

And another thing, €200 for a "service" at this new pet cemetery? It's already expensive enough to bury a human. What about those who can't afford it? That just feels like a bunch of rich people trying to cash in on the grieving process. And don't even get me started on online forums and digital cemeteries - that just seems like a lazy way out. Where's the personal touch? The closure? It all just feels so... impersonal 🤕.

I'm all for a public pet cemetery in Barcelona 🐾🌳, it's about time we acknowledge the bond between us and our furry friends is real 💕. I mean, think about it, we take care of them, love them, and lose them too... it's only natural to want to honor that connection with a proper goodbye ritual. The €200 price tag might be steep for some, but hey, life's expensive 🤑. What's interesting is how our attitudes towards pets have evolved over time - from "loving friends" in the 19th century to full-fledged family members by the early 20th century 👪. It just goes to show that our emotional connections with animals are complex and worthy of respect 💗. I'd love to see more public pet cemeteries pop up across Europe and beyond - it's a step towards normalizing our grief and creating spaces for healing 🌟

🤷‍♀️ I mean, it's about time someone acknowledged that people are actually feeling all those feels when they lose their fur babies 🐾😢. Like, €200 might be a bit steep for some, but hey, at least it's not just us cat ladies mourning in our pajamas and eating ice cream 🍦💤. The fact that it's becoming more normalized to grieve for pets is super progress 🌈, and I'm all for it! Who needs traditional cemeteries when you can have a digital pet cemetery with cute little tombstones? 😂 It's about time we started valuing our emotional connections with animals as much as we value those with humans 💕.
