Phillies add Don Mattingly as bench coach

Phillies Name Don Mattingly Bench Coach in Shakeup After Disappointing Postseason.

The Philadelphia Phillies are shaking up their coaching staff in a bid to revitalize the team's performance after one of its most lackluster postseasons on record. While manager Rob Thomson will remain at the helm, following an encouraging regular season that saw the team win 96 games, the coaching team is getting a much-needed boost with the arrival of baseball legend Don Mattingly as bench coach.

A Hall of Fame player in his own right, Mattingly brings a wealth of experience to the Phillies' staff after spending 11 seasons managing the Dodgers and Marlins. His postseason record was uninspiring, winning just eight games out of 29, but he has proven himself to be a shrewd assistant coach with a track record of success in Toronto.

The news comes as the Phillies are rumored to be on the cusp of signing one of the biggest free agents in baseball, Toronto's Bo Bichette. Mattingly's arrival is seen as another coup for the team's front office, who have made it clear that they are committed to building a competitive roster.

Thomson has long been a fan of Mattingly and has already expressed his enthusiasm for having him on board. "I think it'd be awesome," Thomson said. "I think it's a perfect fit for a ball club. Just his intelligence and presence and experience. It would be a really good fit." With Mattingly at the helm, the Phillies are looking to inject some much-needed stability and savvy into their coaching staff as they look to build on last season's progress.

omg can you even imagine dont mattingly on the philly bench 🤯 i mean we all thought he was done with baseball after that rough postseason run but nope he comes out of nowhere and gets handed a major role 🙌 its like the front office is saying "hey don we trust you to turn this team around" 🤑 and tbh i think thats exactly what they need mattingly brings that old school smarts that can help take our young core to the next level 💡 plus with bichette on board i gotta think we're gonna make some noise in the playoffs 🚀 fingers crossed for a real run this time around 🤞

I think it's so awesome that Don Mattingly is joining the Phillies' team! 🙌 I mean, have you seen his resume? The dude is a legend in baseball! 11 years managing the Dodgers and Marlins? That's like, super experienced coaching right there. And to think he was just an assistant coach with the Blue Jays, but now he's bench coach for one of the biggest teams in baseball? Mind blown, tbh. 💥 I love how Rob Thomson is so stoked about having him on board too, because it's clear this guy knows his stuff. Now, can we please get some consistency from our team and make a deep run in the playoffs? 🤞

[Drooling face] 🤤 Don't @ me, but I thought the Phillies were already a "winning" team with Rob Thomson at the helm 😏👮‍♂️ Mattingly is like the "special sauce" they need to take it to the next level 💡🔥 Now, let's get Bo Bichette signed and this team is gonna be FIRE 🔥💥 [Fist bump] 👊

😊 this is awesome news!!! don mattingly as bench coach can only help take the phillies to the next level 🚀 i love that thomson already knows him and thinks he's a great fit, it's like he knew what they needed all along 👍 and with bichette on board, this team is gonna be fire 🔥 can't wait to see them dominate in the playoffs 💪

🤔 I mean, it's about time the Phillies made a change, right? That postseason was pretty rough... 96 wins is nothing to sneeze at, but come on! You've gotta perform when it matters most. I'm not surprised they brought in Don Mattingly, though. He's got experience and smarts. I think Rob Thomson is wise to bring him on board. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out... especially with that big free agent signing... Bo Bichette? 🤞

I'm loving this move by the Phillies 🤩! Don Mattingly is like a breath of fresh air for that team. I mean, what's not to love about a Hall of Famer bringing his expertise to the bench? Thomson must've vouched for him, and now we're seeing the results. Eight wins out of 29 in the postseason ain't great, but Mattingly's got some tricks up his sleeve. And let's be real, signing Bo Bichette is a big deal 🤑. I'm hoping this new coaching staff will bring that Phillies team to the next level. I remember back in '87 when Mattingly played for the Yankees, he was always so classy on and off the field 💼. This guy's got some serious magic in him.

umm so like don mattingly is coming in as bench coach and im thinking maybe this is gonna be a good thing for the phillies?? i mean he has experience managing different teams and stuff, but his postseason record was kinda bad 🤔 what do you think would make him successful in that role? 🙃 also rob thomson said it's a "perfect fit" which sounds cool i guess but what does that even mean? is he just really excited about having mattingly around? 🤷‍♀️
