Pittsburgh Steelers line up Mike McCarthy as next head coach

The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to appoint Mike McCarthy as their new head coach, according to multiple reports. This move marks a significant change for the franchise, which has traditionally been associated with experienced and relatively untested coaches.

In contrast, McCarthy brings 18 years of head-coaching experience under his belt, having previously led the Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl title in 2011. His career record stands at 185-123-2, including playoff games. The Steelers' decision to hire him over other candidates may be attributed to their desire for stability and consistency.

McCarthy's profile is distinct from that of his predecessors, who were all relatively untested assistants when hired. This shift in approach could signal a change in the team's strategy, particularly given the current quarterback instability. With Pittsburgh having drafted consistently in the high teens or low 20s, securing a long-term answer at the position has proven difficult.

The Steelers' reliance on veteran quarterbacks is also reflected in their failure to identify Ben Roethlisberger's successor early and the unsuccessful gamble on first-round pick Kenny Pickett in 2022. If Aaron Rodgers, who won a Super Bowl under McCarthy in Green Bay, decides not to return for another season, Pittsburgh will face significant challenges at the quarterback position.

However, team president Art Rooney II has expressed his commitment to competing day one, suggesting that the Steelers intend to prioritize their on-field performance. With McCarthy's experience and background guiding them, the franchise is poised to embark on a new chapter in its history.

๐Ÿค” think mccarthy might be a good choice but i'm still salty about him not getting ben roethlisberger back ๐Ÿˆ that guy was a franchise icon & it feels like he just kinda... disappeared ๐Ÿ˜ as for mccarthy's experience, 18 yrs is a lot, but is he the right fit for pittsburgh tho? the steelers have had some weird QB situations in the past ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ remember kenny pickett? ๐Ÿ™ˆ i'm not gonna lie, i'm hyped to see how this all plays out though ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿค• The worst just happened! Another NFL quarterback crisis brews in Pittsburgh ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Ben Roethlisberger's successor fiasco still hasn't been resolved and now they're handing over the reins to an old coach like Mike McCarthy? ๐Ÿ™„ I mean, that's gonna take some getting used to for Steeler fans. Quarterback instability has plagued this team for years & now Art Rooney II is all about competing "day one" ๐Ÿ’ช? Time will tell if they've got what it takes this time around... probably not ๐Ÿ˜

just wondering if this change will help the steelers get out of that funk they've been stuck in for years ๐Ÿ˜•...the fact that art rooney ii is all about competing day one is defo something to watch...but 18 yrs of head coaching exp isnt gonna magically fix their QB issues ๐Ÿค”...think mccarthy's got his work cut out for him ๐Ÿ’ช

I gotta say ๐Ÿค”, the Steelers think they can just bring in some stability with Mike McCarthy? I'm not sure about this move... I mean, don't get me wrong, he's got experience and all that, but 18 years is a looong time to be stuck in one spot. The guy won a Super Bowl in Green Bay, but let's be real, it's been like 15 years since then. What makes the Steelers think they're gonna magically solve their quarterback problems with him? And what about when Aaron Rodgers decides not to come back? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ I'm keeping an eye on this one...

๐Ÿ˜Š I'm kinda curious about this move, Mike McCarthy's a well-experienced coach but the Steelers' QB situation has been sketchy for years... like remember when they drafted Kenny Pickett? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ Still haven't gotten it right, hope he can magically fix things now. What do you guys think about Art Rooney II's 'compete day one' stance? Feels a bit too optimistic given their recent QB struggles ๐Ÿ™„

dude, 18 years of coaching exp and a super bowl win under his belt? thats like the ultimate resume ๐Ÿคฉ. i think this move could be good for the steelers, they need stability at QB and mccarthy's got that covered ๐Ÿ‘. but, what about when aaron rodgers decides not to play another season tho? that would be huge ๐Ÿ’ฅ. still, art rooney's all in on day one so i guess we'll just have to wait and see how it plays out ๐Ÿค”

The Steelers think they're making a smart move by hiring an old-school coach like Mike McCarthy ๐Ÿค”. I mean, 18 years of head-coaching experience is a lot, especially compared to their previous guys who were basically thrown into the deep end as assistants. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out, especially with Ben Roethlisberger's future uncertain and Aaron Rodgers possibly leaving. The Steelers need stability at QB, and McCarthy's got that in spades... or so they hope ๐Ÿ˜…. Still, it's not like he hasn't faced challenges before - the Packers struggled on offense when he was there. We'll just have to wait and see how this all shakes out ๐Ÿ‘€

The question is can this stability be the answer for a team that's been stuck in neutral? ๐Ÿค” Pittsburgh needs to find a way to make Aaron Rodgers' situation work or they'll be looking at another draft pick in the teens ๐Ÿ“ˆ Not sure about McCarthy being the solution, but at least it's a change. Hope they can get their QB situation sorted out soon โฐ

I'm so down for this move ๐Ÿค”. 18 years of head coaching under his belt is basically ancient history, I mean who needs that much experience? The Steelers need some fresh blood to shake things up and McCarthy's gonna bring the chaos ๐Ÿ’ฅ. And let's be real, 185-123-2 isn't exactly a glowing record โ€“ I'd rather have someone with like, a .500 career or something ๐Ÿ˜‚. Plus, if Aaron Rodgers decides not to come back, they're already doomed ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. The Steelers' biggest problem is their inability to draft quarterbacks, so maybe McCarthy's gonna be the answer to all those years of quarterback instability ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Bring it on, I say!

So I'm thinking the Steelers' decision to go with McCarthy might be a bit of a 'bold gamble', kinda like how some politicians take risks by shaking things up ๐Ÿค”...I mean, can you imagine if they had stuck with the old formula and brought in some fresh blood? Maybe they'd have solved their quarterback issues by now! But I guess stability and consistency are what they're after, just like how a stable economy is crucial for any country's success. It'll be interesting to see how McCarthy brings his 'experienced' touch to Pittsburgh - fingers crossed he can fix that quarterback situation! ๐Ÿคž

Ugh, 18 years under one coach? That's crazy ๐Ÿคฏ! I get it, stability is key but can't they try some fresh blood too? It feels like they're stuck in a time warp... McCarthy's got an awesome record and all, but what about innovation? They're relying on experience but what if that means missing out on the next big thing? And QB instability? Yeah no thanks ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ... hope they can get it sorted ASAP!

omg i cant even imagine coach mccarthy taking over for the steelers ๐Ÿคฏ, like who wouldve thought theyd go with someone so experienced? i mean ben roethlisberger's successor drama is real tho, and if aaron rodgers leaves, itll be super tough for them to find another solid QB ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. but hey at least mccarthy has some actual wins under his belt, that's gotta count for something ๐Ÿ’ช. i wonder how he'll fit into the steelers' scheme though ๐Ÿค”, hopefully they can stabilize their quarterback situation now ๐Ÿ’•.

I think this is a bold move by the Steelers, but what if Ben Roethlisberger decides not to return for another season? ๐Ÿค” The team's struggles at QB are well-documented, and I'm not convinced that McCarthy's experience will magically fix everything. They need a solid young QB in place before they can think about competing with the big boys in the AFC...

omg can't believe they're putting mccarthy at helm ๐Ÿคฏ he's like a total opposite to what steelers need right now, i mean ben roethlisberger's successor needs to be more of a game changer not some old coach trying to recapture past glories ๐Ÿ˜’

๐Ÿค” I'm not sure if this is the right move for the Steelers, but hey, stability can be good right? I mean, they've had some decent years with Roethlisberger, so it's nice to have someone who knows what they're doing. But 18 years in one place? That's a lot of continuity... or is it just a whole lotta complacency ๐Ÿ˜’. Either way, fingers crossed they can get this QB situation figured out, 'cause that's always the tricky part for any team. Rodgers leaving would be a big blow, but I guess you never know what's gonna happen in the NFL...

I think this move by the Steelers is interesting, but I'm not sure if it's the best fit for them yet ๐Ÿค”. I mean, 18 years as a head coach is a lot, and while Mike McCarthy has done well with Green Bay, we don't know how he'll adapt to Pittsburgh's system or his players' personalities. And what about the QB situation? It's been a mess for years, so I'm not sure how much better this will make things ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. That being said, if they want stability and consistency, McCarthy might be their guy - he does have a proven track record after all ๐Ÿ‘. But let's see how it plays out before we start calling him the next legend ๐Ÿ’ช

I gotta say, hiring Mike McCarthy as head coach seems like a solid move for the Steelers ๐Ÿค”. I mean, 18 years of experience under his belt? That's some serious coaching cred ๐Ÿ’ฏ. The guy knows what he's doing and has a proven track record of success. The fact that they went with him over other candidates speaks to their desire for stability, which is music to my ears ๐ŸŽต.

The Steelers' QB situation is a hot mess, and if Aaron Rodgers decides not to return, they'll be in trouble ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. But with McCarthy at the helm, I think they've got a good shot at getting it together. The fact that Art Rooney II is committed to competing day one shows he's on board with this change ๐Ÿค.

It's gonna be interesting to see how this all plays out, but I'm feeling optimistic about the Steelers' chances ๐Ÿ”ฎ. They're taking a calculated risk, and if it pays off, they could be back in contention in no time โฐ!

ugh i dont think this matters tbh but i guess its interesting that mccarthy is joining the steelers... like what does it even mean for the team at this point? theyve been struggling with qbs and stability, so hopefully he can bring some consistency to the position ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿˆ

man this hiring makes sense i guess mcdonnough wants stability but how long can they keep ben roethlisberger out of the lineup? 16 games was the longest he played without starting as an injury, that's just not gonna cut it next season mcdonough needs a QB with some actual chemistry with mcCarthy
