'Plainly wrong': London flat dwellers fight shock £200,000 heating bill

The article discusses the issue of heat networks, which supply heat from a central source via a network of insulated pipes carrying hot water. The suppliers are usually the landlord or freeholder, who buys energy on the commercial market for residents. However, some customers have faced unfair price hikes and poor service, leading to disputes and complaints.

The Competition and Markets Authority had previously made the case for proper regulation of heat networks, and Ofgem has now taken charge of policing these networks. Ofgem's director of heat networks, Helena Charlton, says that many heat network customers already receive a good service, but too many people face unclear bills, poor communication or uncertainty about what to do when things go wrong.

Some new protections took effect in 2025, including the Energy Ombudsman starting to accept disputes relating to heat networks and a new advice service launched by Consumer Scotland and Citizens Advice in England and Wales. Stephen Knight, of Heat Trust, says that regulation is "long overdue" and that there is an increasing number of people on heat networks who need proper protection.

The article also mentions the case of Rendall & Rittner, a housing developer that was found to have retrospectively increased the price it charged its customers for heat services. The tribunal ruled that the money was "irrecoverable as service charges under the respective leases", and that 20% of Rendall & Rittner's fees for the 15-month period when the debt arose were disallowed.

The article concludes by highlighting the need for proper regulation of heat networks to ensure that customers can understand their bills, that prices are fair, and that they can rely on their heat supply.

🤔 I mean, it's about time someone took a look at these heat network suppliers. I'm all for innovation and stuff, but if you're gonna charge people for something as essential as heat, you gotta make sure they're not just taking advantage of 'em. These price hikes and poor service are just unacceptable. 💸🔥 The fact that it's taken the Ofgem to step in is a bit late, imo. I hope these new protections actually help people who are struggling. We need to make sure everyone knows what they're getting into when it comes to heat networks. 📝 It's not just about the Rendall & Rittner case, but about all the others who might be facing similar issues...

I'm totally fuming about this heat network situation 🤯. Like, I get it, there needs to be some sort of regulation in place, but come on! The fact that people have been paying these unfair price hikes and getting subpar service is just not right. And now, finally, Ofgem has stepped in, which is a step in the right direction 🙌.

I'm also loving the new protections that have been introduced, like the Energy Ombudsman accepting disputes and the advice service launched by Consumer Scotland and Citizens Advice. It's about time someone started listening to these customers and giving them some real support 😊.

The case of Rendall & Rittner is just another example of how heat networks can go horribly wrong if there isn't proper oversight. I mean, who gets retrospectively charged more for a service that was supposed to be included in the initial lease? It's just not fair 🙄.

Overall, I think this is a great step forward for heat network customers. We need more transparency and accountability in these systems, and I'm glad we're finally seeing some real change 🔥.

I feel so bad for those people who got ripped off with unfair price hikes & poor service 🤕🌡️... it's just not right! The fact that some customers are having to deal with unclear bills & uncertainty about what to do when things go wrong is just unacceptable 😩. I think it's awesome that Ofgem is taking charge now & introducing new protections like the Energy Ombudsman & a new advice service 🙌... hope it helps people get some answers & get their heat bills sorted out 💪. Poor Rendall & Rittner got a pretty nasty fine too, 20% of those fees were disallowed! That's not cool 😒. Can't wait to see how things improve for everyone on heat networks 👍.

🤔 I think it's a no-brainer - we need more transparency and accountability when it comes to heat networks! It's crazy that some customers have been left in the dark about their bills and how things work. 📊 The new protections introduced are a step in the right direction, but we still need to see more action taken by the regulator. I'd love to see clearer guidelines on what customers can expect from their heat network suppliers - it's not rocket science, right? 🚀 And what about those who've been ripped off like Rendall & Rittner? That's just unfair! 💸 We need to make sure that everyone's treated fairly and that heat networks are working for the benefit of all customers, not just a select few. 👍

Ugh I'm so sick of these unfair price hikes on heat networks 🤯! It's like the suppliers just take advantage of people who don't know any better. I've heard of some landlords charging way too much for what is basically a public service 🤑. And the communication? Forget about it, it's always unclear or they just ignore you. I'm so glad that Ofgem is stepping in now to regulate these things and protect consumers 😊. It's long overdue! The new protections are a great start, like having an Energy Ombudsman to help resolve disputes. And Rendall & Rittner got slammed for their ridiculous price hike 🤦‍♂️. We need proper regulation so everyone can rely on their heat supply and not get taken advantage of 💡.

🔥 I'm so fed up with these unfair price hikes and poor service from heat network suppliers. It's not like we're asking for the moon here, just a decent standard of care and transparency in our bills. 🤯 And now that Ofgem is on the case, let's hope they don't just sit back and collect their fees without making some real changes. I mean, what's the point of having an Energy Ombudsman if no one's actually using it? We need more action than just promises of "regulation" – we need concrete steps to protect consumers like us from exploitation! 📊

I'm low-key shocked at how many people are getting ripped off by these heat network suppliers 🤯. I've got a mate who lives in one of those flats and they got a massive bill last year without any explanation - no idea what he'd done wrong or why his price had increased so drastically. And it's not like he's complaining, just frustrated. The new protections are definitely needed, but it's crazy that it took Ofgem to step in 🙄. Rendall & Rittner got roasted by the tribunal and they should be an example for others... not because they're afraid of getting called out, but because they actually got penalized 💸. Heat networks need proper regulation ASAP or people are gonna keep getting taken advantage of 👎

Ugh, this is crazy 🤯! I've lived in a flat with a heat network before and it was such a hassle when the price went up unexpectedly. I remember thinking like "okay, what did I even do to deserve this?" 😩 I'm so glad there are some new protections in place now, though. Like, I hope those Energy Ombudsman people can actually help sort out some of these disputes and get some clarity on prices 🤞. And it's just weird that companies like Rendall & Rittner thought they could just go back and change the rates without notice 😳. I mean, what even is that? It's not right 💔. Anyway, I hope Ofgem can do its job and make sure customers have a fair deal on their heat services 💪.

Man, this heat network thing is like a perfect example of how some people in power just want to cash in without checking if it's right or not 🤑. I mean, think about it, these landlords and freeholders are buying energy on the commercial market and then selling it back to their tenants at a markup - that's like price gouging, fam! 💸 And now they're trying to pass the blame on Ofgem for regulating this? Come on! 🙄

It's all about accountability, you know? These heat network customers are just trying to live in warm homes, but they can't even trust their landlords and freeholders not to rip them off. That's why we need more oversight and regulation, like the new advice service that's been launched. It's a step in the right direction, but it should've happened sooner ⏱️.

And let's talk about Rendall & Rittner - that housing developer thought they could just increase prices on their customers without consequences? Not on my watch! 💪 The tribunal ruling was spot on, by the way. It shows us that some people in power still don't get it - fairness and transparency are not optional 📚.

It's time for real change, folks. We need to make sure that heat network customers can trust their service providers and pay fair prices without being taken advantage of 😊.

Heat network suppliers gotta step up their game 🚨. Unfair price hikes & poor service ain't cool 😒. Need better protection 4 those on the grid 💡. Regs are in place now, let's hope they stick 🤞. Consumers deserve clear bills & reliable heat 🏠💕.

I'm so done with my landlord right now 🤯! I was getting a nice warm bill one month, but then suddenly it went up like 20% 😱! They just said it was because of "commercial fluctuations" but didn't even explain what that means 🙄. I ended up having to deal with the ombudsman and it was such a stress fest 💔. I'm so glad they're finally taking action though, I mean who wants to have to fight for their basic human right to heat? 😂 It's crazy how some people just exploit their customers like that.

I was so mad readin this about heat networks 🤯! Like who expects their landlord to just raise their bills willy nilly? It's not cool when companies play fast & loose w/ customer service. Ofgem's doin the right thing by takin charge, but we need more than just a few new rules to fix this mess. More info for customers online would be huge 📊👍

I feel bad for these people who got caught up in all this heat network drama 🤔. I mean, it's not like some landlords are trying to rip off their tenants or anything 😒. Sure, there were some shady companies out there (looking at you, Rendall & Rittner) but let's not forget that most of these heat networks are actually pretty cool and do a great job ⚡️. I think we need more understanding and less finger-pointing here 🤝. We should be focusing on how to make these systems better for everyone, not just blaming the suppliers 🙄. And hey, it's good that Ofgem is stepping in to help regulate things now 💪. Let's get behind our heat networks and support them, rather than tearing each other down 😊.

just heard about this heat network thingy... i think its kinda cool that theres new protections in place now 🌞🔥 like the energy ombudsman accepting disputes & a new advice service from consumer scotland & citizens advice... it shows people are finally taking heat networks seriously 😊 and with ofgem on the case, hopefully customers will start getting the fair prices they deserve 💸 i mean, who wants to get stuck with unclear bills or poor communication? not me! 🙅‍♂️ but seriously, its great that theres a move towards regulation... maybe it'll lead to better services & more transparency in the whole heat network thing 🤞

omg I'm so done with these heat network companies 🤯 like who thought it was okay to just increase prices willy nilly without telling people?!? 😡 I know some of them do a good job but it's all about the ones that don't, you feel? and now they're introducing new protections but like why should we have to fight for our rights in the first place? 🤷‍♀️ my friend's neighbor was one of those customers who got hit with a price hike and she was totally stressed out, poor thing 😓

Ugh 🤕 just read about how some people on heat networks are getting ripped off big time... like that one housing developer Rendall & Rittner who retrospectively increased the price it charged its customers by like 20% 💸 it's just so unfair. And it's not just them, I've seen so many stories of people being left in the dark about their heat bills and not knowing what to do when things go wrong 😩. I'm all for regulations, but it feels like it took a long time for this to happen... Ofgem is finally stepping up and trying to help, but it's still gonna be a while before everything gets sorted out ⏰💦

Ugh, these heat network suppliers are always getting it in with people... I mean, who expects a price hike and no notice? It's like they're just taking advantage of folks who don't know any better 🤯. And the fact that Ofgem is finally stepping in to regulate them is about bloody time. I'm glad they've got some new protections in place for people, like the Energy Ombudsman and those advice services. It's a shame it had to come to this, but at least something's being done about it 💡. Now let's hope it doesn't all fall apart...

I'm really frustrated about these heat network issues 🤯. I mean, who wants to pay more money than expected just because some landlord or freeholder is trying to make a quick buck? It's not right, you know? The fact that Ofgem is now taking charge and introducing new protections like the Energy Ombudsman and a new advice service is a good step in the right direction 🙌. But it's also surprising that it took them so long to take action... I think we need to see more regulation on these heat networks, especially for people who are already struggling with their bills 💸. It's not just about fairness, it's about people being able to trust that they'll get the service they're paying for 😒.
