QUIZ: Manchester United's post‑Sir Alex Ferguson managerial saga - how much do you remember of turbulent last 13 years?

Manchester United has undergone a managerial merry-go-round since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement, but so far, none of them have been able to bring back the glory days at Old Trafford.

Over the last 13 years, Michael Carrick is set to return to the club as an interim manager - it's hard not to wonder how much you really remember about this tumultuous period in United's history. Six permanent managers and four interim appointments later, and the answer remains a resounding "not enough" for many fans.

For those who were around during this time, it's likely they recall David Moyes' ill-fated tenure, followed by Louis van Gaal's Dutch revolution that fell short of expectations. Then came Jose Mourinho, who initially brought much-needed stability but ultimately couldn't prevent United from being dumped out of the Champions League in a shock defeat at Basel.

Following Mourinho's departure was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, whose temporary appointment turned into a full-time job and yielded impressive results, including back-to-back FA Cups. However, his failure to secure top-four finishes has left him out of favour with fans and the board.

In recent times, Ralf Rangnick briefly took the reins before being replaced by Erik ten Hag, who is still trying to build a team capable of challenging for major honours.

So, how much do you really remember from this 13-year saga? Do any of United's managers stand out in your mind as having done more harm than good, or perhaps offered glimmers of hope that never quite materialised? It's time to take a step back and reflect on the state of Manchester United - where are they now, and what does their future hold?

Man... I remember when Fergie was still around, you know? We were like, the biggest club in England. Then he retired and it all fell apart 🤦‍♂️. I mean, I was rooting for Carrick to come back and try something different. He was a good manager, but I'm not sure if he's the right man for the job this time around.

I hated Moyes, tbh 😡. He just couldn't get it together. And Van Gaal... what was that all about? 🤔 I mean, we invested so much in him and he still didn't deliver. Mourinho was a bit of a disaster, but at least he brought some stability for a while.

Solskjaer was alright, I guess 😐. He did do well in the FA Cups, but top-four finishes? Forget about it 🙄. And Rangnick... what's his story? 🤔 I remember he came and went, didn't really make a difference. Erik ten Hag is still trying to build something, so we'll see how that goes.

You know, I miss the Fergie days 😢. United just wasn't the same after he left. It's hard to believe it's been 13 years...

omg i feel so sorry for united fans lol like 13 yrs is a long time and they've had some tough times 🤕 ralf rangnick wasnt even in the game that long and he got sacked already 😂 but seriosly tho david moyes and louis van gaal both had their moments but didnt quite deliver as expected. i think ole solskjaer was a breath of fresh air when he first took over and then he just kinda... stopped doing his job 🤔 he shouldve been more consistent with his team selection and tactics. ten hag is still trying tho and im curious to see how he'll do, hopefully he can turn things around for the red devils 😊

omg i remember it all too well lol like david moyes was literally the biggest disappointment ever he got smashed 6-1 by oldham at home what was he thinking?! 🤣👎 but i do have to give a shoutout to ole solskjaer he brought that FA cup trophy back and gave us some real hope for the future, even if he didn't quite live up to expectations later on. as for ralf rangnick, idk man he just seemed like a total outsider who got in over his head. ten hag's still got time i reckon though, he needs to build those squad dynamics first and get united playing that stylish football we all fell in love with under ferguson 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿💚

I'm like super skeptical about this whole interim manager thing... I mean, it's just so last minute. Can't they see that continuity is key here? Michael Carrick comes in, no doubt a nice guy, but what makes him think he can turn the ship around after 13 years of mess? It's gonna take more than just throwing some old players together and expecting results to come magically. And don't even get me started on how much I've forgotten about all this drama... I was too busy trying to figure out how to use my new iPhone to keep up with United's managerial merry-go-round 🤯

I gotta say, 13 years is a looong time, especially in football. I was still playing with my kids when Moyes came in 😂. For me, it's hard to pinpoint who did the most harm, but Rangnick's stint didn't sit right – felt like they were trying to make up for everything too quickly 🤔. As for hope, Solskjaer was a breath of fresh air when he took over, got the team playing nicely again 👍. But yeah, that FA Cup win didn't last long enough... Ten Hag's still got this to prove – time will tell if they can turn it around 💪

I'm still trying to wrap my head around all those manager changes. I mean, it's like they're trying out different coaches at school to find the right one for the team. But honestly, it feels like a lot of drama and not enough winning. David Moyes was the first one who came to mind - he just seemed so... nervous? Like he was waiting for someone to tell him what to do. And then there was Van Gaal, who I think had some good ideas but just couldn't execute them.

As for Rangnick, he was like the coach's coach - trying to fix everyone else instead of being the one in charge. And Erik ten Hag... well, I'm still not sure what to make of him yet. He's got some great players at his disposal, but it feels like they're not quite gelling as a team.

You know, I think the real question is what would Sir Alex Ferguson do if he were in their shoes? That guy was a genius when it came to building a winning team. Maybe Manchester United should just take a page out of his book and focus on finding someone who can lead them to success for more than just one season 😐

I remember David Moyes being a disaster 🙅‍♂️. He was so over-the-hill by then... I think he was like 50 or something? Anyway, his tactics were all wrong, he got us beat at our own game, and it was just one big mess from start to finish. On the other hand, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did some okay things, won some cups, but those FA Cups were more about him than the team, you know? And Ralf Rangnick... I don't think anyone really knew what he wanted to do or how to go about it 🤔. But you're right, Erik ten Hag still has a chance to turn it around... does he have the squad and the brains for it though? 😬

man this is crazy how much drama has gone down at united since ferguson retired 🤯🏴‍☠️ i was there for most of it and honestly some of these managers have been a total disaster david moyes was a joke lol and van gaal's revolution was more like a revolution in failure 😂 then you had mourinho who brought stability but couldn't even keep them in the champs league at home 🤦‍♂️ ole solskjaer did alright for himself getting two fa cups but failed to secure top four spots and now it's ten hag trying to build something from scratch 💪 i'm just hoping they can get it together soon, united needs a bit of stability back at old Trafford 🏠

I'm not buying it. They're stuck in a rut and it's only a matter of time before things completely fall apart at Old Trafford. I mean, 13 years is a looong time to be struggling like this and all these managers come and go... what does any of them really know about the club? Carrick's probably just trying to fill some gap 'cause nobody else wants the job. And don't even get me started on Ten Hag... he's got the money, but can he deliver? Doubt it. The whole thing just feels like a bunch of smoke and mirrors to me 🤔

omg I'm still trying to wrap my head around this... like what's going on with Man U?! 🤯 i mean I remember when Fergie retired and everyone thought it was gonna be a smooth transition but nope! every manager after that has been, like, super struggling 😩 david moyes was so awkward and then van gaal came in and tried to do some fancy tactics but they just didn't work 🤔 jose mourinho was a big deal at first but then they got humiliated by basel and it was all downhill from there 🌴

i'm really not sure what's gonna happen next with Erik ten Hag, though... he seems cool 😎 and his results are okay so far but can he build a winning team?! 🔥

lol, 13 years is like, forever for any football team lolol. okay so I was still alive then 🤣. seriously though, it's crazy how much drama went down at Old Trafford during that time. I think one guy who definitely did more harm than good is David Moyes. dude was everywhere and nowhere at the same time... like, what were they even trying to do? 🤷‍♂️

on the other hand, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's appointment was a whole different story 🙌. I mean, who doesn't love a good FA Cup win, right? 👏 but yeah, failing to get top-four finishes is a big bummer. and ralf rangnick... well, what can you say about that guy 😂. short-lived stint, if you ask me.

as for ten hag, I'm still trying to figure him out 🤔. he's got some great players on the squad but they just haven't clicked yet, you know? maybe it's just a case of needing time to gel 🕰️. either way, I'm intrigued to see what he does next 👀.

idk about these managers lol... it feels like they've been trying out different coaches like they're trying out jerseys 🤣 david moyes was a big miss imo, and jose mourinho's exit was a huge turning point for the team - he brought some stability but ultimately couldn't keep them in the champions league. as for ole solskjaer, i think he did some good things but his inability to get us into the top 4 consistently is a major concern 🤔 ralf rangnick seemed promising at first but didn't really deliver, and erik ten Hag's still finding his footing - fingers crossed he can turn it around though!

I remember this era like I remember my own grandma telling me to stop eating all her cookies 🍪. I mean, who needs that much drama? David Moyes was just a poor man's Fergie ( minus the trophy cabinet, obvs), van Gaal tried to be all fancy and ended up with a team that looked like they just got lost on the way to Old Trafford, and Mourinho... well, let's just say his exit was like a good wine – it left everyone feeling a bit bitter 😒. On the other hand, Solskjaer had some nice moments, but it's hard to forget the awkward FA Cup final win against Leicester 🤦‍♂️. And now we're stuck with Ten Hag trying to find his footing... here's hoping he doesn't get lost in the process 🗺️. All in all, I'm just waiting for someone to come along and say "oh no, we forgot how good we used to be"... 🙃

I'm not sure if this is just another case of a club trying to recapture the past rather than forging its own path 🤔. I mean, 13 years is a long time to be stuck in limbo like that. It's hard to remember all the ups and downs (mostly downs) but one manager who did stick out in my mind was Louis van Gaal - he was just so...particular about everything! 😂 Like, who needs that much detail in the game? And what happened to that excitement when Solskjaer came in? He got us to the FA Cup final twice and we didn't even win it 🤷‍♂️. The point is, I think United's biggest problem isn't the manager, it's how they manage their expectations (sorry, had to 😅). Can't wait to see what Erik ten Hag brings to the table though...

🤔 I'm low-key surprised no one from that era has taken over yet... I mean, it's not like United's had a straight shot at the title since Fergie retired 😅. Carrick might be a good choice tho, he was always in the know back then 🙏. Don't get me wrong, every manager's had their ups and downs, but you gotta wonder what coulda been if they'd just stuck with one guy for a bit longer ⏱️. Mourinho was the first to show some promise after Fergie left, but ultimately fell short in the CL 🚫. And now it feels like United's stuck in a rebuild mode again 🔧... hope Erik can turn it around tho 💪

I feel like I've been living in a parallel universe, watching this managerial merry-go-round spin out of control 🤯. I mean, who could forget David Moyes' "fumblin' and stumblin'" era 😂? And then Louis van Gaal's ' experimental phase'... was that even a real thing? 🤔

But you know who does stand out in my mind - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer! He brought some much-needed excitement to the team, and those FA Cups were a highlight of an otherwise dull spell ⚽️. And as for Erik ten Hag... I'm still trying to wrap my head around his tactics 🤯. Love him or hate him, at least he's trying something new!

What really worries me is that no one seems to know what they're doing anymore 😩. The fans are getting restless, and the board's all over the place. Can someone please just sort out this squad and get United back on track? 🚀

I'm still trying to wrap my head around how much this club has changed since Fergie retired 🤯. I mean, who would've thought that after Ole's success with the FA Cups, he'd be out of favor with fans and the board? It just doesn't sit right with me. And what about Rangnick? Like, I get it, the German thing was interesting, but was it really worth replacing ten Hag mid-season? 🤔

For me, though, the real mystery is how much the players have changed - or not changed - since Fergie left. Are they still the same ones who could conquer Europe? Or did they grow up, get better, and now can't live up to expectations? 🏆 I mean, I remember when Ronaldo was there... wow, what a player! But now, it's like the team just can't seem to find that magic. Does anyone out there know what's going on with this squad? 😊

omg i feel u guys its been such a rollercoaster ride for man utd over the years 😩 ralf rangnick was like a breath of fresh air but sadly he didnt last long enough to really make an impact 🤕 ten Hag is still trying but it feels like they're not quite there yet 👀 as for managers who did more harm than good david moyes and jose mourinho are definitely 2 that come to mind lol their tenures were so tumultuous 😂 but overall i think its hard to say what the future holds for man utd will they find that special spark again? only time will tell 🤞
