Residents voice frustrations with Chicago police interactions during immigration raids: 'Who protects us?'

Chicago residents are speaking out against the city's police interactions with federal agents during immigration raids, saying it leaves them feeling unprotected.

The Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability held a meeting at Thalia Hall in Pilsen where nearly two dozen speakers voiced their frustrations about how Chicago police have been coordinating with federal law enforcement in recent months.

Many expressed anger over the length of time it took to address this issue, which was sparked by police district councilors who gathered 2,000 signatures to force a meeting through an ordinance despite asking for one in November.

Residents called for the arrest of agents who violate local laws and for the suspension of officers who cooperate with them. They also demanded that CPD brass attend CCPSA meetings to ensure accountability.

The issue started after President Donald Trump ramped up immigration enforcement in Chicago, leading to numerous incidents where police interacted with federal agents. Last month, an officer's response to a call from a Department of Homeland Security official was criticized for its lack of crowd control.

In October, a commander told officers to hold back during a shooting involving a federal agent, which left the shooter accused of boxing in a car driven by the feds. However, federal prosecutors later dismissed the case against her.

Ten days after that incident, Chicago officers were tear-gassed along with protesters while securing another scene.

The lack of action from the City Council also frustrated some speakers who spoke out about their experiences with police interactions. They called on the Commission for Public Safety and Accountability to hold all law enforcement accountable.

๐Ÿค” why did it take so long for them to address this issue? 2k signatures gathering by councilors is crazy, shouldnt that have been enough to get some action? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ also what's going on with these police interactions during immigration raids? seems really scary for residents. and what about the protesters who got tear-gassed? shouldn't they be prioritized over the agents who are causing tension? ๐Ÿš”๐Ÿ˜’

I just got back from this amazing hike in Indiana Dunes National Park ๐Ÿž๏ธ, and I was thinking, have you guys ever tried hiking during a full moon? It's like the whole forest is glowing with an ethereal light! Anyway, back to Chicago... I feel so sorry for these residents who are going through this. I mean, can you blame them for wanting more transparency in their police department? But then again, have you seen that new Netflix show "Stranger Things"? That Demogorgon is just the most terrifying monster ever ๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ... and it got me thinking, what if our police officers were like those scientists trying to take down monsters with science? Would we be safer?

This is a huge concern in Chicago, ppl are feelin really scared & unprotected when they interact with both CPD & federal agents ๐Ÿค•. It's crazy that it took 2k signatures for ppl to get a meeting about this issue, I mean, what's next? Just 'cause some councilors got fed up, now ppl r makin demands ๐Ÿšจ. Suspension of officers who cooperate w/ feds, arrestin' agents who violate local laws... these aren't crazy requests, they're basic human rights ๐Ÿ’ฏ. The CPD brass needs to be held accountable too, attend those CCPSA meetings like their job is on the line ๐Ÿ”ฅ. It's not just about immigration enforcement, it's about buildin trust between law enforcement & the community ๐Ÿ‘Š.

man, this is getting ugly in Chicago ๐Ÿค•... I feel like they're trying to address it, but nobody's hearing them loud enough ๐Ÿ˜”. The community is scared, and that's what matters most - their safety and trust in the police department. We need some real action here, like those who signed that petition - 2k signatures ain't nothing if we ain't seeing change ๐Ÿ™„. CPD needs to be held accountable, and so do those agents who are violating local laws... it's time for some transparency and accountability ๐Ÿ“. I'm all for the protesters' voices being heard too, they're not crazy, they're just mad because their lives have been affected by this ๐Ÿ‘Š. Can we please get a handle on this before someone gets hurt? ๐Ÿ’”

omg u gotta be kidding me!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ they're only just now talking about this? like, trump's been doing this for ages ๐Ÿคฏ i remember when obama was president and there were already reports of police cracking down on immigrants... what took the city so long to do something about it?! ๐Ÿ’” these residents are literally being held hostage by the federal government and no one is doing anything ๐Ÿšซ meanwhile, we're still living in a world where ppl can get tear-gassed just for protesting ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ and cops are basically being let off scot-free when they mess up... it's like, accountability 101 ๐Ÿ“š where's the CCPSA when u need 'em?! ๐Ÿ˜ก

I'M SO FRUSTRATED WITH WHAT'S GOING ON IN CHICAGO RIGHT NOW!!! PEOPLE ARE FEELING UNPROTECTED AND IT'S NOT OKAY. WE NEED TO HOLD OUR POLICE OFFICERS ACCOUNTABLE FOR FOLLOWING THE LAW AND RESPECTING OUR COMMUNITY. IT'S BEEN TOO LONG SINCE THIS ISSUE STARTED AND NOW WE'RE SEEING PEOPLE GET TEAR-GASSED JUST BECAUSE THEY WERE PROTESTING. WE NEED TO DEMAND THAT OUR CPD BRASS IS ATTENDING THESE MEETINGS SO WE CAN MAKE SURE THEY KNOW WE'RE WATCHING THEM. IT'S TIME FOR SOME REAL CHANGE IN THIS CITY!!!
