Ryan Coogler's Sinners has administered an almighty smackdown to critical favourites One Battle and Hamnet

Ryan Coogler's 'Sinners' Delivers Crushing Blow to Oscar Favourites, Leaving Industry Reeling

A seismic shift in the awards season landscape has occurred with Ryan Coogler's vampire drama thriller Sinners taking a colossal swipe at critical favourites One Battle After Another and Chloé Zhao's Hamnet. The film, which explores themes of racism, music, and the black experience, has emerged as the frontrunner with an astonishing 16 nominations – the most for any film in over 97 years.

While industry insiders had anticipated a landslide victory for more conventional Oscar contenders like Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another and Zhao's Hamnet, Coogler's Sinners has defied expectations and sent shockwaves throughout Tinseltown. Despite snubs to some notable performances, including those of Paul Mescal in One Battle After Another and Chase Infiniti in the same film, Sinners has proven to be the dark horse of the season.

At its core, Sinners is a wildly ambitious film that challenges conventional norms and subverts expectations. By riffs on the notion that blues music is inherently tied to the experiences of its creators, Coogler's work offers a searing critique of systemic racism and white privilege. As one character astutely observes, "White folks like the blues just fine, just not the people who make it."

While Coogler may not be the filmmaker's favourite – he expressed preference for his previous works such as Black Panther, Creed, and Fruitvale Station – Sinners' bold creative choices have undoubtedly set it apart from its peers. The film's unapologetic genre-bending and fearless exploration of complex themes have endeared it to audiences and critics alike.

As the Academy Awards approach, one question remains: can Sinners continue its winning streak? Anderson's One Battle After Another is still in contention for several nods, including Best Picture and Director, but Coogler's film appears poised to reign supreme. With Michael B Jordan's outstanding performance as the lead, Sinners fans will be eagerly awaiting the Oscars ceremony to see if their favourite film will bring home the top prize.

In a season marked by some of the most polarizing films in recent memory, Sinners has emerged as a beacon of originality and daring storytelling. Its unexpected victory serves as a testament to Coogler's skill as a filmmaker and his ability to craft a cinematic experience that is both thought-provoking and electrifying.

OMG 🤯 like I was saying in the last thread about awards season, Ryan Coogler is always on point with his storytelling... and Sinners is just proof of that 💥 The way he explores racism, music, and the black experience in this film is so raw and honest it's giving me all the feels 🙌 And that Michael B Jordan performance? 🔥 He's always a favorite of mine, but even if I wasn't a fan I'd be rooting for him to win... anyway back to Sinners - I think what's crazy about this film is how it's not afraid to subvert expectations and challenge norms. Like, who expects a vampire drama thriller from Coogler? 🤷‍♂️ Not me, that's for sure! Anyway, fingers crossed Sinners brings home those Oscar wins...

idk man, like, i'm really surprised sinners took the lead 🤯 but at the same time, can we say coogler didn't deserve it? he's always been kinda underrated in my opinion... and what's up with one battle after another being snubbed? paul mescal's performance was on point 💯... or maybe i'm just getting caught up in the hype 🤔 either way, sinners is def a dark horse, but can they keep it going until the oscars? 😬

I'm not buying it 🙅‍♂️, you know? All this hype around Sinners seems like just another case of Hollywood trying to create buzz with a "diversity hire" director (no offense to Ryan Coogler). I mean, 16 nominations is crazy, but what does that really say about the film's quality? Is it just because it's got all the right checkboxes – black lead, themes of racism and social justice?

And don't even get me started on how convenient it is for Sinners to win over the Oscars crowd. Chloé Zhao's Hamnet was actually pretty good too (IMO), but did anyone give it a fair shot? Meanwhile, Coogler's Sinners has all these weird genre choices that might not translate well to the screen.

I'm still holding out on giving this film my full endorsement. We'll just have to wait and see if Sinners can back up its Oscar hype 🤔

🤔 The thing about Ryan Coogler's Sinners is, it's not just a vampire drama thriller, it's a cultural commentary on racism, music, and the black experience. I mean, think about it, the film riffs on how white people co-opt black culture, like blues music, without truly understanding its significance. It's like they're saying, "Oh, we like the blues, but only if it's not made by black people." 🎸

And that's what makes Sinners so bold and daring as a film. Coogler isn't afraid to challenge conventional norms and expectations. He's got Michael B Jordan delivering an outstanding performance, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. The fact that Sinners has 16 nominations is crazy, considering some of the other films in contention.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole situation. One Battle After Another and Hamnet both had it coming, but Coogler's Sinners just went and took the cake. Can it keep its momentum? I guess only time will tell, but for now, let's just say that Sinners is the dark horse of the season 😎

omg i just saw sinners last week and it was SO good!! 🤩 i didn't know much about the film before watching it but now i'm totally obsessed with michael b jordan's character 🙌 what's up with the award season though? why do we need to have so many categories lol?? 🤔 i mean don't get me wrong, sinners is def a masterpiece and all, but isn't one battle after another supposed to be really good too? 🤷‍♀️ i'm still trying to figure out what it's about...

I'm loving how Sinners just totally flipped the script on everyone expected! I mean, who saw Ryan Coogler's vampire drama thriller taking down all those Oscar faves? It's like he took every criticism of him being a "safe" choice (which, let's be real, some people did) and turned it into fuel for his masterpiece. The way he explores racism, music, and the black experience is so raw and unapologetic – I'm here for it! 🤩

And can we talk about how bold Coogler was with this film? I mean, who else would dare to make a vampire movie that's also a commentary on systemic racism and white privilege? It's like he took all the genre-bending risks and came out on top. And let's not forget that Michael B Jordan's performance is giving me ALL THE FEELS 🙌

Anyway, can Sinners actually pull off that Oscar sweep? I'm keeping my fingers crossed for him! 😅

omg i'm lowkey obsessed with sinners 🤯 it's like ryan coogler went all out and made this entire film just for the oscars lol but seriously though, 16 nominations is wild and i think it's about time someone shook up the industry with a movie that tackles real issues like racism and systemic oppression 🙌 michael b jordan's performance is giving me LIFE 💥

omg i cant believe sinners took down all the other oscars faves!! ryan coogler is like a genius or something, how did he do it?? 😲 the way he challenged traditional norms and explored systemic racism and white privilege in blues music is so thought-provoking. michael b jordans performance as the lead is insane too! i mean one battle after another was def a strong contender but sinners just blew it out of the water 🤯 i'm hyped for the oscars now, sinners is gonna take home all the prizes and i couldn't be happier 😁

🤔 I gotta say, this is wild... like, who saw Sinners gonna take down all the other big contenders? 🚨 It's crazy how Ryan Coogler's film has managed to tap into the zeitgeist like this. The way it explores themes of racism and identity through music is so on point 💡. I'm not surprised he's getting some flak from industry folks, but at the end of the day, it's his vision that's resonating with people 🎥. One thing's for sure, this film is gonna make a statement at the Oscars... fingers crossed for Michael B Jordan's performance! 👏

I'm loving the whole Oscar drama this year 🤯! Ryan Coogler's Sinners is totally slaying the game right now 💥. I mean, who saw that coming? It's like he took all the dark horses in the competition and made them look like, well, dark horses 🐎. The way he tackles racism and white privilege through music is so thought-provoking and necessary ⚖️. And let's be real, Michael B Jordan's performance as lead is giving me LIFE 💪! I'm rooting for Sinners all the way, but at the same time, it's gonna be interesting to see how One Battle After Another holds up 🤔. Either way, this is shaping up to be an Oscar season for the ages 🔥!

🤯 OMG you guys I'm literally shook! I didn't see Sinners coming for the Oscars 🎥 it's like Ryan Coogler just came out of nowhere and stole the show 😎 I mean, I knew he was talented but wow! 16 nominations is crazy 🤯 anyone else thinking this might be a dark horse winner? 🐕 Paul Thomas Anderson's film got snubbed for some notable performances 🤔 and now Coogler's Sinners is in the lead... it just goes to show that originality and daring storytelling can pay off big time 💪 I'm low-key rooting for Michael B Jordan's performance as the lead, he totally deserves an Oscar 🏆 fingers crossed for a historical win!

🤯 I mean, can you even imagine being the one who predicted this?! 😂 It just goes to show that you gotta expect the unexpected in life & film, right? 🎥 I think we can all relate to feeling like Sinners took a dark horse shot at the Oscars - it's like when you're low-key rooting for an underdog candidate in your favorite competition and BAM! They win! 💪 What does this teach us tho? That sometimes the ones who seem the most unlikely or unpopular can end up being the real game-changers. We should keep our hearts & minds open to new ideas & perspectives, 'cause you never know what's gonna come out of it 🤔

I'm beyond excited for Ryan Coogler!!! This film is like nothin' else out there right now! I mean, the themes of racism & music are so relevant, it's like he knew exactly what we needed to see on screen! Michael B Jordan is KILLIN' it as lead - I don't know how he does it! The way Sinners breaks all those traditional rules is so refreshing, it's like a breath of fresh air! I'm literally on the edge of my seat waitin' for the Oscars, can you believe this dark horse might just take it all?! 🤩🎥💥

I'm low-key obsessed with how much buzz Sinners is generating 🤯🎥. I mean, it's not just about the film itself, but also the fact that it's giving those other Oscar faves a run for their money. And honestly, I think Coogler deserves it – he's always been ahead of his time with projects like Black Panther and Fruitvale Station 🕊️.

But what really got me was the snub to Paul Mescal's performance in One Battle After Another 🤔. Like, don't get me wrong, Mescal is talented, but Sinners' lead, Michael B Jordan, just brings a different level of intensity to the role 🔥.

I'm loving how Sinners is pushing boundaries with its genre-bending style and bold storytelling 💥. It's like Coogler is saying, "Hey, I'm gonna challenge you, Academy" 🎬. And if anyone can pull it off, it's him.

Can't wait to see what the Oscars have in store for Sinners – but let's be real, it's probably gonna sweep the night 🏆😎.
