‘Scary, cold, hungry and lonely’: Volunteer soldier shares experience on front line | CNN

"A Soldier's Desolate Reality: Life on the Front Lines"

For 20-year-old volunteer soldier Akula, enlisting in the war at its beginning was a decision made with bravery and idealism, but one that would soon take a devastating toll on his mental well-being. As he shares his harrowing experience on the front lines with CNN's David McKenzie, it becomes painfully clear just how traumatic this conflict has proven to be for those fighting on its periphery.

Akula describes life in the trenches as 'scary, cold, hungry and lonely'. The relentless barrage of artillery fire, the stench of rotting flesh and the perpetual sense of danger all combine to create an environment that's as physically exhausting as it is emotionally draining. For a young soldier like Akula, with no prior combat experience, the experience was overwhelming.

As he recounts his time on the front lines, it becomes clear that the mental toll of this conflict can be just as devastating as any physical injury. The isolation and loneliness are palpable, with little respite from the constant din of artillery fire. It's a sense of desolation that even the most hardened soldiers struggle to convey.

Despite his ordeal, Akula remains eerily calm, a testament to the steely resolve often seen in those who enlist for war. Yet beneath his stoic exterior, it's clear that this conflict has left an indelible mark on his mental health. The memories of what he's witnessed – and experienced – will haunt him for years to come.

The psychological scars of war are a harsh reality that these young soldiers often struggle to confront. As the world watches from afar, Akula's story serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of conflict, one that demands our attention and empathy.

This guy is literally a super soldier with no prior experience, put him in the trenches and watch how he breaks down 🤯. It's not just about physical injuries, mental health is so fragile when you're in that situation. I mean, can you imagine being surrounded by death and destruction 24/7? The loneliness and isolation must be suffocating 💔. We need to start talking more about the psychological toll of war on our soldiers, it's a silent crisis 🤝.

🤕 I'm really saddened by this story, it's just heartbreaking to think about what Akula and other soldiers like him have to go through. 20 years old, volunteering for war... that's crazy. He sounds so brave but also really broken after all he's been through. The loneliness and isolation must be unbearable. 🤝 I wish there were more resources available to help them deal with the trauma they're experiencing. We should be paying more attention to their mental health, not just their physical injuries. 💔

🤔 you know what's wild? i was just thinking about this like 5 minutes ago... i was trying to decide which podcast to listen to while i do my chores today 🧹😊 and then i saw the cutest video of a puppy playing with a ball on youtube 🐶💕 it really made me smile 😂. anyway, back to soldiers... i wonder if they get to keep any of the gear they find on the battlefield? like, would you want a bulletproof vest that's been through hell? 👔😬

🤕💔 this is so messed up 🚫 I mean, can you even imagine being in those trenches with no escape from the artillery fire? 🗑️ it's like something out of a horror movie 😱 and the smell of rotting flesh? 🚽 ugh, that's just horrific.

I think we need to do more to support our soldiers when they come back 🤝 mental health is just as important as physical health, you know? 💯 we can't just expect them to 'tough it out' or 'get over it' 😒 it takes time and effort to recover from what they've seen and experienced.

We need to be more empathetic and understanding 🤗 listen to their stories and try to put ourselves in their shoes 👣 that's how we can truly make a difference 💖

omg this soldier akula is literally so brave 😱 i mean enlisting at 20 and going through all that is just wow... his words are giving me chills tho 🤯 artillery fire stinks, can u imagine? and the loneliness is rly intense 🚫 no wonder he's struggling with mental health. we need to support these soldiers more 💕 they're not just fighting for their country, but for themselves too 🙏 it's so sad that they have to go through all this and carry the scars forever... 😔

man this is so depressing I cant even imagine being in those trenches with no sleep or food just thinking about it gives me the chills 🤕 akula seems like such a strong guy to still be calm but at the same time you can tell he's hurting deep down 🤗 its crazy how war affects your mind just as much as your body i feel bad for him and all the other soldiers who are going through this 😔

🤕 The thought of those poor soldiers on the front lines is just heartbreaking... I mean, can you even imagine having to deal with all that pressure and danger every single day? 🤯 It's no wonder they're struggling with mental health issues too. I think we need more support systems in place for these young people who are putting their lives on the line for us... 💖 It's a reminder that war isn't just about winning or losing, it's about the human cost and the scars that linger long after the battle is over 🌪️

you know what's crazy about this article... it's how we tend to remember war heroes like akula only when they're coming back stateside, but what about those who don't make it back? 🤕 it's all well and good for us to be empathetic towards the mental toll of war on soldiers, but have you ever stopped to think about the families left behind? 💔 i'm not trying to diminish akula's story or anything, but we gotta consider the bigger picture here. btw, what really gets me is how the media often portrays soldiers as these super tough warriors who can handle anything... meanwhile, they're hiding their true struggles because of some unspoken code of silence 🤐

man this article is like soooo true 🤕 I remember watching my cousin join the army last year and it was like they literally disappeared for 6 months or something. no phone, no contact, just dropped off into the unknown. his family couldn't even see him at all during that time. and when he finally came back he was like a different person. super quiet and distant. you could tell he'd seen some stuff that most people can't even imagine 💔

can you imagine being stuck in that kinda situation for months on end? it's like, no showering, no hot meals, just constant fear & adrenaline rush 🤯😓 akula's story is literally haunting me... how do ppl stay sane out there? mental health support should be a top priority for the military btw 💔

😔 this is what we're seeing on tv nowadays... all these young ppl putting themselves in harm's way for their country, thinkin they're bein brave & idealistic 🤕 but really they're just facin the harsh reality of war 😩 ... 20 yrs old akula's story is a good example of this. he talks about how scared, cold, hungry & lonely it was... can u imagine bein in those shoes? 🤷‍♂️ it's not all heroics & patriotism, it's just ppl tryin to survive 💔

🤔 this news is like, a total reflection of how society expects us to be strong in the face of trauma but doesn't really prepare us for the emotional toll it takes 📦 we expect soldiers to be brave and stoic but what about when they're not? does that just mean their mental health is a given sacrifice on the altar of patriotism? 💔

🤕 This is so sad man I cant even imagine being in his shoes for 20 yrs old to be put through all this its just not right 😔 the soldiers r already goin thru enough without us addin extra stress on their mental health 🤯 can we do better tho like provide more support and resources for these young ppl 🌟

omg u can feel the weight of those experiences 🤕💔 i just wanna give akula a big hug n be like yeah bro ur mental health matters 😊👫 its crazy how much trauma soldiers go thru on the front lines n ppl stil dont realize how harsh it is on their minds 💥 the govts gotta do more 2 support these brave souls 🙏💪

I just got back from the most amazing trip to Japan 🗺️, you know I've always wanted to try this new ramen place in Tokyo... oh wait, what was this article about again? 😂 sorry, didn't mean to derail the convo! So yeah, war is super harsh on people's minds... my cousin's friend's brother went through that and it totally messed him up 🤕. Have you guys ever tried those new PS5 games? I'm thinking of buying one next week 👾

😕 this article is really highlighting how messed up war can be 🤯 for those fighting on the front lines. I mean, 20 years old? That's crazy young to be dealing with all that trauma 🤷‍♂️. It's not just the physical stuff, but the mental toll too - loneliness, isolation... it's like they're stuck in a never-ending nightmare 😳. And you know what's even worse? The fact that we as a society often forget about these guys when the conflict is over 🙅‍♂️. We need to remember that war isn't just some abstract concept on TV or news - it's real life, with real people who are hurting 💔.

omg this article is so heartbreaking!!! 🤕 i mean 20 yrs old soldier gettin sent to war thinkin its gonna be some patriotic thing but nope its just a never endin nightmare 💔 how can we even call ourselves a society when we send these kids to fight & forget about the mental toll it takes? 🤷‍♂️ need more awareness about PTSD & support 4 our brave soldiers 🙏

I don't usually comment but I just feel so sad when I think about what those soldiers are going through 🤕. It's like they're fighting not just for their country but also for their own sanity. 20-year-olds should be out enjoying college or a job, not stuck in some godforsaken trench with no end in sight 😩. And the thing is, we can't even imagine what it's like to experience that level of fear and loneliness every day. We think about our problems and then suddenly they seem tiny compared to what these guys are dealing with 🤯.
