Sentimental Value sweeps up at European Film Awards

Norway's Joachim Trier swept the European Film Awards with his highly personal and critically acclaimed drama, Sentimental Value. The film took home five top prizes, including best picture, director, screenwriter, actor for Stellan Skarsgård, and actress for Renate Reinsve.

The Norwegian auteur's meta-drama, about an ageing filmmaker trying to recruit his estranged daughter for his final work, has been hailed as a strong contender for the Oscars at the Academy Awards in March. Trier's nuanced performance captures the fragility of human relationships, with Skarsgård delivering a poignant portrayal of his character.

The European Film Awards have long prided themselves on celebrating cultural diversity within the film world. However, it appears that sometimes just one film dominates the night, drawing attention away from other talented nominees. This year was no exception, with Trier's Sentimental Value dominating the ceremony, taking home prizes in multiple categories.

Despite this dominance, another powerful and thought-provoking film received a significant amount of recognition as well – Oliver Laxe's existential road-trip thriller Sirāt, which enjoyed five prize wins, including sound design. It was an evening that celebrated both exceptional storytelling and emotional depth.

However, not all nominees were so fortunate. The Iranian veteran director Jafar Panahi was disappointed when his film It Was Just an Accident went home empty-handed, despite being nominated in multiple categories. Meanwhile, German newcomer Mascha Schilinski's Sound of Falling only managed to take the prize for costume design.

On a lighter note, young filmmaker Laura Carreira won the Discovery award with her first full-length feature On Falling, set in an Amazon-style retail warehouse. The ceremony, held in Berlin this year, marked the awards' first attempt to establish themselves as a stronger player in their own right rather than just a bellwether for the US film season.

The final list of winners included notable names from across Europe and beyond – including Alice Rohrwacher receiving the Achievement in world cinema award. The ceremony also saw Norwegian actress Liv Ullmann receive a Lifetime achievement award, recognizing her remarkable contributions to European filmmaking.

omg i'm so bummed for jafar panahi 🤕 his film it was just an accident sounded amazing and i loved him as a director too 🎥 anyways, the real winner here is europe cinema in general 🙌 we need more movies like sentimental value (not that i don't love sirāt too) but also oliver laxe's sound design was insane 🔊 this year's efa awards were def on point 😎 and can we talk about liv ullmann getting a lifetime achievement award? shes an icon 🙌 the discovery award winner laura carreira is super talented too 🤩 gotta keep an eye out for her future films 📺

I'm kinda confused about this whole thing... I mean, on one hand, I think it's awesome that Joachim Trier won all those awards for Sentimental Value 🤔. The film is super deep and nuanced, and Stellan Skarsgård's performance was amazing 😊. But at the same time, I feel bad for Oliver Laxe and his film Sirāt... they were kinda robbed of more attention 🙄. And what about Mascha Schilinski? Her costume design prize was a nice consolation, but I bet she'd have wanted more 💁‍♀️. On a good note, though, it's super cool that Laura Carreira won the Discovery award for her debut film... maybe one day she'll be up there with Trier and Laxe 🤞🎥

I'm so hyped for Joachim Trier 🎥👏, but at the same time I feel bad for some of the other nominees that didn't take home any prizes. It's like they were just invisible 🤔. I mean, Jafar Panahi's film was supposed to be a contender for the Oscars, and yet it went empty-handed? That's just not right 😐. Maybe next year will be better? Fingers crossed 👍. On a more positive note, Laura Carreira is like a breath of fresh air 🌿 with her Discovery award win! She's got so much potential and I'm excited to see what she does next 💥.

I'm still not convinced about these awards 🤔. I mean, five prizes for one film? That's just too much 🙅‍♂️. Don't get me wrong, Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value is a great film and all, but can't the other nominees just chill? 😒 It feels like some of these award shows are more about boosting the ego of the winners than actually celebrating cinema 🎬. And what's with the dominance from Norway this year? Just wondering if there's something brewing in Oslo 💡. Anyway, at least Laura Carreira won that Discovery award – a talented young filmmaker! 👏

I'm loving how the European Film Awards are pushing boundaries this year! 🎥 But I gotta say, it's kinda bittersweet when one film takes home most of the prizes... Sentimental Value is an amazing film, but can't we give more love to other talented filmmakers like Jafar Panahi? 🤕 It Was Just an Accident was a powerful watch, and it's a shame it didn't get more recognition. On the bright side, I'm hyped for Laura Carreira's Discovery award win - that young filmmaker is gonna do great things! 💥

🎥 Trier's win is definitely a big deal, but I feel like Sentimental Value has been getting a lot of hype lately... maybe it's just because he's a Norway native and got all the attention? 🤔 Still, congrats to Skarsgård, Reinsve, and the entire team. It's awesome that there are more talented filmmakers like Oliver Laxe and Laura Carreira out there too 👍

I'm not surprised Sentimental Value won all those prizes 🙌💥 it's like one of those movies you can't take your eyes off. But I do feel for Jafar Panahi and Mascha Schilinski, their films are so important too 🤕💔. And y'know what? Sometimes I think the European Film Awards could focus more on giving out prizes to all the nominees, not just the ones that get most of the attention 🙄👀. Like Sirāt was amazing and deserved some recognition too!

man i feel so good about this eurpean film awards celebration 🎉! like joachim trier's sentimental value got all the recognition it deserved, and stellan skarsgard's performance was mind-blowing 🤯. but at the same time, i'm glad oliver laxe's sirāt got some love too, that existential road-trip thriller is so unique 🚗.

i do feel bad for jafar panahi though, his film it was just an accident didn't take home any prizes 😔. and maybe mascha schilinski's sound of falling could've gotten a bit more recognition too 🎀.

but on the bright side, young filmmaker laura carreira won that discovery award with her feature film on falling 🙌! and alice rohwacher getting that achievement in world cinema award is amazing 👏. it just shows how european film awards are trying to be more inclusive and celebrate all sorts of storytelling styles 🎥.

anyway, liv ullmann's lifetime achievement award was totally deserved 🙌! she's a legend in the industry. i'm just glad we got to see so many talented filmmakers recognized tonight 💕.

🤔 u know i was thinking, its kinda weird how these awards focus so much on one film dominating everything. like, dont get me wrong, joachim trier and sentimental value is an amazing film but cant we give some love to other talented people too? 🙃 like i was really rooting for mascha schilinski's sound of falling, and her costume design win was totally deserved! 🎭 also, its great that they gave a lifetime achievement award to liv ullmann - she's literally a legend in the industry. but at the same time, it feels kinda unfair when other directors like jafar panahi are snubbed entirely... 🤷‍♂️ just my two cents

OMG I'm so hyped for Joachim Trier right now! 🤩 His film Sentimental Value is literally on my watchlist already and the fact that it took home 5 top prizes at the European Film Awards just gives me chills 😍. Stellan Skarsgård's performance is giving me all the feels, you know? 🎥 I love how Trier explores the fragility of human relationships in his film - it's so relatable! 👫 And it's amazing to see a Norwegian director winning awards for his work... Norway needs more representation on the global stage! 🌟

I don’t usually comment but... I'm loving how diverse the winner list was this year 🤩! It's amazing to see a film like Sirāt getting so much love for its sound design, even if it wasn't the overall winner 🎧. And can we talk about Laura Carreira winning that Discovery award? She's totally deserving of it 🙌! I'm also so glad they gave Liv Ullmann that Lifetime achievement award - she's a true legend in the film industry 💫. The only thing that's bugging me is how some films didn't win any awards at all 😔, like Jafar Panahi's It Was Just an Accident. Maybe next year will be better for him? 🤞

🎥👏 I'm so stoked for Joachim Trier's win 🙌! Sentimental Value is literally my fave film of the year 😍 Stellan Skarsgård's performance was SO poignant 🤕, and Renate Reinsve's acting skills are insane 💯.

But, honestly, I'm a little bummed for all the other talented filmmakers who didn't win 🤔. Jafar Panahi's It Was Just an Accident is such a powerful film 🙏, and Mascha Schilinski's Sound of Falling was so beautifully shot 🌅. Laura Carreira's On Falling is like, totally inspiring young filmmakers 💫!

And can we talk about Liv Ullmann's Lifetime Achievement Award? 🎉 She's literally a legend in the film industry 🙌! The European Film Awards are doing their thing, celebrating cultural diversity and showcasing amazing films 📚. Can't wait to see what next year brings 🤞👀

Wow 😍 Sentimental Value was definitely on fire last night, winning all those top prizes! Interesting how it overshadowed some of the other great films like Sirāt, though - maybe next year we'll see more diversity in the winners? 🤔 On a lighter note, I'm so excited for Laura Carreira's win and discovery award, her film on an Amazon warehouse sounds fascinating 📺

man... feel bad for jafar panahi 🤕 his film was supposed to be like a game changer but still didn't take any home 🤔 at least he got recognition tho 🙏 and that discovery award winner laura carreira is like super talented 🎬 gotta root for the new gen filmmakers 💖

I think this whole thing just speaks to the systemic issues within our cultural institutions 🤔... I mean, have you seen the winner list? It's all Norway and Norway, all night long! 😂 Just one film dominating the ceremony, while others get left in the dust. What about the underdog films like Sirāt? Were they just overshadowed by Trier's prestige? And what's up with the lack of representation from other countries, especially with the discovery award going to a young filmmaker from Portugal... does that signal a growing divide within European cinema? 🤷‍♂️ On the other hand, we should be celebrating these talented artists, regardless of nationalities. I think this just highlights our need for more nuanced film festivals and awards systems that can showcase a broader range of perspectives 🎥

I'm fascinated by the phenomenon where one film can sweep the European Film Awards, often overshadowing other exceptional works 🤯. While Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value is undeniably a masterclass in storytelling and acting, I worry that this dominance might detract from the diversity of voices on the global cinematic landscape 🌎.

On the flip side, it's heartening to see the European Film Awards embracing their own identity as a platform for showcasing unique European perspectives 🎥. The recognition of Oliver Laxe's Sirāt and Laura Carreira's On Falling is particularly noteworthy, highlighting the next generation of talent breaking through in the industry 👍.

It's also worth noting that while some nominees didn't receive prizes, they undoubtedly contribute to the richness and depth of the film world 📚. Perhaps this year's European Film Awards should focus on expanding their horizons by celebrating a wider range of stories, rather than just highlighting individual triumphs 💡.

Ugh, I'm so done with these Euro film awards 🙄 they always seem to favor that one overhyped movie and leave the other amazing films in the dust... I mean, don't get me wrong, Joachim Trier is a legend and Sentimental Value is an incredible film, but can we give some love to those underdog stories? Like Sirāt was seriously on fire this year 🌟, and Laura Carreira's On Falling was a breath of fresh air... I'm just worried that It Was Just an Accident might've been snubbed for no reason 😔. Anyway, on a more positive note, it's awesome to see Liv Ullmann getting the Lifetime Achievement award - what a queen 🙌!

omg can u beleev Joachim Trier won EVERYTHING?! i mean dont get me wrong its an amazing film but like seriously sentimental value dominating the whole ceremony? didnt anyone else deserve more love?! im still thinking bout how much i hated that prize for costume design Mascha Schilinski's Sound of Falling was like literally so underrated

just watched that efa ceremony 🎥👏. felt kinda weird seeing one film dominate like that though 😐. don't get me wrong, joachim trier's sentimental value is amazing and all 💕, but it's always interesting to see other films get lost in the shuffle 👀. anyway, glad to see some new talent shine through, like laura carreira with on falling 🎬👏. also, congrats to liv ullmann for that lifetime achievement award 🙌💖.
