Some fans whistle as Lionel Messi’s name is announced as Paris Saint-Germain’s season hits new low | CNN

Tension Erupts at Paris Saint-Germain as Fans Show Discontent Towards Star Player Lionel Messi

In a shocking display of discontent, some fans of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) whistled when Lionel Messi's name was announced during the team's starting lineup announcement on Sunday. The incident came on the back of a dismal home defeat to Lyon, which marked PSG's second consecutive loss at the Parc des Princes.

The 1-0 win for Lyon was largely unopposed, with Bradley Barcola scoring the only goal in the 32nd minute. Despite Messi's 34 goal contributions in all competitions this season, including 18 goals and 17 assists, his team struggled to create chances against Lyon.

Coach Christophe Galtier refused to lay blame for the defeat at Messi's feet, instead emphasizing the need for teamwork. "I found it hard to listen to," Galtier said. "There may be expectations for Messi and Mbappe to unlock difficult situations. Messi tries very hard, they didn't all work out; but around him, the other players also need to do their jobs."

The tension between some fans and Messi is a stark contrast to the adoration he received when returning to Argentina for friendlies against Panama and Curaçao earlier this month.

PSG's woes have put pressure on their domestic title ambitions. With Lens' 1-0 victory over Rennes and Marseille's 1-1 draw with Montepellier, both teams are now just six points behind PSG at the top of Ligue 1. Even the domestic title may slip from the team's grasp.

As the season enters its critical phase, PSG faces a make-or-break week ahead. They will travel to an unbeaten Nice side that has won 13 consecutive matches and host Lens at home in their next fixture.

PSG's struggles have also drawn criticism from former Lyon coach Laurent Blanc, who believes that the team's focus on winning the Champions League has led to a negative impact on their performances. "Paris' problem is when the No. 1 objective of the Champions League is no longer accessible, it seems that the season no longer exists – and at all levels," Blanc said.

The situation highlights the growing pressure on PSG to perform, with fans, coaches, and players alike feeling the weight of expectation.

omg u guys i'm literally dying rn lol what's going on w/ psg fans?? 🤯 they're whistling at messi during his intro?! like what even is that?! 😂 i know ppl r gonna be harsh cuz they lost but c'mon, the dude's been carryin' them this season! 34 goal contributions and not enough love from the fans? 🤷‍♂️ coach galtier said it best tho - it's all about teamwork, not just messi doin' everything himself. 💪 can't wait to see what happens next, fam! psg needs to get their act together ASAP, or else they'll lose that domestic title 😱

Ugh, can't believe the state of PSG's fanbase 🤦‍♂️. I mean, come on, Lionel Messi is still putting in the work, contributing 34 goals this season, but some fans are whistling at him? That's just ridiculous 😳. I get it, results have been poor lately, but to take out your frustrations on the guy who's carrying the team is unfair 🙄.

And what's with Coach Galtier not calling out Messi directly? It's easy to blame the players, but sometimes you gotta point fingers at those in charge 👊. And don't even get me started on the pressure to perform 🤯. PSG's domestic title hopes are slipping away, and it's all because they can't manage expectations 📉.

PSG needs to sort out their issues, not just Messi or Mbappe, but the whole team and staff 🙏. And Laurent Blanc is right, focusing too much on the Champions League has led to a lack of competitiveness in Ligue 1 🚫. Until they get it together, I'll be over here, watching from the sidelines 📺...

OMG, like seriously, can't believe some PSG fans are being so harsh on Messi 🤯! 34 goals and 17 assists this season is still insane, but I guess when you're not getting those wins, people get salty 😒. Galtier's right, though - it's all about teamwork and everyone needs to step up their game. And btw, Lens' win over Rennes and Marseille's draw with Montepellier just shows how competitive Ligue 1 is right now 🏆. The pressure's definitely on PSG to perform, but I'm still rooting for them (for now) 😉.

omg u guys can't blame messi 4 everything lol he's been carrying dat team 2 death & still gets whistled by his own fans? that's harsh tbh i mean yes he's human n all but c'mon PSG fans get over it ur team's just havin a bad patch rn an dats not all on messi's shoulders coach galtier said it loud & clear - teamwork is key u cant just rely on 1 player 2 win u gotta work as a unit

I feel for those PSG fans 🤗. I mean, you're paying big bucks to watch Messi play, and it's frustrating when he can't deliver in big games. But at the same time, you gotta wonder if some of that pressure is coming from above... like from the coaches and the club itself? It's tough being a fan when everyone expects so much from your team 🤔.

And I love how coach Galtier is trying to shift the blame away from Messi. I think he's right - we need our players to work together as a team if we're gonna win big games 💪.

It's also got me thinking about what happens when the big names leave or don't perform... do fans still show up? Do they still care? I mean, PSG has an amazing squad, but it's not just about Messi - is that what makes them special? 🤷‍♀️

I'm thinking PSG needs to step up their game, you know? They're not just struggling against Lyon, but other teams too. It's not all Messi's fault, even though he's an amazing player 🤯. Coach Galtier is right, it's a team effort, and players need to do their jobs. Fans can get salty when they don't see the results they want, but this isn't fair on Messi. He's been doing his part, and some fans need to chill out 😒. It's not just about winning the Champions League, though that's a big goal - it's also about performing in Ligue 1 🏆.

Oh man I feel bad for Messi right now 🤕, he's been carrying his team all season long but it seems like the fans are getting a little too hard on him 😔. I can imagine how frustrating it must be to see your teammates not step up and create chances when you're doing everything possible in your power to help them out 💪. The pressure from the fans, coaches, and even some ex-coaches is just too much 🤯. PSG needs to come together as a team and support each other if they want to turn their season around 🔥. It's not all Messi's fault, like coach Galtier said 👍. They need to work on that teamwork and communication to get back on track 💬

so this mess at PSG is getting crazy 🤯, like who expected fans to boo Messi after he's been doing his thing for them all season? 😂 still, gotta feel for Galtier trying to manage expectations and whatnot... like, yeah maybe Messi can't single-handedly win every game. but 34 goal contributions ain't bad either 🤓 meanwhile, this Lyon loss is getting PSG's domestic title hopes in a tight spot ⏰ gonna be super interesting to see how they bounce back from this one 🔥
