The best theatre to stream this month: big and bold Bacchae ushers in new era at the National

The National Theatre is gearing up for its new era, with artistic director Indhu Rubasingham launching her tenure with a bold spin on Euripides' classic play, 'Bacchae'. The Olivier theatre will host Nima Taleghani's adaptation, featuring choreography by Kate Prince and a self-styled "raucous Greek chorus" led by Clare Perkins.

For those who prefer the comfort of their own homes, the NT at Home platform will offer this production on February 6th, accompanied by a Q&A with Rubasingham. The National Theatre has also lined up another engaging offering: Cole Porter's 'Kiss Me, Kate', based on Shakespeare's 'The Taming of the Shrew'. This musical comedy features Adrian Dunbar and Stephanie J Block as sparring partners.

Dance enthusiasts might be interested in the documentary '(La)Horde: Desire, Revolt and Refuge' available for BBC iPlayer. French collective (La)Horde is explored through their dance performances which are influenced by social media to strip clubs.

Fans of intense drama will appreciate 'Trouble', an unsettling film on Arte.tv featuring Laura Bachman's cinematography. The movie focuses on the terror experienced by a young woman during a crowded bus ride and a nightclub encounter. This gripping piece of performance art highlights each tense movement through striking close-ups.

This month also brings an enchanting production, 'The Twelfth Night Reunion', where Gyles Brandreth gathers a group of stars to share their memories of performing Shakespeare's iconic play.

Pig Iron theatre company has created a captivating dance-theatre cabaret inspired by Aimee Mann songs for the past two weeks. This dark, noire-inspired production can be streamed from Philadelphia's Wilma Theater.

Finally, for those who enjoy watching classical theatre on demand, the 1998 RSC staging of 'The Winter's Tale' is now available on the Theatre Channel.

The BBC Audio Drama Awards have also announced their finalists, with three original single dramas vying for the top prize in March.

I'm so over these new streaming platforms trying to force everything under one umbrella πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. The National Theatre's NT at Home is just another example of this - an entire season of plays and musicals crammed into one platform, it's like they're trying to suffocate the art 🎭. And don't even get me started on the documentaries being plastered all over BBC iPlayer, who thought that was a good idea? One documentary after another, each more mediocre than the last 😴. Can't we just have a dedicated platform for theatre and not have everything thrown in there like a salad bar 🍲? And while we're at it, can someone explain to me why 'Kiss Me, Kate' is being advertised as a musical comedy when I know it's actually based on 'The Taming of the Shrew', just my two cents πŸ’β€β™€οΈ.

I'm so over how different everything is these days 🀯 I mean, remember when we could just get to a theatre and enjoy some live performances without needing a fancy screen or streaming it on our phones? And now they're making all this stuff available online πŸ“Ί like it's going out of style. But you know what's still good old school? 'Bacchae' on the Olivier stage, that's my jam πŸ’ƒ I hope they don't mess it up with too much fancy production design and stuff... just let the play be itself, you know? And those musicals, oh man, Cole Porter's got nothing on some of our old-school show tunes from the 80s 🎸

I don’t usually comment but I think it’s so cool that they're making all these amazing productions available online 🀩. Like, 'Bacchae' at the National Theatre is gonna be lit πŸ˜† and I'm super excited to watch it from the comfort of my own home on NT at Home. And a Q&A with Indhu Rubasingham? Mind blown πŸ’₯. I also love that they're showcasing different styles and genres like Pig Iron theatre company's dark, noire-inspired production - it just goes to show that there's something for everyone out there 🌈. Can't wait to binge-watch all these productions! πŸ“Ί

Omg, just saw that the National Theatre is doing a production of 'Bacchae' and I'm low-key excited! 🀣 But can we talk about how they're not even using social media to promote it? Like, come on! All these festivals and events are all over Instagram and TikTok and this iconic play just gets a vague announcement. It's like they want us to be all nostalgic for the good old days... πŸ˜’ What do you guys think is up with that?

I'm really excited to see Indhu Rubasingham kick off her tenure at the National Theatre with a bold reinterpretation of Euripides' 'Bacchae'. The addition of Kate Prince's choreography and Clare Perkins' self-styled Greek chorus is already generating buzz 🀩. And for those who prefer staying in, the NT at Home platform will offer a Q&A session with Rubasingham on February 6th - a great opportunity to engage with the artistic director herself πŸ’‘. Meanwhile, I'm intrigued by the documentary '(La)Horde: Desire, Revolt and Refuge', which explores French collective (La)Horde's dance performances influenced by social media to strip clubs πŸŒƒ. The combination of dance, performance art, and social commentary sounds like a fascinating watch.

Ugh, I'm so over all these "artsy" events trying to be edgy... Nima Taleghani's adaptation of 'Bacchae' sounds like just another pretentious attempt at making Greek drama relevant πŸ™„. And Clare Perkins leading a "raucous Greek chorus"? Give me a break. It's just gonna be a bunch of hipsters singing along to some ancient tunes while sipping on artisanal wine 🍷.

I just saw this documentary '(La)Horde: Desire, Revolt and Refuge' on BBC iPlayer 🀯 it's so fascinating! I mean, can you imagine taking your dance performances to strip clubs? πŸŒƒ It's like they're blurring the lines between art and reality. And the way the performers use social media as inspiration is just mind-blowing... I feel like we're living in a whole new world where art knows no boundaries 😲. Pig Iron theatre company's cabaret sounds so dark and intense, I'm tempted to give it a try 🎭

omg u gotta see this new production by Nima Taleghani at the national theatre its like nothing ur ever seen b4 - a raucous greek chorus led by clare perkins is gonna blow ur mind 🀯πŸ’₯ and they r streaming it online on feb 6th for those who dont wanna leave ur couch πŸ‘€ also heard they got cole porter's kiss me kate coming up which sounds like so much fun w/ adrian dunbar & stephanie j block - cant wait to see these actors bring the house down 🏠🎭

omg u guys i just saw the trailer for the new ntl production of bacchae & i am SHAKEN it's like totally not what i expected but in a good way ?? i mean we all know i'm a total theatre nerd but this adaptation with that raucous greek chorus sounds AMAZING πŸ’₯ i need to get tix ASAP ! and also can someone pls remind me how to wear my hair for the theatre night out lol i'm feeling super anxious about it 🀯

just saw that another massive power outage hit london like what's next lol anyway apparently some ppl r going to miss out on classical theatre productions because they cant afford tickets and some theatre companies need to raise funds by selling merchandise πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ & btw isnt it wild that the arts community has no idea how many people are struggling to make ends meet

idk why ppl still watch live theater but its like the old days where u cant even stream shows like that anymore πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ they gotta bring it to ur own space now lol what's wrong w/ a little catwalkin' though? love clare perkins and cole porter, btw

Ugh, just another bunch of stuff being forced onto my platform πŸ€―πŸ˜’. The National Theatre thinks they're all fancy with their new era and whatnot, but honestly, can't they just give me some decent streaming quality? I mean, I'm paying for this too, right? And don't even get me started on the weird format of 'Trouble', it's like, 10 minutes of close-ups and no dialogue? What's up with that πŸ€”πŸ˜΄. And can we please just stick to one or two decent streaming options instead of having to scroll through a gazillion events? My eyes are killing me 😩.

πŸ€” just saw that NT is offering 'Bacchae' online and i gotta say its like they're trying to bring some much needed energy back into arts after all these years of austerity 🎭 cant wait to see this production but why not offer more free events or performances for those who can't afford tickets? 😊

I'm so excited for the NT at Home platform to offer 'Bacchae', it's a bold move, and I love that they're making it accessible from home 🀩! The addition of Cole Porter's 'Kiss Me, Kate' is also looking great, I've heard Adrian Dunbar is just fantastic in this musical. I'm curious about '(La)Horde: Desire, Revolt and Refuge', the idea of dance performances influenced by social media is really intriguing 🌐. The documentary on Arte.tv, 'Trouble', sounds super intense and I love that it highlights each tense movement with close-ups 😬. It's also nice to see a reunion production like 'The Twelfth Night Reunion' - it's always great to see familiar actors come together again πŸ‘₯!

OMG, can't wait to see Indhu Rubasingham's spin on Euripides' 'Bacchae' at the National Theatre 🎭! The NT at Home platform is a great way to enjoy live theatre from home, especially with that Q&A session on Feb 6th πŸ“Ί. Cole Porter's 'Kiss Me, Kate' sounds like so much fun, love Adrian Dunbar and Stephanie J Block as sparring partners πŸ’β€β™€οΈ! Also, I'm intrigued by '(La)Horde: Desire, Revolt and Refuge', can't wait to watch that doc on BBC iPlayer πŸ“Ή. The Twelfth Night Reunion is such a cool idea, gathering all those famous actors to share their memories 🀩. And Pig Iron theatre company's Aimee Mann-inspired dance-theatre cabaret sounds SO dark and fabulous πŸ’ƒ! What about you, got any faves on the list?

I'm so stoked to see what The National Theatre has in store for us this year! 🀩 They're really pushing the boundaries with that 'Bacchae' production and I love how they're making it accessible on NT at Home too. That Q&A session is going to be fire πŸ”₯. And can't wait to get my dance fix with '(La)Horde: Desire, Revolt and Refuge', sounds like a wild ride πŸŽ‰. The fact that they're exploring social media's influence on performance art is so relevant.

I'm also hyped about 'The Twelfth Night Reunion' - who wouldn't want to hear from all these legendary actors sharing their memories? πŸ’ And Pig Iron theatre company's cabaret inspired by Aimee Mann songs sounds like a total vibe 🎢.

It's great to see The National Theatre supporting the BBC Audio Drama Awards too. Good luck to all the finalists! πŸ‘
