The Carabao Cup semis and more upheaval at Real Madrid: Football Weekly Extra – podcast

The Carabao Cup semi-final matches have been filled with drama and controversy, as two of England's top teams clashed in the first leg of their respective quarter-finals. Arsenal dominated Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, scoring twice to take a crucial 2-0 lead in the tie. However, despite the Blues' frustration, Liam Rosenior took heart from a solid defensive display and praised his players for their commitment.

Meanwhile, Manchester City dismantled Newcastle United 2-0, with Pep Guardiola's side showing off their usual attacking flair. The Magpies were left to ponder what might have been, as VAR intervened in the game on multiple occasions, leading to a lengthy delay that overshadowed the action on the pitch.

The panel of experts was quick to dissect the VAR controversies, but ultimately, it was City's clinical finishing that won the day. With their next match against Manchester United coming up, City will be looking to maintain their momentum and make a strong statement in the Premier League title race.

In other news, Xabi Alonso has parted ways with Real Madrid, leaving the Spanish giants to ponder what went wrong. The club's recent transfer business and poor performances on the pitch have raised questions about Alonso's long-term prospects at the Bernabeu.

🤔 I think the VAR controversies are getting a bit out of hand 🙅‍♂️. Like, is it really that hard to make a clear call? I mean, the Magpies were clearly frustrated, but holding up the game like that must've been super frustrating for the players and fans 😩. And what's with all these delays in general? It's not exactly adding to the excitement of the match 🕰️. City won because they're a great team with amazing players, not because VAR was somehow decisive 🙏. As for Alonso, yeah, his departure from Real Madrid makes sense - the club needs to sort out their transfer business and get some results on the pitch 💼. Can't win 'em all! 😬

🤗 I feel ya, watching all this drama go down is so stressful. One minute your team's up 2-0 and the next VAR's throwing it into disarray 🤯. I'd have a total meltdown if I were a player. On a lighter note, Xabi Alonso leaving Real Madrid doesn't surprise me at all 😔. It sounds like things haven't been going great for them lately. Can you imagine having to deal with that pressure? 🙅‍♂️

Ugh, VAR is just getting out of hand 🤦‍♂️... I mean, I get it, mistakes happen, but the way they're being applied now is just ridiculous. It's like they're more concerned with looking good than actually making a fair call. And don't even get me started on how long those delays are taking! It's like, can't we just focus on the game already? 🕰️ And what's up with all these teams relying so heavily on VAR anyway? It's like they're not trusting their own players to make good decisions on the pitch. I'm just worried that it's going to take away from the actual football experience... 😒

omg what was up with that VAR delay 🙄 it's like they're trying to win the game for Newcastle instead of just making fair calls 😒 anyway back to City vs United it's gonna be a huge match and i'm rooting for city to keep their momentum going 💪 but can't help feeling bad for Alonso he's been an icon at Real Madrid and i hope he finds his footing elsewhere 🤞

I'm just gonna share my thoughts on this Carabao Cup drama 🤔. I think it's crazy how VAR can turn a game around like that. One minute you're feeling good about your team, the next minute you're wondering what happened 😩. It really highlights how unpredictable football can be.

And I've got to say, I'm loving City's form right now 💪. They're on fire and it's scary for the rest of the league. But at the same time, I feel bad for Newcastle 🤕. They deserved better than that. Maybe they just need to regroup and come back stronger next match.

On another note, Xabi Alonso out of Real Madrid? That's a shock 💥. He's had some great moments with the team, but it seems like things didn't work out in the end. Hopefully he'll bounce back from this and find his feet elsewhere 🤞.
