Trinity Rodman signs landmark three-year Washington Spirit deal

Trinity Rodman has become the world's highest-paid female footballer after signing a three-year deal with Washington Spirit worth $2m (£1.5m) per year including bonuses. The 23-year-old US forward, daughter of former NBA star Dennis Rodman, was a free agent since her previous deal expired on December 31.

The new contract will keep Rodman with the Spirit until 2028 and has reportedly made her the highest-paid female player in the world. However, sources in Spain argue that Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati remains the best-paid player due to the conversion of US dollars to euros.

Rodman's agent claims that the multi-million dollar contract will make her the highest-paid female player from July 1 when new salary cap amendments in the National Women's Super League (NWSL) come into force. The Spirit had to battle to keep Rodman, who has been a key player for the team since her debut season in 2021.

As part of Rodman's new contract, guaranteed bonuses and agent fees are included in the salary total. The NWSL base salary cap will still be $3.5m (£2.6m) per team but the threshold for 'high-impact players' to qualify will grow each year at the same rate as the league's base salary cap.

Rodman has won 47 caps for the USA, scoring 11 goals since her debut in 2022 and scored three goals at the 2024 Paris Olympics where the US team won gold. Her signing is a significant boost to the NWSL and comes after several US players have moved to European leagues such as Chelsea.

The Spirit's owner Michele Kang has stated that Rodman represents the future of women's soccer, adding to the league's growing reputation for attracting top talent from around the world. With US billionaire owners investing heavily in their clubs, salaries are only going to increase across the global women's football landscape.
