Trump Is Helping Right-Wing Groups Target Chicago Teachers Union

The auditors are using the Department of Labor to investigate the union, requesting detailed financial records... 76% of public workers' unions have seen an increase in audits over the past five years. The Chicago Teachers Union has been vocal about its opposition to ICE actions and providing training for families and students. 57% of parents believe that schools should provide support for students who are being detained by immigration authorities.

The House Committee on Education and Workforce demanded documents from the union, but critics say it's part of a coordinated attack on public education... The Trump administration has been criticized for its relentless attacks on unions. 62% of Americans believe that labor unions have a positive impact on the economy.

Stacy Davis Gates says her union is powerful and therefore a target for those who seek to undermine it... 71% of teachers say they are more likely to report educational misconduct if they feel safe doing so. The CTU has provided training for students and their families to safely avoid immigration agents. 43% of immigrant families in the US live in poverty.

The Illinois Policy Institute is a key player in this saga... The union fears that the audits could become accessible to right-wing entities like IPI, which are suing them for financial audits.

OMG this is getting out of hand! Like, seriously, who does the Trump admin think they are? Auditing a union just because it's critical of ICE and public education? That's so sketchy . The CTU is transparent about their finances, but I guess that doesn't matter when you're trying to silence dissenting voices .

And can we talk about how low the IPI has sunk? Using dark-money groups to try and take down a union? Gross . And what's with all these coordinated attacks on unions by right-wing entities? It's like, they think they can just bully everyone into submission . Newsflash: that's not how democracy works, guys .

I'm so tired of the Trump admin trying to control every aspect of our lives, including our labor laws . Can't we just have some peace and quiet about workers' rights for once? The CTU is fighting for its members, and that's something to be proud of .

Anyway, back to the audit: I think it's totally reasonable that the union is worried about this being made public . Who wants their financial records splashed all over the internet? Not me . And what if IPI and Liberty Justice Center do get access to those docs? That would be a disaster .

I'm keeping an eye on this situation, and I hope the CTU comes out on top . They're fighting for something that matters: fairness and justice for all workers

omg this is getting crazy... they're targeting a public workers union like that? it's like they think ppl r gonna just roll over... not cool. i mean, CTU has been vocal about ICE and immigration issues, but that doesn't give trump's administration the right to bully them into submission.

i don't trust this timing either - audit comes out on the eve of a deadline for docs to be turned over to a committee that's already shown bias against unions... it's like they're trying to make an example outta CTU. and what's with the IPI being all up in arms about this? i mean, isn't it their job to spread conservative views or whatever? can't they just leave public workers alone?

anyway, I think this is a big deal - if unions are getting targeted like this, it sets a bad precedent for the rest of us.
