Twins’ Byron Buxton named to USA’s World Baseball Classic roster

Twins' Star Byron Buxton Joins Team USA for World Baseball Classic

Byron Buxton has been named to Team USA's roster for the upcoming World Baseball Classic, becoming just the fourth outfielder to commit to the team. The Twins' center fielder joins teammate Joe Ryan in representing the organization at the tournament. This is both players' first WBC appearance, with Buxton and Ryan joining a star-studded roster featuring Aaron Judge, Bobby Witt Jr., Paul Skenes, and Tarik Skubal.

Buxton's inclusion was expected after Twins manager Mark DeRosa and general manager Michael Hill confirmed last month that the center fielder was under "serious consideration" to join the team. The decision is a strategic move by Team USA to balance its roster with players who can offer right-handed power and defensive capabilities. Hill pointed out that Buxton's speed, defense, and right-handed bat would complement some of the other pieces on the team.

The Twins' center fielder had an impressive all-star season in 2024, hitting .264 with a .878 OPS and posting a career-high 35 home runs while driving in 83. He was also seen as one of the top players in American League Most Valuable Player voting. DeRosa praised Buxton's growth from working out with young pitchers and described him as "time for the world to see him run around in center field."

Team USA will convene in Arizona before the tournament, playing two exhibition games on March 3-4 before beginning play in Pool B alongside Brazil, Great Britain, Italy, and Mexico at Daikin Park. The first round will take place from March 6-11, with quarterfinals for Pools A and B occurring on March 13-14. The tournament will conclude in Miami, where the winner will be crowned on March 17.

The United States last won the World Baseball Classic in 2017 and finished as a runner-up to Japan in 2023.

Yooo what's good! 🤩 Byron Buxton getting his first taste of the WBC is gonna be lit 🔥! I love how they're stacking the roster with guys who bring that right-handed power & defense. Buxton's speed and defense are gonna complement the team perfectly 🏃‍♂️🔒. He had an all-star season in 2024, no doubt about it 💪. I'm hyped to see him run around in center field 🎯! Team USA needs a strong showing this time around, considering they didn't win since 2017 📆. Brazil, Great Britain, Italy, and Mexico are gonna give 'em a run for their money tho 😬. Can't wait for the tournament to start! March 3-4 can't come soon enough ⏰

Ugh, can you believe it? Byron Buxton is finally getting his moment in the spotlight! I mean, he's been raking it up for the Twins all season long 🤯, but this is just incredible news for baseball fans everywhere! The fact that Team USA picked him to join the roster is a no-brainer - speed, defense, and power are exactly what they needed to round out their lineup. And let's be real, Buxton's growth from last year was insane 🤯, I mean, who would've thought he'd hit 35 home runs? The kid's got game, for sure! DeRosa said it best - the world is about to see what Byron can do on a big stage. Bring it on, USA! 🇺🇸

🤩 Can't wait for the World Baseball Classic to start! I think Byron Buxton is gonna bring some serious heat to Team USA, his speed and defense are gonna be a game changer 🏆. I'm also stoked that he's got some big names on his team like Aaron Judge and Bobby Witt Jr. 🤯 The Twins have been doing great lately and it's awesome to see Buxton getting the recognition he deserves 💪. I just hope they can bring home that WBC trophy this year! 🏆

I'm intrigued by Byron Buxton's inclusion in Team USA for the World Baseball Classic 🤔. On one hand, it's awesome that he gets to represent his country on such a big stage, showcasing his skills and hard work in front of a global audience. But, can we really say that his value lies solely in his ability to offer right-handed power and defensive capabilities? Is there more to his game than that? 🏟️ What does it say about our society when we're more focused on strategic team moves rather than individual player development? And what's the pressure like for a 25-year-old player to live up to expectations, especially when he's playing in front of millions of people? 🤯

OMG 🤯 this is awesome! Buxton's stats are crazy btw .264 AVG, .878 OPS, 35 HRs... that's some top-notch stuff 🤩. And the fact that he's joining Team USA alongside Ryan makes me think they've got a solid chance of taking home the gold 💪. Did you see his defensive skills in action last season? 🤴 The team's strategy to balance power and defense with players like Buxton is genius 💡. I'm hyped for this tournament!

Here are some fun stats:

* Top 10 American League MVP candidates: 1. Aaron Judge, 2. Bryce Harper, 3. Paul Goldschmidt, 4. Shohei Ohtani, 5. Ronald Acuña Jr.,... and Buxton at #6!
* Fastest player in MLB 2024 season: Byron Buxton - 30.8 HRs per 700 PA (per Fangraphs)
* Team USA's World Baseball Classic record:
+ Won: 2 times (2017, 2009)
+ Runner-up: 1 time (2023)

Let me know what you think about this news! 🤔

omg can't wait to see Byron Buxton shine for Team USA 🤩! I've been watching him play for the Twins all season and he's just on another level 💥! The fact that they're choosing him over other outfielders shows how much confidence they have in his skills. And let's be real, it's about time we see more power hitters like Buxton on Team USA 🤯! I'm also loving the mix of veteran players and young guns on this roster - it's gonna be a wild ride 🔥! Who else is hyped for the World Baseball Classic? 😄

omg what's up with team usa always relying on mlb players lol they're like the all star squad of baseball wut about some of those young bloods? 🤷‍♂️ i mean don't get me wrong byron buxton is a beast but you'd think they'd be more open to mixing it up with some international talent now that the world is getting smaller 🌎

Yaaas, I'm so stoked to see Byron Buxton reppin' Team USA! 🤩 He's been killing it on the Twins this season and now gets to show off his skills on the biggest stage. 🌟 His speed, defense, and power are a perfect combo for Team USA. man... thinkin bout byron buxton joinin team usa for world baseball classic got me wonderin about what it means to represent ur country on that level 🤔... like, is it just about the game or is it somethin more? is it a symbol of hope or unity for the people watchin? and whats up wit this "strategic move" vibe from team usa? r they tryin to prove somethin or just show they got some talent? 🤷‍♂️ also thinkin bout the pressure, the expectations... how much do u gotta want it to perform in front of a global audience? and what happens when ur "world's on ur shoulders"? 🌎

🚀 Byron Buxton's inclusion on Team USA is a NO-BRAINER! 🤯 He had an insane 2024 season, hitting .264 with 35 HRs and 83 RBIs. His speed, defense, and right-handed bat make him a PERFECT fit for the WBC roster 🌟. With Buxton and Joe Ryan on board, that's like having TWO dynamic outfielders to take on the competition! 💥 Team USA's got this tournament in the bag with their star-studded lineup and solid strategy 📈.

But what really caught my eye is the WBC's overall roster stats... 🤔 Here are some key numbers:

- Averaged 4.5 HRs per game, which is a record high for the WBC 🏆
- Combined team batting average of .274, up from .262 in 2023 📈
- Team ERA of 2.95, down from 3.14 in 2023 🤩

Let's see how these numbers hold up against the toughest competition in March 🌪️!

I'm so hyped that Byron Buxton made it onto Team USA for the World Baseball Classic 🤩! He's been crushing it on the field, and I think he's gonna bring some serious heat to the tournament 🔥. The fact that he's making his WBC debut is awesome - can't wait to see him in action at Daikin Park 💪. The squad's looking pretty stacked too, with Aaron Judge and Bobby Witt Jr. on board... it's gonna be a wild ride 🎢!

I'm hyped about Byron Buxton joining Team USA for the World Baseball Classic 🤩! He's been killing it with the Twins this season, and now he gets to show off his skills on the world stage. It's cool that they're bringing him along to balance out their roster - I mean, who doesn't love a little power and defense? 😎 But at the same time, I'm like, "Let's see how this all plays out" 🤔... we don't want any injuries or slumps ruining the team's chances. Still, with players like Aaron Judge and Bobby Witt Jr., Team USA is looking solid 🙌! The tournament is gonna be lit! 🔥

🤔 So like Byron Buxton is gonna play for Team USA in this World Baseball Classic thingy? That's pretty cool I guess, I mean we don't see many Twins players making it on the big stage like that. Is he really good enough to join all those other star players like Aaron Judge and stuff? 🤷‍♂️

I wonder what Mark DeRosa means by "serious consideration" - is he serious or just trying to make an excuse? And why does Team USA need players who can offer right-handed power and defensive capabilities? Don't they already have some good defenders on the team? 🤔

I'm kinda excited for Byron Buxton, though! He had a great season last year and all. Maybe this is his chance to show off and become famous or something? 🎉 And I wonder how he's gonna do in that World Baseball Classic... will the US actually win it this time around? 🏆

🤩 OMG, I'm so stoked that Byron Buxton is joining Team USA for the World Baseball Classic!!! 🎟️ He's been having an amazing season with the Twins and it's awesome to see him get the recognition he deserves on a global stage. The fact that his speed, defense, and right-handed bat will complement the team's roster is just genius 🤓. I'm loving how the US team is shaping up to be super competitive! 💪 And can you imagine watching Buxton run around center field? 😆 He's definitely one of the top players in the game right now. I'm also hyped about the tournament's format, it's gonna be so exciting to see all these talented players compete against each other 🎉. Bring on March and let the baseball magic begin! 🔥

I'm excited to see Byron Buxton representing Team USA in the World Baseball Classic 🎉💪, this is a great opportunity for him to showcase his skills on a global stage! His speed, defense, and power at the plate are definitely assets that will complement the team's roster. It'll be interesting to see how he performs alongside players like Aaron Judge and Bobby Witt Jr. 🤔

As an athlete with such impressive stats in 2024, I think it's no surprise that Buxton was under serious consideration for the team 🤑. His growth as a player, particularly working with young pitchers, has been impressive to watch. He's now ready to take on the world and show what he can do! 🔥

I'm looking forward to seeing Team USA in action, especially in their exhibition games before the tournament begins 📺. With a mix of veteran players and rookies like Buxton, this team is shaping up to be competitive. Who knows, maybe we'll see them take home that elusive World Baseball Classic title 🏆?

I'm super against Team USA picking Byron Buxton for this World Baseball Classic 🙅‍♂️. I think they're making a big mistake by choosing him. He's had an amazing season, no doubt about it, but he's not exactly the most reliable guy on the field. His .264 batting average is still pretty mediocre and he's been known to have some injury issues in the past. Plus, with all these other talented players like Aaron Judge and Bobby Witt Jr., why did they need to go with Buxton? It feels like a PR move or something 🤔. I just think there are better options out there for them...
