We Bury the Dead review – Daisy Ridley tackles the undead in solid zombie twist

Daisy Ridley Delivers a Haunting Performance in 'We Bury the Dead'

In this understated zombie thriller, Daisy Ridley proves once again that she's more than just a face from her Star Wars days. As Ava, a grieving widow searching for her husband in post-apocalyptic Tasmania, Ridley delivers a heart-wrenching performance that elevates this film above its undead horde.

The story begins with a catastrophic accident involving a US government blunder, killing half a million people in Tasmania. Among the dead is Ava's travelling husband, and she joins a team of volunteers to help with body retrieval, hoping to find his body amidst the chaos. Alongside her is brusque rule-breaker Clay (Brenton Thwaites), who agrees to join her on a perilous journey into uncharted territory.

As they navigate the treacherous landscape, Ridley's Ava remains focused on finding her husband, but she soon discovers that some of the dead are starting to wake up. The undead are more of a curiosity than a threat, and the film's tone is more contemplative than terrifying.

Ridley shines in this emotional drama, conveying the depth of grief and desperation through her facial expressions and body language. Her physicality is as impressive as her acting chops, making Ava a compelling and relatable protagonist.

However, the film's visuals and pacing are not without their flaws. Director Zak Hilditch struggles to find a consistent tone, veering wildly between moments of introspection and more conventional zombie action. The finale is underwhelming, but it's clear that Ridley's performance holds the film together.

Ultimately, 'We Bury the Dead' is a solid addition to the zombie genre, one that prioritizes character development over gory thrills. With Ridley at its helm, this film may not break new ground, but it's a welcome respite from the usual undead fare. If you're looking for a thoughtful and emotionally charged zombie movie, look no further.

The film is now available in cinemas in the US and to rent digitally in the UK, with an Australian release scheduled for February 5th.

idk why ppl are sayin this film is just another zombie flick 🤷‍♀️ it's more like a character study of grief & loss 🌧️ daisy ridley is literally giving me life as ava 👻 her performance is so nuanced & emotional, i feel like i'm right there with her in the post-apocalyptic tasmania 😭 anyway, 1st zombie movie that made me actually care about the undead 😂 the visuals r a bit messy, but that's kinda intentional, right? director zak hilditch is tryin to make a point about how we handle trauma & mortality 🤯 and i think he succeeds, flaws & all 👍

omg u gotta watch this new zombie flick "We Bury the Dead" 🎥 it's got daisy ridley who's literally amazing as a grieving widow searching for her husband in a post-apocalyptic world 🌪️ she conveys so much emotion through facial expressions and body language, makes u feel like u r right there with her 😔

anyway, the film's not perfect, some ppl might say the visuals/pacing are kinda meh, but i think it's a solid addition to the zombie genre 🤝 it focuses more on character development than gory thrills, which is actually pretty refreshing 👍

u gotta check it out if u like thoughtful, emotionally charged movies with a good zombie story 💀

im thinkin, what makes this movie stand out from all the other zombie flicks is daisy ridley's presence 🤔. shes not just actin as a damsel in distress or whatever, shes got depth to her character and conveys emotion thru facial expressions & body language 👀. its like she's tryin to find this husband but also dealin with the fact that hes gone 😔.

the film's tone is all over the place tho 🤯. sometimes its super contemplative, other times its just straight up zombie action 🧟‍♀️. director zak hiditch could've done a better job with pacing & visuals lol 👎 but hey, ridley makes it work 💪.

anyway, if u need somethin more than just gory thrills from ur zombie movie, then this is def worth checkin out 🎥. its like, the main character's grief & desperation are super relatable 🤗. so yeah, go watch it 👍

omg i just saw we bury the dead 🤯 daisy ridley's performance was EVERYTHING 💔 her character's grief and desperation are so palpable, you can feel every beat of her heart 😩 the visuals could've been better tho, but like, who needs gore when you have emotional depth? 🙅‍♀️ brenton thwaites is a great addition to the cast too, and that finale... i won't lie, it kinda fell flat for me 🤔 still, 8/10 from me 👍

Daisy Ridley's performance is giving me all the feels 🤯💔 She's like a modern-day Meryl Streep, but without the Oscar wins (yet) 😉👏 The film's not perfect, but she carries it to life 💪

I gotta say, I'm kinda surprised by how much I enjoyed 'We Bury the Dead'. I mean, it's a zombie movie and all, but it's not like your typical fast-paced, jump-scare fest 🙅‍♂️. Daisy Ridley is awesome as always, she brings this level of depth to her character that makes you wanna invest in her story. And I loved how the film focuses on Ava's emotional journey more than just the undead chaos 😔.

But what really got me was how the film tackles themes of grief and desperation in a way that feels super realistic 🤯. It's not all about gore and action, it's about human emotions and connections. Now, I know some people might say it's not as exciting as other zombie flicks, but honestly, I kinda prefer this more slow-burning approach 💀.

One thing that did bug me was how the pacing can be a bit wonky at times 🕰️, but overall, I think 'We Bury the Dead' is a solid addition to the zombie genre. And with Ridley's standout performance, it's definitely worth checking out 👻.

🤔 I just watched 'We Bury the Dead' and I gotta say, Daisy Ridley totally steals the show! 😍 She brings so much depth and emotion to her character Ava, it's hard not to feel her pain and desperation. The film's tone is really interesting, it's like a mix of psychological thriller and emotional drama, which makes it super relatable. 💔 But, I gotta say, some parts felt a bit slow and the finale was kinda meh. Still, overall it's a solid addition to the zombie genre and Ridley's performance is honestly what holds it together 🙌🎬

omg i'm so obsessed with daisy ridley rn she's like whoa in this movie we bury the dead i mean have you seen her face in the final scene?? it gives me chills every time i watch it i love how she brings so much depth to avas character, she's not just a pretty face like some ppl think from star wars lol plus her physicality is insane i was on the edge of my seat when she's searching for her husband in the woods 🤯 and yeah maybe the pacing and visuals could be better but daisy makes up for it with her performance hands down this film isn't perfect but it's so much better than your average zombie movie 10/10 would watch again 👻

📊 I'm kinda surprised by how well Daisy Ridley's performance holds up her "Star Wars" rep. 🤔 According to IMDB, her Rotten Tomatoes score is at 72%, which is pretty standard for a horror flick. 😎 However, did you know that the film's production budget was only $2 million? 💸 That's a tiny fraction of what some big-budget zombie movies throw around! 💰 On a more interesting note, here's a chart 📈 showing the average global box office gross for each month in 2024: * Jan: $3.5B * Feb: $3.8B * Mar: $3.2B * Apr: $3.9B * May: $4.1B * Jun: $3.6B * Jul: $4.0B * Aug: $3.9B * Sep: $3.7B * Oct: $4.2B * Nov: $3.5B * Dec: $3.8B

🎥💀 Daisy Ridley is EVERYTHING in this film! Her character Ava's emotional journey has me feeling all the feels 🤯. The way she conveys grief and desperation on screen is 💔🌊. I love how the film focuses on character development over jump scares 👻. It's not perfect, but her performance makes it a solid watch 👍. Worth checking out if you're a fan of emotional drama or just want to see Daisy Ridley shine 💫!

I think people are being too harsh on this one 🤷‍♀️. I mean, Daisy Ridley gives a solid performance here, no question about it 💪. The film's not perfect, but who is? It's like people want everything to be flawless and on point, you know? 🙄 And yeah, the visuals could've been done better, but that's just part of the process right? Zak Hilditch is trying his best here 🤝.

I love how Ava's character development shines through in Ridley's acting. She brings so much depth to the role, it's heartbreaking 💔. And let's be real, the zombie genre can get stale sometimes 😴. It's great that 'We Bury the Dead' tries something different and focuses on character instead of just gore 💀.

Overall, I think this film is a hidden gem 🌟. It may not break any new ground, but it's a thoughtful and emotionally charged take on the zombie genre. And if you're looking for something that'll make you feel all the feels, then this is the one 🎥.

I gotta say, I'm loving Daisy Ridley's performance in 'We Bury the Dead' 🎥 It's like she's taking on all the pain and grief from the audience, you know? But what really got me thinking is how this film could be seen as a commentary on our current societal issues. I mean, think about it - a catastrophic accident caused by government blundering? That sounds way too familiar to me 🤔 And what's with all these volunteers stepping up to help in the aftermath? It feels like we're seeing a lot of parallels between this movie and some of the volunteer work being done in disaster relief efforts around the world. But what really caught my attention is how Ridley's character, Ava, navigates this treacherous landscape without any clear leadership or authority figures. That's like looking at our current state of politics - all these different voices trying to lead, but nobody seems to be taking charge 🤷‍♀️ And let's not forget that finale... underwhelming, right? Maybe we're just not used to seeing zombie movies with such a thoughtful and emotionally charged approach. Either way, I'm loving it! 👍

I'm kinda mixed about this new Daisy Ridley flick 🤔. On one hand, I loved her performance as Ava - she's got some serious acting chops 💪. The whole post-apocalyptic vibe and the zombie aspect are super intriguing too 😱. But at the same time, I felt like the film didn't quite live up to its full potential 🤷‍♀️. I mean, the visuals were a bit all over the place and the pacing was kinda meh ⏱️. The finale was pretty underwhelming too 🤔. Still, if you're a fan of character-driven dramas with a zombie twist, you might wanna check this one out 😊.

🤖 I just watched We Bury the Dead and I gotta say, Daisy Ridley's performance is OUT OF THIS WORLD 🚀! She totally owns that role as Ava, conveying all this emotional depth without even saying a word 🤐. The movie itself isn't perfect, but her acting makes it a must-watch for me 👍. Plus, it's always cool to see someone take on a character beyond their usual typecast 💁‍♀️. I'd def recommend it to anyone looking for something more than just your run-of-the-mill zombie flick 🎥 [https://www.cultofmac.com/2025/01/d...025/01/daisy-ridley-we-bury-the-dead-review/)

🎥 I'm loving Daisy Ridley's new role as Ava, she's got such depth and emotion to her performance 🤯 it's not just about action and gore, but really about the character's journey through grief and loss 💔 I was a bit worried when I first saw that the zombies were more of a curiosity than a threat, but she sells it so well 🙌 also, Brenton Thwaites is great as Clay, their chemistry on screen is amazing 👫 can't wait to see what she does next in her career 💖

I'm loving Daisy Ridley's range as an actress 🤩! She totally owns that role of Ava, conveying so much emotion through her face and body language 👀. I mean, who wouldn't want to watch a zombie movie where the focus is on human connection and grief? It's like 'The Book of Eli' meets 'World War Z', but with more emotional depth 💔. The film's understated approach is actually really refreshing in today's over-the-top horror landscape 🎃. But, I gotta say, I'm a bit disappointed by the pacing issues and inconsistent tone... still, I'd def give it 4/5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐️. What do you guys think? Have you seen it yet? 😊

👻 I mean, come on, folks... Daisy Ridley's performance is genuinely unsettling. The way she conveys grief and desperation is raw and unflinching... it's a masterclass. But, honestly, who thought it was a good idea to make the zombies more of a curiosity than a threat? 🤔 The film's tone is all over the place and, tbh, it could've benefited from a stronger narrative thread. Still, Ridley shines, even if the rest doesn't quite live up to her level. 👏
