Minneapolis, MN - A US immigration and customs enforcement officer shot and killed a 37-year-old woman on Wednesday morning during an operation in the city. The shooting has sparked outrage and controversy as federal officials describe it as self-defense, but local leaders dispute that account.
The victim, identified as Renee Good, was a US citizen who was stopped by ICE agents while observing federal actions in the city. According to federal sources, Good "weaponized her vehicle" and attempted to run over law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them. However, eyewitnesses and local officials say that's not what happened.
Videos from the scene show ICE agents approaching a woman who was blocking the street with her car, trying to persuade her to move. Whistles were blown to alert neighbors of ICE's presence before the agent drew his weapon and fired multiple shots. The vehicle drove off a short distance before crashing into another car further down the street.
"I want to tell everybody directly: that is bulls***," Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said, disputing the federal account of self-defense. "This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying."
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz echoed Frey's concerns, saying the state doesn't need any further help from the federal government and calling on President Trump and Secretary Kristi Noem to stop deploying federal agents to the area.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota saying "ICE must stop terrorizing our communities" and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison condemning the deployment as causing serious harm and spreading terror through the community.
An investigation is underway by the FBI and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, but many are calling for greater transparency and accountability from the federal government.
