Winmau World Masters darts: Michael van Gerwen makes shock exit as Gian van Veen, Gerwyn Price make winning starts

Michael van Gerwen's five-year winning streak at the Winmau World Masters came to an abrupt end as he suffered a 3-1 defeat to Australia's Damon Heta in the opening round of the tournament. The Dutchman, who has won this event a record five times, averaged only 88.36 and struggled with his finishing against the Australian, who took the third set with a 124 finish but ultimately lost the second despite Van Gerwen wasting seven darts at double.

Van Gerwen's departure was a surprise to many, considering his reputation as one of the sport's top players. However, he was beaten by Heta in a tight encounter that saw the Australian claim victory after taking the third set with a 118 finish and then wrapping up the win with a 101 checkout.

Gian van Veen, on the other hand, made a successful start to his campaign, coming from behind to beat Ryan Joyce 3-1. The Dutchman, who had not qualified for last year's event, told ITV that he enjoyed the match but did make it "a little bit difficult for myself" after falling behind in the first set.

Nathan Aspinall also made a strong start to his campaign, averaging over 105 in a 3-1 win over Shane McGuirk. The Englishman took seven out of eleven attempts at double to seal the victory and will now face Van Veen in the next round.

Gerwyn Price delivered the performance of the night, averaging 108.5 in a straight-set demolition of James Hurrell. The Welshman won six of eight legs available, including four maximums, and is set to face Jonny Clayton in the next round.

James Wade also secured a crucial win over Madars Razma in a final-set decider, while Gary Anderson beat Niels Zonneveld by 101 averages to set up a second-round meeting with his veteran rival.

The final eight spots will be confirmed on Friday as defending champion Luke Humphries and back-to-back world Luke Littler take on Dave Chisnall and Mike de Decker respectively.

Omg what's going on in the PDC right now?! Van Gerwen just got schooled by Damon Heta lol 88.36 avg is not even close to his usual self 🀣 anyway, I'm loving Gian van Veen's comeback story! That guy's determination is inspiring. And Gerwyn Price just destroyed James Hurrell! I mean what can you do when a player's on πŸ”₯? Aspinall and Wade also had solid starts, and it's gonna be an exciting tournament. Can't wait to see the rest of the brackets unfold πŸ€”

man i'm lovin the winmau world masters so far 🀩 the darts is lookin fierce this year! michael van gerwen's loss to damon heta was a total shocker 🀯 i mean, he's been on fire for years but somehow he got taken down by the aussie. but hey, gotta respect heta's game he played some solid darts there πŸ’ͺ meanwhile gian van veen and nathan aspinall are lookin strong they're gonna make a deep run in this tournament for sure 🀞 and gerwyn price just destroyed james hurrell lol what a performance 🎯 can't wait to see the rest of the competition unfold πŸ‘€

.. can't believe what's happening in darts 🀯! Van Gerwen, the five-time winner of Winmau World Masters, gets knocked out by Damon Heta in round one? 😱 That's like Messi losing to a nobody in the Champions League ⚽️. I mean, we all know he's still an amazing player and all, but it's not the same as winning the whole thing five years in a row, ya know? πŸ€”

And Gian van Veen, who didn't even qualify last year, is doing alright for himself 😎. Not bad at all! But Nathan Aspinall, man... that guy averaged 105 and took down Shane McGuirk like it was nothing πŸ€Έβ€β™‚οΈ. And then Gerwyn Price comes along and smashes James Hurrell 3-0? That's just not right πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ.

I'm loving the competitiveness in this tournament, though πŸ˜ƒ. Bring on the next round!

I'm surprised that Michael van Gerwen lost so early, you'd think he'd be able to handle a loss like that without it being such a major shock πŸ€”. He's still one of the best in the sport, but I guess even the pros have an off day sometimes πŸ’₯. On a more positive note, Gian van Veen's come from behind win is super inspiring - he's definitely got some fire πŸ”₯! And Gerwyn Price's performance was incredible πŸ™Œ, averaging 108.5 and taking out James Hurrell with ease 🎯. Can't wait to see what the rest of the tournament brings! πŸ‘€

aww man, van gerwen's losing streak is really sad πŸ˜”... he's always been so consistent and dominant in the sport, but i guess even the best can have an off day πŸ€•... Damon heta played an amazing game, though! he's definitely one to watch out for in this tournament πŸ‘€... meanwhile, gian van veen and nathan aspinall are making a strong start, and gerwyn price just smashed it πŸ˜…... these are gonna be some epic matches to watch! πŸ’₯

thought michael van gerwen's loss was a bit of a wake-up call for him... been at the top for so long, it can be easy to get complacent πŸ€”. but you gotta respect damon heta's performance - he really stepped up and took advantage of mvg's mistakes πŸ’ͺ. on a positive note, gian van veen's comeback is something we love seeing in tournaments! underdog stories always make for great entertainment 😊. hope nathan aspinall can keep up the momentum against van veen 🀞. anyways, can't wait to see how the rest of the tournament unfolds πŸŽ‰.

omg I was so surprised by Van Gerwen's loss lol he's like a legend in darts 🀯 what happened to him? his form just fell apart 😴 anyway, I'm loving the start of the tournament so far! Heta vs Van Gerwen was a close match and I think Damon came out on top well played by him πŸ‘ Gian van Veen did alright too, beating Joyce in a nail-biter 🀝 Aspinall's average was insane tho, must be all that practice paying off πŸ’ͺ Price is looking like the man, dominating James Hurrell πŸ™Œ and Wade got a win over Razma, cool to see those underdog stories coming true 😎

I'm kinda surprised how quickly Van Gerwen fell off the table πŸ€”. I mean, he's a legend of darts, right? But that Aussie kid Heta is on fire πŸ”₯! He played some smart darting and took advantage of MVG's slightly off day. On the other hand, Gian van Veen's comeback win was awesome to watch πŸ‘ - shows he still got it! πŸ™Œ Nathan Aspinall and Gerwyn Price are looking strong too, with a total domination of their opponent πŸ’ͺ. Can't wait for Friday's final eight spots to be confirmed... it's gonna be interesting who makes the cut 😐

I'm shocked that Michael van Gerwen lost so badly to Damon Heta 🀯. I mean, he's a five-time winner of the Winmau World Masters and all, but his game just wasn't there today. 88.36 average is pretty low, especially for someone with his experience. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how Gian van Veen and Nathan Aspinall do in the next rounds - they both seem like strong contenders 🀞

oh man i was like totally expecting michael van gerwen to crush the competition πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ but Damon heta's comeback was insane πŸ’₯ that third set was so close i love how gian van veen managed to turn it around though πŸ™Œ and nathan aspinall's average is crazy πŸ”₯ 105 is no joke! πŸ˜… gerwyn price just destroyed james hurrell btw what a performance 🀩 can't wait for the next round πŸ‘€

lol Damon Heta's win over Van Gerwen was insane 🀯! I know Van Gerwen is a legend and all, but Heta totally deserved that W 😎. The way he took the third set with that 118 finish was mental πŸ”₯! Aspinall and Price are also on fire this year πŸ”₯πŸ’¨, can't wait to see how they do in the next rounds 🀞🏻! And Gary Anderson's win over Niels was a nice one too πŸ‘, love seeing those old-school darts battles 😎

I'm not surprised that Michael van Gerwen's winning streak ended πŸ€”. He's been playing for a while now, and it's only a matter of time before he runs into someone who can give him a tough match πŸ’ͺ. Damon Heta was solid from what I saw, and Van Gerwen's average wasn't as high as we're used to seeing from him πŸ“Š.

On the other hand, Gian van Veen is looking like a dark horse in this tournament πŸŒ‘. Coming back from behind takes a lot of guts, and he showed that he can handle pressure πŸ”₯. Nathan Aspinall's win over Shane McGuirk was also impressive πŸ‘. Gerwyn Price's performance was insane 😲 - 108.5 average is just crazy! πŸ’₯

I'm excited to see how the tournament unfolds πŸ€—. It's gonna be a tough road for some of these players, but it's gonna be entertaining to watch πŸ‘€.

omg what happened 2 michael van gerwen?? he's been unbeatable 4 years & u think hes just gonna lose to some aussie? 🀯 i was watching the match & it seemed like he wasnt himself at all, threw away 7 darts at double & didnt even come close 2 finish a single bull πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

anywayz 2 da good news gian van veen made a comeback 1st round win is always a confidence booster nathan aspinall also looked solid in his match 😎 gerwyn price destroyed james hurrell like a boss, wonder wut gonna happen if he gets past jonny clayton

man I'm still hyped about this tournament πŸŽ‰! okay so Michael van Gerwen's winning streak is over but like, that's not the end of the world, right? he's still one of the best players out there and it was a tough draw for him against Damon Heta. i mean, 88.36 average ain't terrible lol. and on the other hand, gian van Veen making a comeback from nowhere is like the ultimate motivator 🀩! i'm so stoked to see him play. and that Nathan Aspinall win was insane, averaging over 105?! πŸ”₯ he's got this tournament in the bag! gerwyn price just destroyed James Hurrell and i love how confident he's being about his game πŸ‘Š meanwhile james wade vs madars razma was a thriller 🀯 can't wait for friday to see who makes it to the final eight!

omg, what can you say? 🀯 michel van gerwen's streak is over, but i'm actually kinda hyped for the rest of the tournament! πŸŽ‰ damon heta showed us all what he's capable of, and gian van veen and nathan aspinall made some awesome starts πŸ™Œ plus, gerwyn price just destroyed james hurrell 🀯 it's gonna be a wild ride.

man, this is crazy! 🀯 van gerwen's win streak just got shattered like that. u gotta feel for the guy, he's been on top of his game for so long but sometimes these things don't go your way. 88.36 avg? that's not even close to what we're used to seeing from him. and those finishing issues? ouch. anyway, it's all good for the rest of us fans, more spots in the competition means more chances for other players to shine. 🀞 nathan aspinall looked fire tho, averaging over 105 is insane! and gerwyn price just crushed james hurrell, that guy's on a whole different level now 😎

It's crazy how quickly the game can change, you know? One minute you're on top of the world, like Van Gerwen was with that five-year winning streak at the Winmau World Masters... and the next, you're getting darts up your nose from a bloke like Damon Heta. I mean, 88.36 avg is not even close to what we've seen in this tournament so far - 108.5 is where it's at! Gian van Veen looked solid though, and I love that he wasn't intimidated by playing someone who didn't qualify last year. He's definitely got the mental toughness now. Can't wait to see how Aspinall and Price take on their next opponents 🀩

dude, van gerwen's downfall is like, totally expected tbh πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ he was always gonna have a bad day at the office. I mean, 88.36 avg? that's not even close to what we're used to seeing from him. and that finishing game against heta was so shaky... seven darts wasted on double? yeah right πŸ˜’

and on the bright side, gian van veen came through with a win 🀩 but let's be real, he had nothing to lose by not qualifying last year so he's already got some momentum going for him. nathan aspinall is looking strong though, that 105+ avg was crazy πŸ’₯ and gerwyn price just destroyed james hurrell like it was no one's business πŸ”₯

the pba season always starts with a lot of surprises and it seems like this year is no exception. michael van gerwen's loss to damon heta was definitely unexpected, but it just goes to show that everyone has an off day sometimes. gian van veen, nathan aspinall, gerwyn price, james wade, and gary anderson all made a strong start to their campaigns which is great for fans of the sport. will be interesting to see how things play out from here.
