Winter Olympics 2026 opening ceremony review – disco-dancing opera masters upstage Mariah Carey

The Winter Olympics' grand opening ceremony played it safe with a musical medley that leaned more towards classical names than pop stars. Andrea Bocelli and Lang Lang were just two of the familiar faces who took the stage alongside opera masters Fredrick Fellinia, Giorgio Armani-clad performers, and even an effigy of Puccini and Rossini dancing to a rendition of Righeira's '80s Italo disco hit Vamos a la playa.

However, Mariah Carey was undoubtedly the main event – albeit one that was over all too soon. Despite her elaborate costume, she kept things relatively subdued before unleashing an astonishing whistle note, a signal for the transition into her new single Nothing Is Impossible. The American team's entry, however, received a decidedly mixed reaction from the crowd.

A dance history of Olympic Games marked another pivotal moment in the ceremony, soundtracking its soundtrack to Adriano Celentano's 1973 hit Prisencolinensinainciusol – later revealed as the star attraction of an easyJet TV advert. The rest of the show was a love letter to opera: Andrea Bocelli sang Nessun Dorma alongside Lang Lang accompanying Cecilia Bartoli.

A brief appearance by Italian rapper Ghali left this writer yearning for more, and it's intriguing to consider what might be in store for the Los Angeles 2028 opening ceremony. The current state of affairs with Donald Trump still in power only serves as a reminder that the coming years will likely feature more Kid Rock-esque performances than anything else – an ominous sign for music fans and those who care about fostering goodwill towards Team America.

Ugh 🙄 I don't get it why they needed to play some old opera songs all night? Can't they just mix in some modern stuff so everyone can enjoy it? 😐 Andrea Bocelli and Lang Lang are awesome, but come on, 2 hours of classical music is too much. And what's with the Mariah Carey performance being over after like 30 seconds? That whistle note was cool I guess 🎤 But for me, the highlight was when that Italian rapper Ghali came out and I was like "Hey, this guy's not so bad" 🤷‍♂️ Now I'm curious to see what they do next in LA... maybe they can get some more diverse acts? 💖

omg i was at the olympics opening ceremony 🎉👀 and i have to say mariah carey's whistle note still gives me goosebumps lol 😍 my friend's bf was sitting next to me and he was a huge fan but even he was kinda underwhelmed by american team's performance 🤔 i think it would've been way cooler if they got someone like drake or beyonce on the stage instead of kid rock... and omg can we talk about ghali's outfit though 👗💃 i needed more of that in my life, btw has anyone seen his new album? 🎵

omg what's up with the Mariah Carey performance tho 🤯 she was so hyped up but it felt like she just phoned it in after that whistle note 📣 i mean i get it the crowd was mixed but come on a WHISTLE NOTE is not enough to save an entire opening ceremony 😂 and btw who thought it was a good idea to have a random Italian rapper show up out of nowhere 👀 gotta give props to Ghali tho, he brought some much needed energy 🎉

Ugh I'm so done with the Olympics' grand opening ceremony 😒 it was all so safe and boring. Where's the edge? Where's the representation of modern artists and genres? I mean, Mariah Carey is iconic but only showing up for like 2 seconds was a waste 🤷‍♀️ and what's with the lack of diversity in terms of music styles? Opera and classical stuff are cool and all but it feels like they're trying to force it on us. The one bright spot was that Italian rapper Ghali made an appearance, maybe we can count on him to bring some real heat to the LA 2028 opening ceremony 🤞

🎵😐 I gotta say, the Winter Olympics opening ceremony was pretty meh. I mean, it was all about opera and classical vibes, which is cool and all, but where's the excitement? 🤔 The main event with Mariah Carey was lit, though! That whistle note tho 💥 And can we talk about how some of those performances just felt like they were phoned in? Like, Andrea Bocelli and Lang Lang are legends, but even they couldn't elevate that music. 🎶 The dance history bit was pretty cool, though - who knew Prisencolinensinainciusol was a thing? 😂

Ugh, I'm so over the Winter Olympics' grand opening ceremony! 🤔 The musical medley was super boring and it felt like they were trying to appeal to the old folks in the audience. Where's the fun? 😴 They could've used some more modern artists or even better, a collaboration with some of today's pop stars.

And Mariah Carey's performance was literally over too soon! 🎤 I mean, I love her as much as the next person, but come on, give us a bit more of that whistle note action. And what's up with the American team's entry? 😐 It felt like they were trying to be cool or something and it just didn't work.

I also loved the opera part of the show though! 🎶 Andrea Bocelli is a legend and Lang Lang is so talented. But Ghali's brief appearance was kinda weird... I feel like he could've brought more energy to that performance. 💃

I'm super hyped for the LA 2028 opening ceremony though, especially with the potential new sounds they'll bring! 🎉 Fingers crossed they won't go down the Kid Rock route... 😝

The Winter Olympics' grand opening ceremony was like a reflection of our times – all glitz and glamour, but beneath the surface, there's a sense of comfort zone. I mean, where's the risk-taking? The bold statement? Andrea Bocelli and Lang Lang are great, don't get me wrong, but it feels like we're playing it too safe. It's like the musical medley was saying, "We know what people want to hear, so here it is." 🤔

And then there was Mariah Carey – what a contrast! Her whistle note was like a jolt of electricity, but it was over all too soon. I feel like we're missing out on something special when we don't take more risks in our entertainment. It's like we're stuck in a loop, playing the same old tunes.

I'm intrigued by that brief appearance by Ghali, though – there's something about him that speaks to me. Maybe it's his ability to blend different styles and create something new? That's what I want to see more of – not just for the Olympics, but for our world in general. 🎵

I'm not sure why they had to go so safe with the musical medley 🤔, you know? I mean, what's wrong with throwing in some Ed Sheeran or Taylor Swift to get the crowd going? It feels like they're trying to play it too nice for their international audience. And Mariah Carey's performance was pretty cool, but why did she have to do that whistle thingy all over again? Can't she just let her talent speak for itself? 🙄

But what really got me thinking is how this whole thing relates to the state of our current music scene 🎵. I mean, we're living in a time where Donald Trump is still in power and Kid Rock is basically the unofficial anthem of Team America 😒. It's like they want us to be all about the patriotic vibes and forget about the rest of the world. And that's not exactly what our Olympics are supposed to be about 🏅.

I'm all for showcasing American talent, but can't we mix it up a bit more? Can't we have some international flair too? I think if they'd taken a bit more of a risk with their musical choices, the whole ceremony would've been way more memorable 🔥.

🤔 I feel like the Winter Olympics' grand opening ceremony played it too safe, you know? I mean, Andrea Bocelli and Lang Lang are amazing, but a musical medley that's all about classical names is just so... predictable. 🎵 Where's the excitement in that? And don't even get me started on Mariah Carey - she brought the house down with her whistle note, but her costume was kinda... basic 😐.

I do love how they incorporated dance history into the ceremony, though! Adriano Celentano's song is such a classic 🎶. And I'm curious to see what the Los Angeles 2028 opening ceremony has in store - hopefully it'll be more experimental and less... Kid Rock-esque 🤷‍♀️.

It's also kinda weird that there was a whole segment dedicated to opera, considering how little representation that is in mainstream culture these days. Don't get me wrong, I love opera, but it feels like they're trying too hard to appease the old-school crowd 🎭. Anyways, overall, I'd say the ceremony had some great moments, but could've used a bit more... zing 💥!

Wow! Mariah Carey's whistle note was insane 💥, I'm so down to hear "Nothing Is Impossible" ASAP 🎵. And Italian rapper Ghali's surprise appearance was fire 🔥, it would've been cool to see more hip-hop in the ceremony. The opera segment with Andrea Belli and Lang Lang was also super classy 👏, but maybe next time they can get some edgier performers on stage 😴.

🤔 the olympics are all about bringing people together, but honestly, mariah's performance felt like just another pop concert 🎤. where was the excitement? 🤷‍♂️ the crowd seemed lukewarm, and the whole thing just felt like a safe choice. i mean, andrea bocelli is amazing, don't get me wrong, but it feels like we're stuck in a musical time warp 🕰️. and what's with the kid rock vibe? didn't we think the olympics were about more than just partying? 🎉 i'm all for a good dose of italian flair, but can't we mix things up a bit more? 🌎

The Winter Olympics opening ceremony was pretty meh, if you ask me 🤔. I mean, it's not like they didn't try to bring some excitement with Mariah Carey's whistle note and Andrea Bocelli's Nessun Dorma, but overall it felt super safe and unoriginal. Where's the creativity? I love a good classical music performance as much as the next person, but let's be real, opera is not exactly what you'd call "cool" 😴.

And can we talk about how weird the dance history segment was? Adriano Celentano's song in an Olympic Games ceremony? It just felt like something they threw together at the last minute because they didn't know what else to do 🤷‍♀️. And Ghali's appearance, while cool, was literally the only thing that brought some edge to the whole thing.

I'm not exactly thrilled about the direction music is heading right now, especially with Trump still in power... it's just gonna be more of the same old stuff for a while 🎤. Can't we get some fresh talent and new sounds? I guess we'll just have to wait and see what the LA 2028 ceremony has in store 🤞.

OMG, I'm so confused by the Olympics opening ceremony 🤔! I mean, I love Andrea Bocelli and Lang Lang as much as the next person, but Mariah Carey just sorta... showed up 😂. And don't even get me started on that whistle note - was it really necessary? 🙄 The crowd was so divided about her performance - some people were loving it, while others looked like they'd rather be at a dentist appointment 🤣.

But for real though, I loved the dance history segment 🕺! Who knew Adriano Celentano's song had become an advert for easyJet? 😂 And Ghali's quick cameo was so cool - more of that please! 👏 It would've been awesome to see him do a full performance. Can't wait to see what they have in store for the LA 2028 opening ceremony 🎉!

Ugh, I'm all about showcasing American talent at these events 🤷‍♂️... but Mariah Carey's performance was super underwhelming considering her level of fame 🎤. I mean, where was the fire? The energy? It felt like she just phoned it in, which is not exactly what we want from a pop icon 🙄. And can we talk about how they barely showcased any modern American artists besides her? It's 2025, bro! We're living in a new era of music.

I gotta say, I'm so done with the lackluster musical medley at the Winter Olympics opening ceremony 🎵😴. I mean, I get it, they wanted to keep things classic and all that, but come on! Andrea Bocelli and Lang Lang are legends, sure, but where's the excitement? And what's up with Mariah Carey's super short appearance? She came in hot 🔥, but left way too soon. I was low-key hyped when she started singing "Nothing Is Impossible" though 🎤.

And can we talk about the crowd reaction to the American team's entry? Like, it was a total mixed bag 🤔. I'm all for diversity and trying new things, but not if it means disappointing half the audience 😐.

I did love that dance history segment tho 💃🕺. It was so cool seeing all those iconic moments from past Olympics stitched together. And Adriano Celentano's "Prisencolinensinainciusol" is a total banger 🎵.

Ghali's brief appearance was a nice surprise, though 👍. I'm hoping he brings some fire to the LA 2028 opening ceremony 💥. Fingers crossed they'll go for something more experimental and edgy than...you know, Kid Rock 😒.

omg u guys i'm literally dying from how boring the olympics opening ceremony was 🤯 i mean i get it classical music is iconic but come on a medley of opera singers singing old songs that everyone already knows? 😴 and don't even get me started on mariah carey's "performance" - she looked like she just rolled out of bed and put on the first thing she found on the floor lol 🤣 i'm still trying to figure out why they wasted ghali's time tho - he's a total gem 🎵 and can't wait for 2028 but ugh don't even get me started on what might happen with kid rock... 😨🤯

OMG, I'm literally SHOOK by Mariah's whistle note!!! 🤯🎶 That girl can still give it up like nobody's business! 😂 But seriously, what was up with the crowd reaction to her performance? Like, were they not vibing with Team America? 😕 The show was super classy and all, but I gotta say, Ghali's cameo would've been lit if he got more time on that stage 🎵💥 Can't wait for LA 2028, hopefully it'll be a step in the right direction – no Kid Rock, please! 😂

man i'm so done with the Olympics' opening ceremony 🙄... they went for safe mode and it was like watching a 4hr long music video montage 😴. where's the edginess? mariah carey was lit tho 🔥, that whistle note tho! 👀 but american team's entry was like, what are we even doing over here? 🤔 ghali's brief appearance made me wanna bang my head 🎸. anyways, i'm hyped for LA 2028 and hopefully they'll bring the noise 📣

"Be careful what you wish for, because it's not always easy to get." 🤔 The Winter Olympics' grand opening ceremony was a bit of a mixed bag, with some amazing performances like Andrea Bocelli and Lang Lang, but also some questionable choices that didn't quite resonate with the crowd. It's hard to say whether the decision to play more classical music and avoid pop stars was a good one or not, as everyone has their own taste in music after all 😐
