Researchers at the Pasteur Institute in Paris have pointed out that high mortality rates among livestock, known as “pig Ebola,” were reported before previous human outbreaks in the region. This phenomenon suggests a disturbing possibility: that the Bundibugyo variant of the virus was circulating undetected for weeks or even months before it was officially declared.
Genome sequencing analyses by the World Health Organization (WHO) support this theory, indicating that the outbreak likely began as early as February 2026. The WHO’s Regional Director for Africa, Mohamed Janabi, highlighted a significant gap in case reporting, with only one-third of patients accessible to aid workers over three months.
The first known case was identified retrospectively: a health worker from Mongbwalu in northeastern Ituri Province who developed symptoms around April 24 or 25. However, it wasn’t until May 5 that the WHO issued its first warning, and ten days later, on May 15, the Congolese government announced the Ebola outbreak.
Several early infections were mistakenly attributed to more common diseases such as malaria and typhus. As a result, there was a low index of clinical suspicion among local healthcare providers, facilitating wider geographic spread before containment efforts began. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) concluded that this delay highlights “a lack of preparedness and inadequate coordination between response teams.”
The story raises uncomfortable questions about Congo’s handling of the epidemic. Have lessons from previous outbreaks been learned?
